  1. @Jason Carr So the upload is underway to Mega, but it's about 6GBs so it'll take a bit to finish; I split it into 100MB chunks. I have attached the results of the testing (this is also included with the videos). Out of 10 attempts (5 with VLC and 5 with WMP), I managed to get a crash 9 times. I exclusively used my SNES category since I am 100% sure every game has a video and MP3 associated with it. The issue that came up during the third WMP test has never occurred before, so that is a new one. I'll post back once the videos are ready for download.

Alright guys, another new beta is out. I'm still planning to proceed with the official release tomorrow morning, so any testing you can do between now and then would be much appreciated. I've spent most of the day fixing and trying to reproduce obscure bugs.

There are still a few outstanding bugs, but as far as I know, this release is more stable than 7.4, so it doesn't make sense to delay it. I will continue to focus on bugfixes initially after the 7.5 release.

@adu Unfortunately I haven't gotten through that issue yet, but it is on my short list so I'll tackle it soon.

@CTRL-ALT-DEFEAT I added quite a few more safety checks to help us debug your music lockup issue, so I'm hoping that you'll get an error message instead of a lockup if it happens again. If you're able to test between now and tomorrow morning, we may just be able to get the actual fix in before the official release. :)

Thanks all and happy testing. :)

I'll be home to start my testing in about 2hrs. I'm going to record the attempts and upload ones that error/crash to my Mega and I'll provide the link to it. Thanks for your concerted efforts!

@CTRL-ALT-DEFEAT I can't for the life of me reproduce those crashes. Can you test to see if you're still getting them if you switch to VLC? That would help clue me in to whether the problem is specific to WMP or not and would help in trying to hunt it down.

@Manuel Leiria Sadly I still can't reproduce that null reference error in LaunchBox either. Which video playback engine are you using in LaunchBox? Do you have auto-play videos enabled as well or just auto-play music?

@Jason Carr Definitely! I'll do some checking with VLC tonight when I get home from work. The crashing is very random for me and mostly seems to happen in any SNES category. Never crashes in Platform View and never in LB either. Anyway, I'll spend a few hours trying to get something to happen with it tonight!

  4. I managed to get Big Box to crash one other time after the last post in PC Enigine CD, but could not get to crash at all after that (even after opening and closing Big Box 4 more times). I scrolled through several platform categories (including the ones where BB typically crashes, like SNES), observed no crashes, closed Big Box, re-launched and scrolled through them again, spending no more than half a second on each game and it has not crashed anymore for me. Just before my last post, I managed to get 3 crashes in a row in the MSU-1 category almost immediately. I'll keep on scrolling and try to find a rhythm to it :)

@CTRL-ALT-DEFEAT Did you have background music enabled, or prioritize music over video audio? Background music is different, so I need to confirm.

Just the Prioritize Soundtrack over Video Audio. Attached are the Sound and Video settings I'm using. I don't use VLC because sound for the Platform videos won't play at all (I don't use MP3s for any platforms), but it still crashes in the Games View just the same (music plays fine if I keep the "Prioritize" disabled; just to note). In any case I tend to prefer WMP (I know!) since video seems to load up much quicker than with VLC anyway.

This may sound silly and uneducated, but is it possible that something else unrelated is causing the crashing? I ask because it seems that Big Box only crashes in a SNES category, so far. I have Super Nintendo, Super Famicom and MSU-1 platform categories (which is just SNES) and I get consistant crashes in all of them. MSU-1 only has about 5 games and it crashed on me 3 out of 3 times the last times I just tried it (still no error log). However, when I scrolled my Hacks & Fan-Made category (which is a mix of platforms with no default emulator set for it because of that), it never crashed; has about 35 games and I scrolled the list 3 times.

Maybe something weird with having a default emulator set? I don't recall ever getting a crash in my Windows or Amiga category either and they don't use default emulators either.... I'll have to keep testing that theory, unless it's too whimsical a thing to chase after... I know jack squat about coding anything :D

  6. Just had a crash scrolling through the SNES category (background music enabled), but only a generic Windows has stopped working message. On the latest beta.... BUT it is less crashy overall! I was just scrolling through the list at a slow enough pace for both the video and audio to kick in; took about 30 - 45 seconds of scrolling before it crashed.

  7. You can put videos anywhere you want, but LB won't automatically find them if you aren't keeping them in the default folders.

You could move LB itself to a different drive on the PC that has more space (but you'd have to fix paths for all of your emus, etc.), but if you don't mind manually updating the video paths, you can:

1). Move the videos to where you want them to live

    2) In LB, Edit the game, go to the Other tab and in the video field, click the button to navigate to where the video is.

Unfortunately, you can't bulk edit this (unless all your games use the exact same background video), but that is how you can do it. Same goes for music and manual files.

I have an idea that you might consider for a future update. While I was checking out the latest version of the theme, I noticed that box art in the recent games list kinda fades out on the right-hand side and it got me to thinking that it would be cool if it did the same on the left side too. I was imagining the box-art  being on a wheel and it already kinda has that 3Dish effect when you scroll through that list, but it would be pretty cool if that list were a 3D belt-type wheel. Attached an image for reference. Not sure it's reasonable or possible, but wanted to pass it along. And, once again, I love this theme :D

Well, this is my take on this:

Attract mode works fine because once it selects a game, it scrolls directly to it, and doesn't actually register the games it's passing by for loading data (which makes complete sense in terms of performance).

As noted, it seems that for a crash to occur you need to scroll two items: if you scroll to the second item while it's still trying to fetch the audio and video for the first item you'll probably get a crash.

My system also only has one song per game, I recorded the title songs for the games. I'd like to point out that I've never had this issue with movies only, but I have so with audio only, and this bug occurs to me in Launchbox as well as in Big Box.

My workaround to this is to edit the videos to carry the audio in them, since videos haven't ever given me grief, either with VLC or WMP.

I noticed encoding MP3s into the videos helped too... just a very time-consuming workaround. :) I've never had it crash in LB though, but that's a good idea for why Attract Mode doesn't cause any crashes. Hopefully it'll get fixed soon! :D

  10. Probably the particular view you are using in the theme. Every theme supports multiple view options for Platforms and Games. You can set a keyboard key or controller button to being able to switch the current viewing mode. Go into Options -> Controller Buttons and then map a button on your controller to "Switch View". If you prefer using a keyboard, just do the same thing under "Keyboard Mappings". I use the Options button on my PS4 controller for this. After that, go back to your Platform list and cycle through the options by pressing that button until you see one playing a background video.

I'm not sure if there's a bug with VLC causing crashes, to be honest. I've been testing my setup with some consistency, and from the crashes I've been having I'd actually say my problems have been caused by automatic soundtrack playback.

What happens is if I select a game and then quickly select another one just as the tune starts playing, LaunchBox or Big Box will crash, trying to access something that's not really there. Now, it might have to do with the audio codec or it might have to do with how LB starts audio playback, I'm not sure.

What I'll try is a workaround, to use only the audio provided in the demo videos, or to do that manually, and try to see if my issue persists.

Anyway, I'm not sure if the crashes talked about might be related to this, but in my personal case, it seems to be audio related. Unfortunately, the error doesn't provide me with a proper stack trace. @Jason Carr, do you intend to implement a logging system? I guess it could make troubleshooting easier.

I also get the crashing using Windows Media Player. The crashing has only been a thing for me since the ability to have background MP3s was implemented. I have noticed that if I don't transition from one game to the next too quickly and sit at each game a couple of seconds, it will generally not crash on me. The only way I can consistently prevent BB from crashing is to either turn off background videos and only have music or turn off music and only have videos; the back-end player doesn't really seem to matter and seems it will crash more often the more music and videos you have for a particular platform. Example: SNES has roughly 225 games and all games have videos/music and BB will crash almost 100% of the time while scrolling the list (sometimes as soon as I load into the list and try to even scroll to the next game below/above it). However, Wii has 30 games and videos for everything, but I have only added music for 5 games so far and BB never crashes when scrolling it's list. I have also never had a crash when letting BB run in Attract Mode (even for SNES), which seems really weird to me.

It's been pretty frustrating because I want to use both options. :(

I suppose I should also note that I'm not using full soundtracks or even multiple MP3s per game. Each game only gets one MP3 :).

  12. Hi All,

I use Mednafen (standalone) for PC Engine/TG-16 and Saturn games. For PC Engine and TG-16, it automatically save states when exiting the game and I don't want it to do this. Is there any way to disable that in Mednafen? It doesn't do it with Saturn games, so maybe it's a feature of the console (not sure; didn't have one growing up). Tried googling and looking on the Mednafen website, but couldn't find anything mentioning it.

  13. You have to track that manually in Launch Box (there isn't any place to tick that in Big Box yet). If you edit the game, there is a box to check that you completed it under where the game's version info would be. This make an icon show up in Big Box as well (next to the rating icon) in your Game Details view. I attached a couple screenshots, as well

So it will only work with Bsnes, but I think your BIOS are off. I see the file is 1kb, but it needs to be 256kb, and needs to be named "sgb.boot.rom". I also use this BIOS but the SGB2 rom, and it works fine.

Filename was the culprit: changed to sgb.boot.rom and it worked! Thanks!

The command line parameter is setup wrong. You want to load the core first then the path to the super gameboy rom. Here is mine.

    -L "cores\bsnes_accuracy_libretro.dll" "H:\Emulation\Roms\Super Nintendo\Super Game Boy 2 (Japan).sfc" --subsystem sgb

Must be more than one way to skin this cat; it was just the filename. :D

  15. Hello All,

I've decided to add Super Game Boy as a platform as an alternative to playing Game Boy games in Retroarch. I have followed Brad's tutorial on getting it setup, but I can't get it to work. The game I am using to test with is Metroid II and using the gambatte core, it boots up and plays fine as a standard GB game. However, trying to launch it (or any GB game) with the Super Game Boy, nothing at all happens. If I remove the --subsystem sgb, Retroarch boots to a black screen. I'm using the bsnes balanced core, but also tried it with the standard snes9x core, just to see.

My emulator config for this is attached. I have tried with both the Super Game Boy 2 and regular Super Game Boy ROMs (the boot image I was able to find (sgb_bios.bin) is for the original SGB and when I searched or one specific to the SGB 2, someone had dumped it, but would not host a ROM for it; only provided the code edits that would need to me made to the original SGB and checksums to verify with, but I've never compiled a ROM and no instructions were given for how to go about that, but the author did say there is a 1 byte difference between the regular and SGB 2 boot images). I did rename the file I found (256 bytes in size; no checksums were provided for it) to sgb_boot.rom and put it in the system folder in Retroarch, but no dice.

Does anyone know how to get this puppy working?

Great idea, and that area you outlined in yellow is the perfect size for 4:3 art. I agree the theme should support settings in LB/BB whenever possible. I'm almost certain I can implement your request. Working on a theme update this week and will include your idea. What if I blur the fanart or add tinting to tone it down a bit, so the game details will still be easy to read?

Yeah, definitely a light blur or darkening would be ideal. Also, I'm digging the inclusion of the white noise flicker when "turning the dial" between videos in this version. It's a cool touch for sure.

yeah, that's what i was thinking for the arcade platforms. Yeah, i like that 2nd TV. Better fits with the table theme for the rooms.  Is that a 70's tv or an 80's tv on the bottom?

It's probably early to mid 80s. Definitely needs to have a rabbit ear antenna :P

  18. I'm interested! If you decide to do any of the arcade systems, it would be cool if the tv were replaced with a close-up of the cabinet (with art that references the machine: Neo Geo, Tatio Type X, etc) with the background looking like an arcade from that machines era. This is really cool, either way though.

Oh, and if you do any Atari 2600, etc., for the tv, something like the attached would be awesome:
