Automatic Import Restrictions

New Automatic Import feature with v13.12...any way to restrict/ignore certain file types from being imported (e.g. *.mp3, *.png, etc.) or ignore sub-directories? 

Currently have a RetroBat & Batocera build which share the same rom directory. File structure for those front-ends includes media sub-directories within the rom directories (and an xml). The non-game file types are being captured as games using auto import.

Would like to share the same rom directories with LB using the auto import by directory feature and not have to resort to importing by file.

Currently no. This is a new feature so the devs are actively working on updating. It can be a bit tricky to plan for all the variations as an example Pico8 emulator uses .png as rom file. So blacklisting that would prevent Pico8 from importing.  I would say if you are using that type of folder structure those other front ends use you might want to turn this feature off for now.

I have  a similar issue with one Mugen game. LB imports 53 files from the sound folder for some reason. I want to leave 'Automatic Import' enabled for Steam games and the like, but every time I delete the extra entries, close and reopen LB, they come back. If there was a way to either tell LB to exclude certain file types or if we can specify any folders that we don't want it to scrub for games, that would be a very helpful feature.

Automatic storefront import and Automatic ROM import are two different features and can be turned off/on independently of each other. Storefront auto-imports can be managed via Tools > Manage > Storefronts, Auto ROM imports has an on/off checkbox in Options (Tools > Options)

Can I turn on / off auto rom import only for specific platforms? I have some custom platforms that I don't want to get messed up (e.g.: PS3 disc games; PSN games).

For the auto rom import (Not the Storefront option) it is global. So you cannot turn on/off per platform.

I agree, being able to tune the way the auto-importer works would be great. The mix of convenience and personalization is what makes LB special imo.

for me its useless feature. as its not simple that each rom is a single game. PC games, or xbox 360 games that are extracted tries to import all files. it should be possible to use folder names as rom or disable it for system that are not based on a single rom

Thanks for the feedback. Things to note:

  • PC Games are already excluded automatically from this system (Arcade games are too as well)
  • Most Xbox 360 games are simply iso files, which are recommended. We know about GoD format, and we are still working through what to do about these types which obviously complicates matters

In the meantime, the beta (and subsequently version 13.17) has a way to disable the auto-import feature on a per-platform basis. We are going through every problematic platform that we know about, and at the moment that list is fairly small at this point. If anyone know about any other problematic platforms, we'd love to hear about them so we can take a stab at making them work with our automated system.

This is all my platforms that will cause problems with auto import

  • Xbox 360 (Jtag extracted with XisoExtract Or GOD)
  • Xbox Original XBE Extracted games
  • PC Games (Not storefront) i have a folder only with portable games where i place an ahk script to run the specific exe file in each folder
  • TeknoParrot games (I have organized the teknoparrot folder into different systems. like Sega RingEdge,Sega RingEdge2 and all the other systems based on pc and linux)
  • American Laser Games
  • Daphne
  • Singe2 Games (Hypseus Singe)
  • Mame with CHD folders in the rom directory
  • Future Pinball
  • MS-Dos Games (DOSBOX)
  • Mugen
  • NESiCAxLive
  • WoW Action Max

PC Games, make sure the scrape as value is set to Windows. The system is designed to not auto-import any Windows games.

MS-DOS - set the scrape as value to MS-DOS. The system is designed to not auto-import any MS-DOS games.

TeknoParrot, American Laser Games, Daphne, Singe2, MESiCAxLive, MAME, set the scrape as value to Arcade. The system is designed to not auto-import any Arcade games.

Future Pinball - make sure you set the scrape as value to Pinball. The system is designed to not auto-import any Pinball games.

Out of your list, I believe WoW Action Max is the only platform we'd have to exclude automatically, so thanks for that. In the meantime, if you are up on the latest beta, you can exclude this platform under its Edit Platform window.

Thanks for the reply. Great info i was too afraid to enable auto import on my full collection and just assumed it was a on/off feature for everything. hope in the future it will be more transparent.

Do you know what happens if a source is not available when launchbox is started, Because my game source is on a NAS that is not always turned on. more if it thinks the games has been removed and it starts to clean all libraries

In the game details (assuming you are using the default theme), the play button will turn turn gray and say something like UNAVAILABLE.

Outside of that, nothing else will happen. Deleting game entries is a manual process, so just don't run the scan for removed games tool :P

thanks for the answer. i also started with a new launchboxdev where i try some of the stuff that could break configs or game setups. have too much manual stuff added to my setup and too many hours spend on the ultimate setup

Is there a chance that Launchbox could skip all manifest.bml files?
They are necessary files for snes rom with better audio supported by higan and they appear as games with the auto-import functionality sadly.
