About This File

Welcome to Vertigo. A simple, text based, vertical BigBox Theme with an old Retro CRT nostalgic feel.

There are 2 different downloads:

  1.  Vertigo.zip - This is the theme, please place this in your /Launchbox/Themes folder (you may need to right click the zip file, go to properties, and unblock the the contents of the file).
  2. Vertigo Startup Video.zip - A Vertical startup video (created by @harryoke)

Theme Features:

  • Designed for a 9:16 portrait aspect ratio display
  • Tested uses 1080x1920 resolution, however, it should scale gracefully as long as you keep the aspect ratio 9:16
  • The entire theme utilizes a centered text list (only possible with @eatkinola's AO Bigbox Customs Plugin)

Watch the video to see the theme in action. Try it out if you like it, and let me know what you think below.

CREDITS

  • @faeran - Creator of this theme.
  • @eatkinola - Utilization of his AO Bigbox Customs Plugin, along with his help and code examples. Without his work, this theme would not be possible.
  • @harryoke - Creator of the Vertigo logo and the Vertigo startup video.

Question about the theme -- I just noticed my marquee monitor is not displaying marquee's for platforms, platform categories and playlists.  But it works for individual games.  Is anyone else having this issue?

Thanks!

Is there a way to turn off the scanline effect?

should be easy enough, as it's just an image file.

Just delete or rename the following file:

Launchbox\Themes\Vertigo\Images\Theme\scanlines.png

Can someone please tell me whether individual arcade games show the actual marquee? From the youtube video and all screenshots I've seen, no games are selected, and therefore I don't know how arcade games are displayed once launched. I'm not interested in a vertical theme where launched games appear as it is when picking a game. Thanks!

I haven't had a chance to setup Launchbox yet, but I'm curious how this theme handles actual vertical orientation games. Every game in the video seems to be 4:3. What happens when you play a vertical orientation game (e.g. 3:4 or similar)?

Themes have no interaction with the actual games at all. That is handled by the actual emulator, if it even has those sort of options.

What @Inquisitor said is true. This is just a Big Box theme for selecting your game, and not an actual bezel for your emulators.

I'm not sure I understand. When I play a game with just an emulator and set it to output at the native game resolution (or 1x, 2x etc), different games will take up different amounts of the screen and have black bars on either the top/bottom or sides of the monitor, depending on the orientation, and the bars can be varying size, depending on the output. I would assume the theme has some "window" for the emulated game, or it assumes the game occupies a specific amount of space in the center, then adjusts the top and bottom accordingly. So are the top/bottom sections hard coded to specific resolutions, or do they adjust automatically based on the emulation output and the physical screen resolution? e.g. Does the theme just look for any open space at the top and bottom and use whatever it finds?

I think you are a little confused i'm afraid. What you see in the video/screenshots of this theme is a video of the gameplay of a game, not the actual game running in a emulator, its just a video preview of the game you are about to load.

Oh interesting. So the entire theme vanishes when you play the game?
Sorry for the confusion. I'm used to RetroPie / Emulation Station. I guess those themes work differently.

So now I'm curious how the theme changes (if at all) when the video preview isn't 4:3.
