Launch box not working after failed update

I’ll say sorry right off the bat because I didn’t note down the error when my Lauchbox update failed, but anyhoo!

I’m running Windows 10 and had just done some windows updates. I ran Bigbox and played around for a bit and got a notification for the latest beta update. I declined the update and carried on with B.B., I later closed down B.B. and launched LB.

The update process then started and the typical LB install window with progress bar appeared. Right at the beginning of the process I got an error saying something like this

‘cannot overwrite file when it is already present, retry , ignore (not recommended) or quit”

I’m positive however that it was worded differently but I can’t recall.

I selected quit or abort and it mentioned reverting back to previous state, or something like that.

I now have no Launchbox.exe, but do have a BigBox.exe, however Bigbox will not run.

How can I get things back up and running without altering or damaging my settings and files?

Is there a repair option within the installer?

Hope you guys can help

Tried what you said and I get the following screen. When I abort the process it says it will revert back to the previous version. It doesn't do it properly and I have to run the 8.6 beta 13 install to get it running. As soon as I get the option to upgrade to the latest version it will fail and I get the screen I've attached.

Any ideas?

In the past when I have gotten that it is because LB is still running in the background while trying to update usually waiting a little used to fix it but I haven't had that happen in a while. If worst comes to worst you can try doing a fresh install of LB to a new folder and then copying your Data, Images, Manuals, Music and Video folders plus any setting files from the root directory to your new build. Games folder to if you keep your Games within LB.

Do yourself a favor and just can Windows 10. After I erased 10 and loaded Windows 7 haven't had a problem with anything related to emulation (BigBox), gaming and downloading in general. Windows 10 is for selling you stuff, like your phone, but for gaming and emulation creativity it's a POS. Windows 7 is the last good gamers choice besides, of course, Linux - but it's not proprietary with LaunchBox.

Thats just not true at all. Windows 10 is just fine, far better than 7 in my opinion. if you were having issues with 10 than thats down to your own personal system and setup. Also Windows 7 is at end of life and wont be updated soon, and that is not what you want with a OS connected to the internet.

In regards to LB in the past when a OS reaches EOL then Jason stops supporting it don't know if that will be the case with Windows 7 since it has a bigger user base than say Vista and XP did but to people who may consider following advice to ditch 10 for 7 its something to consider.

I will clarify a bit - I don't believe one should get rid of Windows 10 if it's a typical family internet surfing unit. I have my Windows 10 computer so the wifey pooh can get on and buy her shoes, play BoobTube and do FacePlant. It's very secure for that kind of stuff and I will not deny that. Then I have my emulation comp which runs Windows 7, includes BigBox (which works great now that I loaded 7, got rid of rocketlauncher and set up my own personal build), my flight sim (which won't work well with 10), etc. and is almost never online. Then I have my ancient EQ/old PC game comp (yeah I still play that almost every night) and that is still sporting XP - just for old times sake. Now when did Windows stop supporting XP? I have had few problems through the years playing EQ online and zero which I couldn't take care of myself with the XP OS. I understand your concerns with my original simplistic statement, but as you can see, between the lines stuff fills a lot of space. I'm really not a Microsoft guy at heart and am, at this very moment, building my first Linux device. Why don't you guys see if you can get a launchbox version going for that!
