  5. I’ll kick things off! For some of my favorite collection-style games, I like to create playlists that include both the collection itself and the original releases of each game it features. It’s definitely a bit manual, but I love checking off the original releases as I complete them and easily comparing them with their remastered versions! The ā€˜possible ports’ feature is another great way to do this, but there’s something special about having my favorite hand-picked collections all together in one place. How about you? Looking forward to hearing your tips and favorite methods. And don’t worry, this isn’t just about collection-style games—share any tidbit or trick you love to use to manage any of your games in LaunchBox!
  6. Thanks for all the fantastic ideas, everyone! There’s so much potential for bonus content in games, and you’ve shared some excellent examples Day 4 of the gauntlet is now closed, and look at that, we have a draw! These 2 games got exactly the same number of votes. I guess that means... They're both going through to the final round! 😱 The 2 winners are āļø Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster ⭐ āļø Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2 ⭐ The final round is here, it's time to choose which game is the king of the collections. For those who can’t attend, don’t worry—we’ll be writing up answers and posting a recap here. The thread will be temporarily locked, but we’ll reopen it once the recap is posted. The recap will likely be up late next week. Hope to catch some of you on the closing stream! Otherwise, we’ll post an update soon. Cheers,
  9. Can you believe it? LaunchBox is turning 11 years old this month! From humble beginnings to a thriving and passionate community, the team has grown from a single visionary to a collaborative team of over 10 people in various full-time and part-time capacities. Since this week is a time of celebration for us, we want to shine a light on some of the amazing folks who are helping to shape the future of LaunchBox and make it what it is today. While we won’t be able to feature everyone on the team, and there are also multiple contributors both within and outside the community, we hope these posts offer some insight into some of the people working behind the scenes at LaunchBox who you might not know. This will give you a glimpse into their roles and history with the project. We're continuing our series of team members with Sal a.k.a @RetroPython Please introduce yourself and describe your role on the team Hi there! I’m Sal, though you might know me better as RetroPython. I was fortunate enough to join the LaunchBox team about a year ago, and what a fantastic journey it’s been. My role revolves around bringing a unique retro flair to our video content, especially tutorials. From the start, I knew I wanted to do more than just teach—I wanted to create an experience. My goal with each tutorial is to make it engaging and informative while tapping into that deep well of nostalgia we all share. Whether it’s walking you through setting up a beloved classic system or uncovering hidden LaunchBox features, I strive to spark those memories of the first time we played these iconic games. It’s about more than just revisiting the past—it’s about reliving those magical moments when gaming was pure and full of wonder. Every video I create is a chance to connect with our amazing community, share the joy of retro gaming, and ensure that the LaunchBox experience is as seamless and enjoyable as possible. What is your history with LaunchBox? I was once a dedicated Hyperspin user, deeply invested in building my arcade setup. But over time, I grew increasingly frustrated with the complicated setup process and the lack of consistent updates. It became more of a chore than a joy, and I realized I needed something better—something that would let me focus more on enjoying the games rather than wrestling with the software. About eight years ago, during one of my searches for a better solution, I stumbled upon Simply Austin’s LaunchBox videos. That moment was a turning point. The way Austin showcased LaunchBox opened my eyes to a whole new world of possibilities. It wasn’t just about a better interface; it was about a front end that made everything easier, more intuitive, and infinitely more enjoyable. The transition felt like a breath of fresh air, as LaunchBox brought all the features I wanted without the headaches I had grown used to. Since that discovery, LaunchBox has been my go-to solution, completely transforming my approach to retro gaming. It’s not just a tool; it’s a game changer. The flexibility, ease of use, and constant updates have kept me hooked, and I haven’t looked back since. There’s simply nothing better out there—LaunchBox is, without a doubt, the best way to relive those classic gaming experiences. What advice would you give to new LaunchBox users? The possibilities with LaunchBox are truly endless. It’s a platform that opens up a world of retro gaming, where you can bring together all your favorite classics in one beautifully organized space. But with so much to explore and collect, it’s easy to get caught up in the thrill of building your library, sometimes to the point where you forget the very reason you started—playing the games! LaunchBox is designed with the gamer in mind, offering a wide range of features that make the setup process as smooth and efficient as possible. Whether you’re organizing your collection, setting up emulators, or customizing your front end, LaunchBox simplifies the steps so you can spend less time tinkering and more time actually enjoying your games. It’s all about getting you to that moment where you can sit back, controller in hand, and dive into the nostalgia of your favorite titles. So, while it’s fun to amass an impressive collection, don’t lose sight of what matters most—the gameplay. LaunchBox gives you everything you need to streamline the process, making it easier than ever to jump right into the action. So go ahead, fire up your favorite game, and start playing. After all, that’s what it’s all about! What do you think is the most underrated LaunchBox feature? Without a doubt, MAME High Scores and RetroAchievements have completely transformed the way we experience our favorite classic games. We’ve all spent countless hours playing these timeless titles, but now, with these features, there’s an added layer of excitement. MAME High Scores let you track and compete for the top spot, reigniting that competitive spirit we all remember from the arcades. Meanwhile, RetroAchievements bring a new dimension to gameplay, challenging you to unlock milestones and earn rewards that showcase your skills. These options don’t just give you a reason to replay those beloved games—they make every session feel fresh and rewarding. It’s about more than just nostalgia; it’s about pushing your limits and securing those bragging rights. Whether you’re aiming for the highest score or unlocking every achievement, it’s time to dive back in and prove you’re still the best! What upcoming features or developments in LaunchBox are you most looking forward to? I’m thrilled about the new feature that automatically downloads emulators in LaunchBox. It’s made the whole process of getting into classic gaming even smoother. Now, it’s easier than ever to dive into those hard-to-emulate systems like the Atari Jaguar or to relive the magic of point-and-click adventures with ScummVM. Recently, I found myself lost in a marathon of old LucasArts games, something I hadn’t done in years. Thanks to how effortless it is to set up ScummVM with LaunchBox, I was able to jump right into those nostalgic adventures without any hassle. The convenience and simplicity of this feature have reignited my love for these classics. With each update, LaunchBox keeps pushing the boundaries of what’s possible, and I can’t wait to see what they’ll introduce next. The future looks incredibly exciting for retro gaming enthusiasts like us! What’s your go-to gaming setup currently? I’m a bit of a gaming enthusiast, playing on everything from original consoles to modern devices. But one of my favorite projects has been building a ā€œRetro Pythonā€ themed bar top arcade for my basement home theater room. This thing has become a centerpiece of fun—whether it’s classics like Wrestlefest, NBA JAM, or newer hits like Shredder’s Revenge, there’s always someone playing on it. The nostalgia doesn’t stop there, though. I’m currently working on building a custom stand for the arcade, complete with shelving inside to store controllers, along with a collection of classic VHS tapes and LaserDiscs. It’s all about embracing that retro vibe and bringing back the feeling of those golden gaming years. Retro all the way! The RetroPython-themed bar top arcade is so popular in our household that I almost feel like I need to stack my quarters on the edge to claim the next turn, just like we did in the old days! How do you envision the future of retro gaming? During the pandemic, the demand for retro games skyrocketed, and it’s easy to see why—just look at the prices of old consoles. They’ve increased four to five times compared to pre-pandemic levels, and the trend doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. Retro gaming is more popular than ever, but in today’s fast-paced world, many of us are constantly on the go, making it tough to find the time to sit down and play like we used to. That’s where handhelds come in—they’re the perfect gateway for retro gaming in our busy lives. I’m thrilled to see the incredible handheld devices that are being developed, offering a convenient way to enjoy classic games no matter where you are. And with LaunchBox enhancing the experience on these devices, it’s never been easier to keep that retro gaming spirit alive, even when life gets hectic. The future of gaming on the go looks bright, and I can’t wait to see how it continues to evolve! And if you’re also passionate about retro handhelds, don’t miss our 11th birthday celebration giveaway—there are some fantastic handhelds up for grabs!
  10. YES! I saw this as well, maybe give us some developer diaries who thought those tank controls were a good idea But that's part of its charm ā¤ļø
  11. Ooooh very good pick! Yes Sonic Mega Collection is definitely up there with some of the best value and extra content in a collection!
  12. I’ll get us started! I’m a big fan of the ā€œinteractive museumā€ feature. Games like Kirby’s Dream Collection do this incredibly well by placing the included games within a timeline. It’s such a great way to see how far the series has come and to discover all the fun little trivia points from that era. It adds so much context and nostalgia to the experience!
  13. Some fantastic discussions happening here! Remasters can be a hot topic, but it seems most agree that audio and visual overhauls are the standard. When it comes to control or gameplay updates, it can vary wildly depending on the specific game. Day 3 of the gauntlet is now complete and the winning game is... āļø TOMB RAIDER I-III REMASTERED āļø A well-regarded remaster, but it was honestly a class call between this and Ninja Gaiden. This will be one of the games with Steam keys up for grabs at the end of the event. Day 4 of the Great Game Gauntlet is now open, focusing on duologies!
  14. Rules ā„¹ļø For a full list of rules and details on this event, please check out our master post here To be eligible to win, make sure you vote on the poll and answer the question via the comments section of this post DAY 4 šŸ… Welcome to Day 4 of the Great Game Gauntlet! šŸ‘‘ With LaunchBox embodying the spirit of collecting, we’re on a quest to discover: What makes a great video game collection? Today, we're looking at: Remastered Duology Collections! Continuing yesterday’s theme of remasters, today we’re focusing on duology collections. Whether it’s an ā€œHDā€ makeover or a complete reworking of both games from the ground up with some added bonuses, these paired games are inseparable in our minds. The duology remastered combo offers great value, making it hard to imagine one without the other. Today’s lineup of games contains classic duologies that have been remastered in some shape or form for modern platforms: Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2 Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5 Remix Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania Klonoa: Phantasy Reverie Series A lot of folks yesterday mentioned that graphic and audio overhauls are key to a great remaster, with mixed opinions on controls and gameplay updates (game-dependent). Another interesting topic that came up was bonus content, so we're going to dive into that. If you want a chance to win one of the above games, make sure to cast your vote for the game you’d like to see advance to the next round and answer this question: ā“What types of bonus content do you think takes a remaster or collection to the next level ā“ What types of bonus content take a collection from a simple re-release to an incredible package? Do you love concept art, manuals, developer interviews, or something more substantial like unreleased playable prototypes? Share your thoughts, and feel free to give examples of bonus content done right—or suggest something new that no one has done before but would be awesome to see. We’d love to hear what you think! šŸ•¹ļø

This will give you a glimpse into their roles and history with the project. We're continuing our series of team members with Andriy a.k.a @x4ml Please introduce yourself and describe your role on the team Hi, I’m Andriy, but you might know me as x4ml on the forums. I joined the LaunchBox team in August 2023. My role is to support the Android application and develop new features that enhance the mobile experience. I’m here to turn your ideas into reality, making sure the mobile app continues to evolve and meet your needs. Whether it’s fixing bugs or implementing exciting new features, I’m dedicated to making the Android version of LaunchBox the best it can be. A little snapshot of my daily workspace 😬 What is your history with gaming? I started my gaming journey with the Sony PlayStation. I was so hooked that I’d even give up my ice cream money just to spend two hours at a computer club playing Crash Bandicoot. Over the years, my passion for console gaming faded when my parents bought me a PC, but it never completely went away. Since discovering LaunchBox, my love for nostalgic games has been reignited, and I’m excited to dive back into those classic experiences once again. LaunchBox gave me an excuse to dust off this old classic again! What’s the most challenging aspect of your role? I’d say the most challenging part is addressing bugs that are tricky to reproduce. I’m driven to find solutions, but when bugs don’t happen consistently or come and go, it can feel like trying to find a needle in a haystack! However, the satisfaction of finally reproducing and fixing the issue is incredibly gratifying. What are some of your proudest moments while working on LaunchBox? My proudest moments are when we publish a new update and users take the time to thank us on the forum for the new features and improvements. Seeing the positive impact our work has on the community makes all the effort worthwhile. It’s incredibly rewarding to know that what we’re building is appreciated and making a difference for the users. What upcoming features or developments in LaunchBox for Android are you most looking forward to? I can’t reveal all the features we’re working on for future versions, but there’s one idea I’m really excited about. We’re developing an extraordinary feature for animated transitions between pages, and the best part is that users will be able to customize these transitions to match their own styles. It’s going to add a whole new level of personalization and flair to the app! If you had a magic wand, what LaunchBox feature would you wish into existence? I’d love to develop a version of the app for iOS devices. It would be fantastic to bring the LaunchBox experience to even more users on different platforms. Even though the iOS emulation scene feels like it is just getting started, it would be amazing to jump through all the technical hurdles to make it a reality. There are a lot of barriers to overcome there, but who knows, maybe someday! The iOS emulation scene is only just getting started What is your favorite game of all time and why? When it comes to PC games, Counter-Strike is my all-time favorite—whether it’s 1.6, Global Offensive, or CS 2. The competitive gameplay and the community have always kept me hooked. On the console side, I have a special love for Contra. The fast-paced action and co-op gameplay bring back great memories every time I play it. You don't get much of a better opening level than this šŸ’Ŗ Do you have any hobbies outside of gaming? I’m really into fishing. I can spend 12 hours out there and come home without catching a single fish, but I love it. For me, fishing is pure relaxation—a way to unwind and enjoy some peace and quiet, regardless of the outcome. Maybe I should explore the world of fishing games šŸ˜‰ I know there’s a big fanbase for those, but for me, nothing beats the real thing for peak relaxation. I’ve heard this one is pretty good—maybe some arcade fishing die-hards can share their suggestions 😬 Stay tuned for more "Meet The Team" posts coming throughout the week! šŸŽ‰
  16. I’ll kick things off—personally, I love when remasters give us options. It’s great when developers update the games but allow us to revert to the original if we want. For example, being able to switch graphical styles on the fly in Tomb Raider Remastered or choosing between original and remastered soundtracks. It’s a fantastic way to honor the original while letting us see how far the game has come. Dream scenario: Give me a Superman 64 remaster with an option to toggle between the original controls and ones that are actually usable! šŸ˜‰ Maybe even a mode that randomly switches back to the original controls without warning and tie some achievements to it! 😱
  17. Thank you everyone for your amazing suggestions! If game companies come across this thread, we're leaving free money ideas on the table for them šŸ˜‰ Day 2 of the gauntlet is now complete and the winning game is... šŸŽ® SEGA GENESIS & MEGA DRIVE CLASSICS šŸ¦” The SEGA fans have spoken! This will be one of the games with Steam keys up for grabs at the end of the event. Day 3 of the Great Game Gauntlet is now open, moving into a more modern era with video game trilogy remasters!

Today, we're looking at: Remastered Trilogy Collections! We’re diving into a more modern era with classic game trilogies that have been updated and reworked for today's gamers. These trilogies often take beloved games and their sequels, reimagining various aspects like graphics, controls, and sometimes even a complete overhaul of the gameplay itself. It’s all about blending nostalgia with modern enhancements, giving old favorites a fresh new feel. Today’s lineup of games contains classic trilogies that have been remastered in some shape or form for modern platforms: Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy Spyro Reignited Trilogy Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy Ninja Gaiden Master Collection If you want a chance to win one of these, make sure to cast your vote for the game you’d like to see advance to the next round and answer this question: ā“ What elements do you think are essential for a successful remaster ā“ Do you prefer updated controls, or do you like to keep the games exactly as they were? Are you more focused on updated music and visuals, or do you enjoy bonus content added to the original? What about games that are completely reimagined from scratch? Share your thoughts, and feel free to give us examples of remasters done right (and maybe those that missed the mark 🤦). We’d love to hear what you think!
  19. Can you believe it? LaunchBox is turning 11 years old this month! We're continuing our series of team members with Brian a.k.a @faeran Please introduce yourself and describe your role on the team Hi, my name is Brian and I’m the Product Manager on the team. I oversee everything related to LaunchBox, from the Windows and Android apps to the websites, support channels, videos, theming, and more. If you’ve seen it or used it, chances are I’ve had a hand in it in some way. What is your history with LaunchBox? Like everyone else here, I started as a fan of LaunchBox. I fell in love with it back in 2016 when I built my first setup. The nostalgia was incredible, and I wanted a Big Box theme that captured the feeling I had as a kid blowing into my NES cartridges. I never imagined my passion for retro gaming would turn into a career, but I’m grateful every day that I get to wake up and work on the next big thing for our amazing community. A tiny snapshot of my collection highlighting some of favorite games of all time! What's the most challenging aspect of your role? Time. Our list of features we'd like to get to is very large and is always growing. It feels like each time we check something off the list another 5 items get added. Because of this, we have to do a good job of balancing which features we work on. Some features may seem like quick wins but turn into development nightmares, while others that seem complex end up being easier than expected. It’s always surprising to see which is which! What has been your proudest moment while working on LaunchBox? The Game Discovery Center. We had lofty ambitions when building that out, and while a number of things got left on the cutting room floor, the majority of what we set out to do made it into the feature. We had a lot of questions going into that project, especially on the technical side, where we had to make sure we could even create an ever-changing and endless list of lists without ruining the user experience. We had to set our expectations on how we wanted our theming engine to work with it and make sure that it accommodated a dream theme someone might end up creating in the future. I find myself getting lost for hours in the Game Discovery Centre (in a good way 🤩) What do you think is the most underrated LaunchBox feature? It’s always the little things that most people wouldn’t really notice. For example, most people wouldn’t realize just how complex our image priority system is when downloading images from the LaunchBox Games Database. Previously, we had about a 5-6-step process to identify the best image to download based on a myriad of scenarios. Without going too deep into the weeds, over time, certain changes to the LaunchBox Games Database broke the image download priority process, causing incorrect images to be downloaded for games. We had to dig deep to figure out what had changed, and then build a brand-new image priority process that accounted for those changes. It’s one of those processes that, when it works, most users wouldn’t even notice. The LaunchBox Games Database is full of rich vibrant media for enhancing your collection What is your favorite game of all time and why? How does someone choose just one? I have a soft spot for Sierra Online. My memories of loading up Space Quest 3, King’s Quest 6, Conquests of Camelot, and many others pull at my nostalgic heartstrings. These games shaped the ones I gravitate toward even today. I was mesmerized the first time I loaded Circle of Blood (aka Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars) and watched the opening sequence, or followed the murder mystery in Blade Runner. This led me to games like Outcast with its breathtaking open-world adventure, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic with its crazy plot twist, and Jade Empire with its equally surprising twists. By now, you can probably see that I’m heavily drawn to story-centric games and am always on the lookout for the next one to play. A good ol' era of gaming šŸ˜ Stay tuned for more "Meet The Team" posts coming throughout the week! šŸŽ‰
  20. To get us started: Here’s my idea in just four words: Microsoft Entertainment Pack Collection! If you had a Windows PC in the early ’90s, you’ve definitely played some of these classics. Let’s bundle Entertainment Packs 1-4 into a single collection, add modern controller support, online leaderboards and maybe even throw in some achievements. Imagine playing Chip’s Challenge, SkiFree, JezzBall, Rodent’s Revenge, Minesweeper, Pipe Dream, and more—all in one nostalgic package! A man can dream... šŸ’
  21. Thank you everyone for some amazing suggestions! Day 1 of the gauntlet is now complete and the winning game is šŸ§› CASTLEVANIA ADVANCE COLLECTION šŸ§› This one snuck in right at the last minute, but GBA fans rejoice, this will be one of the games with Steam keys up for grabs at the end of the event. Day 2 of the Great Game Gauntlet is now open, shifting from game series collections to company collections - While yesterday’s question focused on game series, don’t worry if you submitted a company collection idea there—you’re welcome to re-use it for Day 2! - Also, don’t worry if someone already picked the company you wanted to highlight. Go ahead and post it again—tell us why you chose it, or expand on the ideas. Looking forward to seeing your submissions for Day 2

Today, we're looking at: Video Game Company Collections! Continuing yesterday's discussion about video game series getting their own collections, we often see entire companies releasing collections of their historical games. These collections typically celebrate a milestone like an anniversary or the legacy of a specific console. Some offer a nostalgic look at a company’s history, while others go the extra mile by including behind-the-scenes content and documentaries. It’s a fantastic way to learn more about the heritage of these companies and appreciate their journey through the years. Today’s lineup of games celebrates key players in the gaming industry with collections that highlight their storied pasts. Atari 50: The Anniversary Collection Disney Classic Games Collection SEGA Mega Drive & Genesis Classics SNK 40th Anniversary Collection Capcom Arcade Stadium 2nd If you want a chance to win one of these, make sure to cast your vote for the game you’d like to see advance to the next round and answer this question: ā“ Which company do you believe is most deserving of their own game collection, and why? ā“ So, which company would you pick? What historical games from their catalogue do you think should be included? And what bonus content would you love to see that dives deeper into their legacy? Notes: - While yesterday’s question focused on game series, don’t worry if you submitted a company collection idea there—you’re welcome to re-use it here! - Also, don’t worry if someone already picked the company you wanted to highlight. Go ahead and post it again—tell us why you chose it, or expand on the ideas.
  23. We're continuing our series of team members with Josh a.k.a @MysterNybble Please introduce yourself and describe your role on the team I’m Josh, aka MysterNybble, also known as the-guy-behind-the-curtains. I handle the business side of things while wearing all sorts of hats—sometimes even simultaneously! Whether it’s strategy, operations, or just jumping into whatever needs doing, I’m the go-to for keeping everything running smoothly behind the scenes. What is your history with LaunchBox? I’ve been around since before LaunchBox was even a thing. Jason was actually an employee of mine back when he started developing it. I supported him in taking the leap to go full-time with LaunchBox and did my part in helping him get it off the ground. Since then, I’ve been an advisor, and more recently I look after the day-to-day oversight. So, you could say I’ve been involved from the very beginning. What’s your favorite part of working with the LaunchBox community? While I mostly lurk in the community, I’m constantly amazed by the unique and creative ways people are using LaunchBox. From custom themes and innovative plugins to organizing collections beyond just video games, there’s always something new that surprises me. Half the time, I find myself thinking, ā€œWhy didn’t I think of that?ā€ and feeling inspired to try it out myself! It’s incredible to see the creativity and passion that our community brings to the table, and it keeps me excited about what’s next. Our community never ceases to amaze me with the creative themes they come up with! What upcoming features or developments in LaunchBox are you most looking forward to? There’s so much to be excited about! Even after eleven years of development, we’re still brimming with ideas to enhance the gaming experience. I’m especially excited about some of the upcoming features that will make setting up and using LaunchBox smoother than ever. We’re also working on creating a seamless household ecosystem where all your devices just… work together effortlessly. The future is looking bright, and I can’t wait to see where it takes us! Our new Save Management features let you backup and manage multiple save files, directly within LaunchBox What is your favorite game of all time and why? I’ve played more Minecraft than I’d like to admit! I always play in survival mode and love designing and building redstone contraptions and resource farms. Minecraft is the perfect way for me to unwind after a busy or stressful day, and it still keeps me engaged after all these years. There’s something endlessly satisfying about the creative freedom it offers, and it never gets old. After a long day at work, Minecraft has always been the perfect game for me to kick back and relax. Can you share a fun fact about yourself that the community might not know? I use my mouse sideways in front of my keyboard. It’s a little quirky, but it works for me! šŸ˜‰ Definitely not slacking off at work by scrolling through Big Box… Oh wait, that is work šŸ˜‰ Stay tuned for more "Meet The Team" posts coming throughout the week! šŸŽ‰
  24. Thanks @denmiclaw, that is much appreciated and glad to hear you enjoyed the stream. We've got a lot more where those came from šŸ˜„
  25. Thanks @Phanamatic, indeed one machine to rule them all 😃 I'll even use LB to log games that I can't play on PC, like certain mobile games or recent gen console games, just so it's all tracked together @Special T Nice, yeah translations are a great use for additional apps. I like the use of custom fields to add details about the translation too, neat! And thanks everyone for the kind words. I'll make sure everyone on the team sees all your kind comments, it keeps us all going
