legolas119
Hi i'm searching for the best Nes emulator and actually i have configured Nestopia in Retroarch. But i read that Higan (taht is, i think, the best for super nes) is really good for nes too. But i read about this puNes, and it seems that it is the best choice for Nes emulator, am I right? Which is the latest release? I don't find the official hompage. It seems that 0.98 is the latest release? Where can I download the latest version? thanks! Lordmonkus
Higan is ok for NES but it is far from best or even near the top. The top 3 in terms of accuracy in order would be Bizhawk which claims is 100%, followed tightly by Mesen and then puNES. The difference in these 3 is basically 2% which is essentially nothing that anyone would ever notice at all. Check out the NES accuracy test chart over on Bizhawks website to get an idea of where each emulator stands in relation to each other. Mesen is not on the list though. http://tasvideos.org/EmulatorResources/NESAccuracyTests.html
legolas119
ah thanks! 1) Do you think that this is the rigt page where i can downlaod the latest PuNes? https://github.com/punesemu/puNES 2) and the BizHawk is here https://github.com/TASVideos/BizHawk ? And Mesen here: https://www.mesen.ca/index.php#Downloads 3) Are there any screenshot where i can compare the differences (if it is possible...) between these 3 emulators? I read that Mesen misinterprets the 8:7 aspect ratio as a display aspect ratio when it should be a pixel aspect ratio, resulting in an improperly stretched display. Is it true? 4) I read here http://tasvideos.org/EmulatorResources/NESAccuracyTests.html that puNes has 98.08% and BizHawk 100% . But BizHawk is a line command emulator? And what is "Amount" at the top of the list? It has 100%. Is it Mesen? thanks!
Lordmonkus
That site is probably fine but here is the official thread for it with information http://forums.nesdev.com/viewtopic.php?t=6928 Bizhawk will work fine with the command line and in Launchbox. 8:7 ratio if I remember correctly is the correct aspect ratio that the NES actually output at but CRT televisions altered it to 4:3 because that was just what they did. Basically do you want the aspect ratio of the TVs or the actual output ratio of the console ? That is a personal preference thing. I don't think you will find any screenshots showing differences because once you get to that level of accuracy the differences are so extremely minor and not even visible. I would just suggest trying each emulator out and see which you prefer.
heelsinc
Do I need any special command lines for bizhawk to work in launchbox?
Lordmonkus
None that I am aware of but I also don't use it but I can do some quick testing to see. Edit: Nope, none needed. Though you may need an AHK script to close it out properly with your controller.
heelsinc
whats an AHK scrpit and how do I make that?
Lordmonkus
In the Manage Emulators window in Launchbox go to you Bizhawk emulator and then go to the AutoHotkey Script tab and put this code in there $Esc:: { Process, Close, {{{StartupEXE}}} }
heelsinc
Holy shit this looks so much better than the cores in RA
heelsinc
there doesn't seem to be a way to tell it to launch in full screen mode though unless I'm missing the option somewhere
Lordmonkus
Not really sure how it looks better unless you have the bilinear filtering on in RA or something. Alt + Enter will full screen it and the next time it loads it should remember that and load full screen.
heelsinc
in RA my Mario is all red and the colors look way off compared. Maybe I have some setting screwed up.
Lordmonkus
Maybe, you may have messed with the palette as well which depending on the one you have selected can look super funky.
heelsinc
ahh any idea what I should switch around to make it look better?
Lordmonkus
In RA ? With an NES game loaded up open the quick menu and go into the options window for that core and look for Palette and then press left or right to change. Try them out until you find the one that looks the way you want.
heelsinc
perfect. Thank you so much for that! Mario no longer looks like he got an awful sun burn.

mothergoose729
Very interesting! Glad I came across this thread. i am curious to know... is there any tangible differences between this and Nestopia in retroarch? I generally prefer using the most accurate emulators available, just for accuracy's sake, but I am curious to know if there are any differences that I can see or hear while playing a NES game?
