I think the cue is really only important for multi disc games. But like I said, it's just good practice.

So as I understand it, adding the cue is instead of the iso is just good practice. However, I seem to recall that some cores in RetroArch don't play well with cues. This is a while ago, it could be fixed. So basically if you can launch the cue in standalone ra, import the cue files for that system.

No problem at all. Does it actually pull mugen artwork? I have a bunch of games but have only imported one as a test, and it brought up nothing in terms of art and metadata. Some of the other games have that stuff?

Well if you're doing a bulk import like that, go ahead and select any emu. Then once they are imported, go to the system in LB, Control A to select all the games at once, and then click edit. This will bring up the bulk edit menu, where you should be able to tell all the games not to use an emu.

Add the exe like a rom. Then in launchbox right click and edit it, and under the emulator tab tell it not to use an emulator. (Basically telling lb to launch it like an exe)

Just the exe. It works but there's very little to no art and metadata of course.

Unfortunately, even if you use and are familiar with rocketlauncher, you're going to have to set up a new module and emulator. I call it messtroarch. Once this is all done though, it'll work on most of the systems mess emulates.

I can set you up, Keltoigael. You'll need to be using Rocketlauncher, you'll need the 2015 mess core, which I can send you, and you'll need a mess bios pack. I'm not sure how other people do it, but the way I have it set up, don't need software lists or hashes or anything like that.

The work flow will be:
set up the launchbox plugin / default front end in Rocketlauncher first.
Then, import your first system into Launchbox, setting up Rocket Launcher (it has a space in the name in lb) as the emulator.
You have to restart Rocketlauncher every time you import a new system, so it can read LBs updated xmls.*
From then on, you'll import systems in launchbox first, choosing rl as the emulator, downloading desired media etc. and then open RL after and set up how you actually want to launch the games there. Rl should automatically populate with whatever you import into Launchbox if you've set it up right.
In terms of media, I downloaded fresh. I think you said you have an emumovies account? The reason is twofold. A: if you're anything like me, setting up HyperSpin left me with mixmatched sets of artwork and a whole lot of extra files. On my new drive, I wanted it to be as clean as possible. B: HyperSpin as you know is very no intro centric in naming. LaunchBox is not. The good news is that Launchbox can mostly recognize no intro games, so no rom renaming necessary. However, Launchbox references its own database and the naming there is typically like no intro without the region tag. On import, LaunchBox will automatically give your games a title (if it can find it) and the artwork will be named after that title and amended with numbers for multiple files.
Like Super Metroid (USA).sfc will import as
Super Metroid
And the box art, for example, will be named
Super Metroid - 01
Super Metroid - 02
Etc.
I wanted my artwork to be named in the best way possible for LaunchBox.
Note that LaunchBox does seem to recognize most if not all art that is named with the no intro naming convention, so feasibly you CAN just move the art from your HyperSpin directory to your Launchbox one. Or even change the paths in LB to point to your HyperSpin Media folders. It's really a personal choice.
The easier (and better continuity) route is to let LB download all the art anew. This will also get you any new stuff that's been uploaded since you last downloaded art for HyperSpin. However, this is not the FAST way. LB can take upwards to an hour (on my internet) for the bigger systems. If you don't really care about the naming, you CAN save some time during import by not downloading just the videos and manuals but downloading everything else. This speeds the import up, and then you can just copy the videos from your HyperSpin install.
The faster way is to just to copy all the media over into the LB folders. MUCH Faster. But... LB pulls and uses stuff that HyperSpin doesn't... for instance screenshots which can be displayed (and look good) as BoxArt for Systems that don't have much or any boxart. I'm thinking about stuff like Apple II, etc.
Ultimately it's going to be a personal choice. If you want maximum correctly named art that is easily updated every time the LB database or emumovies gets an update, just download everything new.
If not, you can input whatever art you want from not just HyperSpin but any source.

Personally, I started from scratch... but I also bought a new SSD hard drive specifically for launchbox. After years of setting up hyperspin and rl, I trying to sort through all the extra files etc I probably downloaded or become obsolete didn't feel worth it on the old drive. If it's the same hard drive and you're just adding lb to your setup, no reason not to just fix/update there. In terms of RL, launchbox will launch just fine without it. It all depends on if you want the extra features, and, in my opinion how good you are with command lines. I'm not at all, but it seems like lb is capable of doing a lot of stuff rl does but through commands. No fade, no suspend front end, and no Pause yet though.

True story. I stayed monthly for years. The dude who runs emumovies reached out to me and was like "you already paid more than a lifetime sub. I just made you a lifetime member." I tried to argue that I didn't mind and really appreciated the work but he wouldn't have it. That's how I got my lifetime sub there.

I've noticed some shaders don't play in RetroArch, but for me personally, I'd just not use that shader. Compatibility wise for many systems it's just as good or better than the standalone counterparts. I use it for everything it will emulate. Even mame. Also, you can try the glupen64core.

What sucks for is when I have a friend over to show off, I'm like pick any game, literally any game made in the last 30 years. They pick one, usually an easy one, and I'm like got it! The moment is short lived though because I go to launch it and then remember that oh I've been tweaking that system and never finished so it errors out for whatever reason and I look like I'm full of shit about having all this stuff working.

Big Fish, and pop they probably bought and installed the games. Amiga CD32, just use fsuae, I think. Just have to locate the right bios. I'm not sure about pinball.

I appreciate all the responses! I actually did wind up figuring this out a few days ago. Step one was getting an updated version of mame and roms. But for rocketlauncher users, the step that's easy to miss is that you have to point rocketlauncher to your mame roms even if it's not a mame system. So I set my apple II rompath to both my apple II roms AND to my mame roms and joy.

Rocketlauncher is automatically going to read your lb database and use that, if everything is set up right. You don't need to add any systems or games directly to rocketlauncher.

It's probably not compatible with the OS. I'm not sure how to make the hard copy work on windows 10, but I can help you get DOSBOX up and running if you're really wanting to play it.

I only imported the one game to test, but this evening I'll try and set it up to launch through rocketlauncher. I'm sure you just use the pc game emulator, and then point it to th exe in the game menu.
