  3. Hello! I'm back digging through my collection again. This week I've dusted off my old iD Anthology box set.<3 There are a couple of options to play Doom with LaunchBox with the iD Anthology discs; a. Original version via DosBox b. Official Doom95 windows version c. An unofficial source port such as DoomsDay, zDoom or Boom etc. I've decided on option 'c' as this lets me 'tinker' with mods, and in this example I'm using zDoom. - First I've created a zDoom folder in LanchBox's games directory and placed the relevant files in there. - In the zDoom folder I've created a 'WAD' directory which is where I'm keeping the original WAD game files required. - After launching zDoom once it should create an .ini file which we need to edit. - We've added the 'Path=../wad/' to the 'IWADSearch.Directories' and 'FileSearch.Directories' - Once done, in Launchbox we can create and edit our game: - The Application Path is pointing to zDoom and the Command-Line Parameters are telling zDoom which 'iWAD' to use. - The pk3 file also being referenced is a high-res texture pack for the game. So for additional mods we can just add more to the -file string. -This setup will, of course, work for other WAD-based games Hope that helps!
  4. SentaiBrad said Thank you for sharing this! I might even have to try this out. I've just recorded the difference between SoundBlaster (1st segment) and Gravis Ultrasound (2nd) using the 411 patches from within Terra Nova's (game used in the instructions above) audio config and sound test. The difference is striking, but of course the beauty of using GUS patches is that if you don't like, for example, the sound of one of the guitar patches you can just find a different one and change it. And Warcraft 2. Soundblaster 16 first then GUS.
  5. If you've ever played Doom with a Gravis Ultrasound rather than the stock synthy plinky-plonky tones screeched out from a Soundblaster you know how privileged you were back in the day. For those unfamilliar, here's a little copy/pasta from wiki: "The Gravis UltraSound was notable at the time of its 1992 launch by providing the IBM PC platform with sample-based music synthesis technology (marketed as "wavetable"), that is the ability to use real-world sound recordings rather than artificial computer-generated waveforms as the basis of a musical instrument. Samples of pianos or trumpets, for example, sound more like their real respective instruments. With up to 32 hardware audio channels, the GUS was notable[citation needed] for MIDI playback quality with a large set of instrument patches that could be stored in its own RAM." @SentaiBrad and I have come up with a simple solution that doesn't require you to have a set of patches installed in each and every DOS game you've installed. Here's how to get these awesome sounds working with your (compatible) MS-DOS games: * You first need your GUS patches (the internet is your friend to find these). They'll generally come in two flavours; ULTRASND411 and ULTRASNDPPL161 depending on which type of sound you prefer. * Take which ever one you want (I'm using ULTRASND411) and rename it to simply 'ULTRASND'. * I've placed this ULTRASND folder in my LaunchBox\DOSBox\GUS\ directory. * Not every game supports GUS, but for those that do edit the game in LaunchBox and create a new Mount pointing at the DOSBox\GUS directory where we've placed the ULTRASND directory. * In this example I've set the GUS directory to E:\ * Either within the main 'Edit DOSBox Configuration', or in a separate custom .conf config for the specific game, Enable Gravis Ultrasound and set the path to what would be the mounted drive containing the ULTRASND patches. In this case it's e:\ULTRASND. * You can now head into your game's audio config/setup and choose Gravis Ultrasound as your Midi player. Hope that helps!
  6. SentaiBrad said As long as they don't get scratched they'll be around a lot longer than Carts or Floppies. :P It's good you're making images of them though. I'm not overly cautious with discs I'm afraid. ;)
  7. I've been trawling through my old DOS game CDs I haven't touched in decades. Now I'm actually really grateful that LaunchBox can create an image of my discs as I install them after popping these old, sometimes battered, discs into my rarely used BlueRay burner and seeing it struggle to read some of them. It's sad to think that discs won't be around or usable forever. But at least I now have a kinda backup of the discs. <3
  8. gizmo said hi many thanks for your replys , oh dear i have to reset the pc ? There's a nice easy to follow article, information and guide here: windowscentral.com - how upgrade 32-bit 64-bit version windows-10 - Note:: the link is a 3rd party site and has nothing to do with LaunchBox, its users or development team, who cannot be responsible for anything going pear-shaped. Backups, backups and more backups aways.
  9. hgarcia said Hi try couple things and can't get my bigbox back.. there,s anyone in the forum than can help me out remotely? I'm newbie Thanks I also had the trouble with BigBox dissapearing... but, you may find your .tmp files also going missing. It's pretty much confirmed it is AntiVirus false positives. Why is your antivirus doing this? I'm no computer surgeon scientist type person but I'd imagine it's because your anti-virus is 'protecting' you from executables from manipulating things on your 'puter that, in its view, haven't been installed. (LB is flatfile/portable, after all so it's not deeply embedded in registry so may not been seen as "trusted") So it may be thinking "Oh, this virus in my definition database makes tmp files and has some code with a keyword "bigbox" or whatever in it, so it could be that!" and so it takes appropriate action. This is me purely speculating of course, as I said, I don't know my ASCII from my ARSE. As mentioned in a previous post here, it is NOT recommended you lower the protection level of your Antivirus or disable it just on Launch-Box's behalf. What you CAN do is add an exception: In BitDefender, for example, this is accomplished with the following: (for other antivirus software I'm sure you'll find a similar option) - Click 'Modules' then the cog icon next to the word 'Antivirus'. - Go to the Exclusions tab and click 'Exluded files and folders'. - From here you can add your LaunchBox install location. Notes: ** To get BigBox back, you can simply run the LaunchBox installer and install over the existing install. ** You may find you won't be able to re-install LaunchBox untill the exception/exclusion is made. ** You will NOT lose your games setup or licence, but you may need to re-set your colour theme. ** I run LaunchBox on my cloud service (OneDrive in this case), this means I need to add the exception on my laptop's antivirus, also. Hope that helps!
  10. Oh my gosh! Can we just take a moment to appreciate that this R-TYPE animation is a thing and exists? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=876W253z6KY <3
  11. Gotta ask the obvious: Have you checked your spam folder and doubled checked the spelling of your email address when entering it? The email may be not always be the same one you used to purchase your licence / joined this forum with.
  12. SentaiBrad said Yea forever means forever. Just to note, I'm holding Jason contractually obliged to maintain LaunchBox for EVER. ;)
  13. fromlostdays said I have this program called Tapatalk on my phone, but I'm not too savvy with it yet and I can't seem to find the LaunchBox forum on it. Is this user error, or is it something you have to set up as part of the forum? For Tapatalk use, extra scripts and such would have to be added to the forum... honestly, it's really not worth the effort. Back in the day Tapatalk was great because all we had was 'WAP'... but I presume these days your phone has a web-browser on it, no? ;)
  14. Wolf_ said Zork - a text based command prompt game. So I'm betting that would be emulated in dosbox? For Zork and other Text adventures you can use one of several zMachine emulators out in the wild. For this example I'm using the windows port of 'Frotz' (get the zip rather than installer to ensure it's portable) For the ROM I've dug out my Infocom text adventures disc. * First add Frotz or whatever emulator you like in Tools > Manage emulator and add Frotz, set at default for the platform (zMachine in this case). No additional parameters are needed. * Add your game either by ROM import and fight with metadata for a while or Ctrl+N to manually add the game. I found it best to scrape info from Wikipedia. * Ensure the ROM in LaunchBox is pointing at both your ROM file and you have "use an Emulator to play" selected and pointed at Frotz. You should be all done! Launch the game just like any other in your collection. As I said, the above is just an example. There are LOTS of other zMachine emulators and different builds of Frotz. Hope that helps!
  15. SentaiBrad said We don't really control that, that would be all the forum provider. Never say never :D This is 'Simple-Press', a WP forum, so not controlled by anyone other than our Glorious Leader in the AdminCP. <3
  16. Hiya, Little suggestion: Remove MSN (it doesn't exist anymore) from this forum user profiles and replace with Telegram. Come to think of it, a LaunchBox telegram group would be neat.
  17. I'm successfully running a NeoGeo rom pack with fb_alpha_neo_libretro RetroArch core and the pack's neogeo.zip (a copy placed in BOTH the directory with the roms and in the Retroarch 'System' folder) ** A problem that took me a while to figure out, that prevented them from launching properly, was "Extract ROM archives before running" in 'Manage Emulators' section. NEOGEO roms should not be extracted/unzipped. Just another thing to check and cross off the list of possible things that might be causing the problem.
  18. Hello! There are a couple of ways I can think of to do this; 1. - Place shortcuts to your applications in C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs - Import as per normal in LaunchBox where it will find the shortcuts that are now in your Start Menu. - Edit the relevant app in Launchbox and change the application path to a relative path (presuming this is what you want, using portable apps) 2. - Click 'Game' then 'Add' from the menu bar in LaunchBox (Ctrl+N) - Here you can add ANYTHING you like, search metadata and set the application path etc. Hope that helps!
  19. DOS76 said Oh its an Apple If you asked them about it today they'll tell you how they invented and revolutionised consoles. ;)
  20. fdsj82juifaa said There is no video option... :( that's why I was doing it the other way, I didn't think launchbox supported it... Is this for one particular ROM or your entire NES collection? If it's just one ROM it's worth noting that EmuMovies isn't "Complete" and still growing. If it's ALL roms and you've checked your EmuMovies credentials in Tools > Options and successfully tested with the 'Test' button I guess there's another issue, but will be good to rule the above out first. You should be seeing the following (when selecting all ROMs in my NES section):
  21. You may find it'll be far far easier to just use LaunchBox to import the movies and images for your ROMs. - In 'Tools > Options > Search > EmuMovies' ensure you've set your EmuMovies account ID etc. - Select all your ROMs in a Platform (Ctrl+A) and right click 'Tools' then 'Download Metadata and Images' - Select 'Search for game information from LaunchBox Games DB' - Ensure the 'Front Box Art' is selected on the next page. - Next it will parse all the ROMs with EmuMovies where you can select which images to get and which quality of videos to download (choose depending on your system's storage and download speed). ** generally either Video_MP4 or Video_MP4_HD is all that's really needed but it's totally up to you. With those settings you're ready to go. LaunchBox will do the work for you without the need for any 3rd party programs. ** Is the 3rd party program endorsed/officially recognised by EmuMovies like LaunchBox is? ...if not it may be time to change your password on there, pronto.
  22. Mettlog said I'm fine if this a a small sized PC like an Intel NUC, but I still think this is a kind of overkill because they are too expensive for what they do and just don't neccessarily fit into the concept NUCs are super cheap these days at around £100. A Celeron NUC (which you can actually see one in my photo above) has been living as my PLEX sever and strangely has been powerful enough to transcode 4 streams at once, so definitely as viable, if not infinitely more useful than an Android device** ** You could just have LaunchBox sit on your cloud-drive to sync or even on a NAS and run it natively on your smaller TV device rather than streaming. This will also give less controller lag. You've gotten me thinking now about an Arcade Big-Box build since the NUC comes with a VESA mount to directly attach to a monitor... Hmm... <3 So many exciting possibilities! With the hardware issue aside, I'd presume any kind of streaming like this would have to be a general 'full screen' capture rather than application specific since there'll be a multitude of emulators, windows games and apps etc to cater for. So that decision would have to be weather it's really worth including (it's not going to be an easy job to maintain) or if deciding if one of the many 3rd party steamlink-like programs would be better for this niche.
  23. There are Sooooooooo many options to do this these days. I have a several years old LG TV and even that lets me use the TV as a 2nd screen either extended or mirrored etc via Intel WiDi. If you have a smart TV that connects to your router/internet, it might be worth checking you can already stream straight to it without the addition of extra boxes or software, even on older devices like mine. In Windows 10 (and 8) simply click notifications (next to the clock on the taskbar) and select 'Project'. From the 'Project' menu you can choose how you want the Wireless display to be shown, just like any other additional monitor. Your TV may need to be in a certain mode, my LG for example has an obvious 'Screen Share' channel. ** Additional Tips: Always set your TV's colour scheme to 'Game Mode', as this uses less processing thus reducing lag between you pressing a button on your controller and something happening on screen.
