LIGHTS OUT! BEZELS UPDATED TO THE NEWEST MAME CODE

Mr. RetroLust created a series of bezels which is a masterpiece :

Yet as he uses a rather old version of MAME, some of those bezels are not compatible with the latest releases which use a redesigned artwork system (MAME 0.226 onwards).

As I intend to continue to enjoy his creations in optimal conditions, I have undertaken to update all the lay files and to correct recent incompatibilities.

The original project uses a reflection and scratch layer to add a realistic effect which defines its style.

You will find here the complete arcade 4K widescreen collection updated to the most recent lay code and expanded in various ways.

Mainly based on the version 6.0 of its collection :

I’ve updated/edited all the lay files (but one*).

Renamed files in sync with latest MAME release (0.272 at the time of this writing).

Merged some archives to avoid any conflict with the classic artworks of Mr. Do and progetto-SNAPS.

Converted and integrated some of Mr. RetroLust's non-MAME specific arworks**.

Added some new artworks in the same style (Ex: Darius II Dual-Screen).

Replaced most of the screen overlays based on pics with lay-coded ones according to the latest MAME sources (ex : Circus).

Corrected some MAME artwork display known bugs (ex : Dead Eye).

Added toggleable gear shift for racing games when possible (ex : Pole Position).

Added optional custom enhancements (ex : Galaga).

Added color variations (ex : Barricade).

Added BIOS specific bezels (ex : Deco Cassette System).

Added generic horizontal and vertical bezels to use as fallback art files for every game missing individual artwork.

Included a folder INI file to display a list of all games of the collection.

If you spot a bug, or a game I forgot to add a gear shift, please indicate it in the comments, I will try to rectify it ASAP.

* : « Golly! Ghost! » cannot be updated efficiently, the one included here is the original version from Mr. RetroLust.

** : Converted for MAME and upscaled to 4K some artworks from HD Lights Out! Retroarch Bezels 8.5.

Converted for MAME  the Sammy Atomiswave 4K Lights Out! Realistic Bezels 1.0.0.

Converted for MAME the Sega Naomi 4K Lights Out! Realistic Retroarch Bezels 1.3.

It is essential to use the included horizontal.ini and vertical.ini files to make the generic fallback bezels work.

The vector.ini and the vector-mono.ini are highly recommended but not essential.
The raster.ini is only to be used if you use the D3D HLSL graphics mode.

I personally use BGFX for the rasters and the fantastic ArcCabView shader from Houb :

https://www.mediafire.com/file/71eylbzx8oom5ji/ArcCabView_MAME_BGFX_Chain_2.2d.7z/file

INSTALLATION

Easy way :

Unzip all LightsOutRevisited0-Z archives in MAME/ARTWORK/

Install updates one after the other, just unzip and replace all files when asked.

Put horizontal and vertical INIs in MAME/INI/PRESETS/

Advanced way :

Use the provided DAT to rebuild the collection with Clear MAME Pro.

Place the resulting ZIP files in MAME/ARTWORK/

Put horizontal and vertical INIs in MAME/INI/PRESETS/

Optional :

Put vector, vector-mono and raster INIs in MAME/INI/PRESETS/

Put Lights Out Bezels Revisited INI in MAME/FOLDERS/

Let's play !

All hails to Mr. RetroLust for the incredible work that he made with his original bezels.

Special thanks to the following people who directly or indirectly inspired and/or helped me with this project : AntoPISA, Houb, Layer0730, Mr. Do, numerous members from MAMEWorld, Starman99x, Vaughan and Widge-5.

After downloading and testing the release, if you enjoyed it, please come back and react by reviewing or liking the page.

It will take you just a few seconds and help me give visibility to this project.

Came here from Mr Retrolust's page. Very nice work! Surprised there aren't more comments here. One thing, what has been mentioned before - the reflections. Would it be possible to batch reduce the screen reflection & scratch amount? I know that you can edit them individually but I wondered if you might be able to do the set as a batch.

I've been using MAME in retroarch until now. Where would I install these? Or is it not possible?

Only MAME and derivative builds, not the butchered version that comes with RA.

Automatic batch graphic editing will give very bad results and would kill the magic of the reflections.

With a few rare exceptions, I mainly only update the code for lay files and do not want to touch Mr. Retrolust's tremendous graphic work.

If you've done it properly, now you must have numerous zip files in your main MAME "Artwork" folder.

Please check it, first is 3countb.zip, last is zzyzzyxx.zip. Everything should work.

Thx for sharing! The artwork of blood wolf(battlera.zip) with the ArcCabview shader doesn't display properly, only the right side shows the reflection effect. And outrunner missed the gear shifter as well. Pls feel free to check it out.😋

Should I use these files (which i have installed now), or use the ones from the original thread?
I just want new updates.

Thanks so much for bringing these up to date. Now with Dragon's Lair supported in 262 it would be amazing to get a realistic bezel that includes the LED scoreboards... Any chance of that?

Hey, for the zip containing the 5.4 version, do i replace all zips when asked and also what is the directory folder with the ini file in it ? do i need that ini file ?

The community can't thank you enough, now you have also made an update for newer MAME versions. I really have to try your Bezels, hoping they work with MAME v0.264.

I have a question and would be glad if you can help: What happens to games which don´t have a dedicated Bezel? Is a system bezel loaded then? That would be great. If not, is there a way to use the old bezels of the Bezel-Project that Launchbox already has saved in the MAME/artwork folder? So is there a way to combine your bezels and those of other projects? In conclusion, how do I set up such a mish-mash bezel system, as I learned to first delete all bezel artworks from an older project and merely than installing the new one.

Thank you so much for all your efforts and creativity and especially for sharing all this with us.
Cheers
Matthias

This is a most important question and should be answered ... I asked myself the same thing. Thank you in advance.

Hello, sorry for the late reply.

1) battlera : I can't reproduce this display bug. As I've tried with 3 different PC, I think it has something to do with your personal setup.

2) orunners : For now, as the gear shift is not referenced in MAME sources, it is not possible to display it on screen.

If you're using a recent relase of MAME, it's best to use this fork, which is more future-proof.

For the bezel, everything depends on Mr Retrolust.
But the LED display is technically feasible, I could code it into the lay file.
Please note that for LaserDisc games, the emulator of choice is https://github.com/DirtBagXon/hypseus-singe
Much more advanced than MAME.

Yeah, replace all the zips on each update.

The folder ini is completely accessory but allows you to display a list of all games with artwork.

1) For games which don´t have a dedicated bezel, if a system bezel exists, it will be loaded first. Otherwise, the generic horizontal and vertical bezels will be used as fallback artworks.

2) Editing your MAME ini file, you can select a multitude of different artworks folders. This is very practical, but it can lead to conflicts, and not all artworks may always be available.

Please note that this collection is already perfectly compatible with the classic artworks of Mr. Do.

Thank you for your kind comments :)

These look amazing. However, I followed your installation instructions and placed all of the artwork and ini files where specified, and no bezels are loading in MAME for me. I see the curvature of the screen and the scan lines, but no bezel or overlays, despite these being enabled in my mame.ini.

Any ideas?

Here, screen curvature and scanlines depend on your graphics plugin, not on the artworks.
Please copy/paste your mame ini afterwards, I'll check it.

If you take requests, I hope you can make a bezel for sagaia (aka Darius 2 dual screen).

Even the same darius2 artwork modified to fit dualscreen would do.

Mr. RetroLust is the artist, not me.
I just code the lay files according to the new standard and sometimes slightly modify his works to adapt 'em to it.
I did this thing quickly to answer your request, I hope it will do the trick.
Here it is in advance of the next update.

Very Cool, thanks for this.  I'm having trouble using the ArcCabView with these overlays though. For some reason I get wavy lines overlaid on the screen.  If I go into slider controls and change ArcCabView to something else, then switch back it fixes it, but doesn't save it.  Wavy lines return after restart. Works with OrionsAngel overlays, but not Mr. Retrolusts.

**Update** - found the issue in mame.ini     now it works great! Thanks again!

All you who wants less scratches and less glare. Just open up the game zip and extract the png file in there and edit it to be less reflective and erase some glares. Its not that hard. Time consuming if you need to do it for all games and their diffrent bezels. Oh well. At least you have the option!
