Oh I know everyone has their own personal preferences and I don't mean people are trying to make it look crappy. I just meant I see a lot people over on the Retroarch forums and other places using shaders to recreate that old 80s basement TV and RF connection look to recreate that memory. And that's fine if that's what the person wants. Some people even like to stretch the old 4:3 aspect ratio games out to fill a 16:9 and use smoothing shaders, not my taste at all but meh, not me playing it. Personally I love the middle ground of a CRT shader to recreate a PVM or high end consumer TV. To me that is what the art style of older pre 3D era games were designed for and it just feels right, and like I said 3D polygonal stuff looks best upscaled because polygons are suited for it unlike sprites. None of my old consoles are modded and I will never drop the cash on a Framemeister. I much prefer playing my games through an emulator. Things are gonna get really interesting with the new monitors coming out, all of the really good CRT shaders are not meant to be displayed on a 1080 resolution screen. Shaders like the CRT-Royale are meant for 1440 and up. My monitor is only 1080 and the CRT shaders look decent on it but I am very interested in seeing it on a higher res monitor. Even the hardcore CRT / PVM guys are saying the new low latency high resolution displays and shaders are going to be better than a proper CRT.

The latest version of Retroarch has per game configs now as long as the core supports it. No clue if the Lynx core does or not.

CRT shaders for 2D sprite based games and just straight upscaling for 3D polygonal games is the way to go for my tastes. I find it funny that you see real hardware enthusiasts trying to clean up their output signal as much as possible to the point that they are investing money into RGB modding their consoles and buying PVMs or upscalers like the Framemeister for modern TVs. And then you have the emulation people looking to recreate the crappy old with the terrible RF connection.

Indeed, it is good to see these 2 emulators seeing work being done and if you include the Yabause core for Retroarch it's kind of like 3 and more is always good. The new test version off SSF doesn't seem to offer much in the way of noticeable improvement but the GPU rendering option is nice. Like I said above, it allows me to run the Full Compatibility mode with zero slow down and that's always a good thing.
-
Looking at that screen shot it looks like a possible internal resolution / shader combo issue. Not sure if it is that though, I have noticed at times with certain shaders and the way they render being really screwy with internal resolution scaling.
-
Retroarch won me over initially with the shaders. Some standalone emus have decent shaders / shader like effects but Retroarchs shaders are far better and you can get a consistent look across all systems.

Hehe, I figured it was something stupid and simple. Glad you got it figured out.

I didn't have any gameboy color games at all so I grabbed a copy of Legend of Zelda: Links Awakening and Pokemon Yellow and tried it out and works perfectly for me using the official 1.3.2 build and gambatte core. I would be willing to bet it's something simple and silly like a wrong path or an extra letter somehow found its way into something some where it shouldn't be. Do you have 2 different installs of Retroarch and your Launchbox settings are pointing at the wrong version by chance ? I know I have found my own screw ups that way :)
-
Use the Chrome web browser and there should be an option to translate it, it seems to do a pretty good job of it. I would rather have some actual documentation for what all the settings do.

After some more tinkering I found that by using the No Bios setting in the Program 4 tab in Options all but 2 of my games load and play. The 2 games that don't seem to want to work for me is Soukyu Gurentai Otokuyo (it just black screens) and Cotton Boomerang (spits out a bunch of SH2 error stuff) One nice setting I found that is new to the test version is on the Program 1 tab of the Options and that is the option now for GPU Rendering. I found this to be quite a nice performance boost, I can now use the Full Compatability (very slow) setting in the EZ Setting tab and get no slow down at all. Edit: Ok just straight up mounting the bin file for Soukyu Gurentai Otokuyo using Virtual Clone Drive works in SSF when I set the CD drive to that virtual drive. But using my LaunchBox mounting bat file and Daemon Tools doesn't work, might be something wrong with my cue sheet.

Drybonz said Nice! I see Version 12 R4 at the top of the Japanese page... but isn't that the last version? Yes, that is the latest official version but there is a new test version which is the 3rd link on the page below where it says Ver0.12 beta R4. After some playing around with my small collection of around 15 games it seems that only a few of the ones I have actually work with the test version
-
So here I was thinking the Saturn emulator SSF was pretty much dead and done and along comes a new version. Granted it's a test release but still good to see it still being worked on. I have no clue what's new in the test version but I had a little mess around with it "feels" like it plays a little bit better with fewer graphical glitches. Granted I did only try out some Darius Gaiden and that game played fairly flawless before with a few extremely minor graphic flickers before and now those flickers don't exist at all. I really wish there was some documentation at all, let alone good documentation on it. Even if you translate the homepage of the developer it's all fairly meaningless info. Still no support of just straight loading disk images though, no idea if that is something planned or not ever intended. Link to news site about it. Link to actual homepage of SSF in Japanese. Google translate does a good job of translating it.

The PS4.5 or PS4k is real (and this pisses me off)
Lordmonkus replied to SentaiBrad's topic in Monkeys
Most game boxes had screen shots on the back of box back in the 80s, even the Atari 2600 had them. Only the really low budget game companies didn't put screen shots on the back. Game prices are starting to creep back up there. I'm noticing some of the newer games are 80$ Canadian, not as bad as it was back in the SNES days when Final Fantasy 3 was 105$ Canadian. What makes todays 80$ price tag so awful is that it's same price for the digital download and for that price they can cram it up their ass, I will wait for a Steam sale or just go buy a physical (if it exists). -

It all depends, a crash is possible because of too many systems in too short of a time frame, too many buggy, dlc laden games with pay to win structures. If the new consoles go full digital like some people are predicting that could turn a lot of people off as well. If it gets bad enough it will turn people off for a few years and 1 or 2 manufacturers could drop out of the game business. That doesn't mean games would go away, it just means a major down turn for the industry just like back in the 80s. The crash hit in like 82 and was back up and running with the NES in 85 but there were still games coming between then. We just saw a weeding out of the shit game makers and the Coleco and Intellivision. It certainly wouldn't be as bad of a crash because the PC market and the god awful mobile market would easily survive but seeing one or two of the big 3 console companies getting out would be a possibility. Microsoft could easily abandon the games industry and focus on the PC side of things because MS is like an ADD monkey at times. If Nintendos new NX fails as bad as the WiiU you could see them drop out. They just need to watch themselves, the games industry is already trying to milk the same cow over and over with season passes, cut up dlc and unfinished buggy games. Too much more and people will get turned off for a little while at least. -
The PS4.5 or PS4k is real (and this pisses me off)
Lordmonkus replied to SentaiBrad's topic in Monkeys
Oh I know Microsoft wants to do the same thing, there are desperate to catch up power wise. Sony, MS and Nintendo better watch themselves though. Market over saturation and customer confusion is what caused the video game crash in the early 80s. This could be leading the way for a 2nd video game crash, people do not buy consoles to be upgrading them every 3 - 4 years. -

Lordmonkus replied to SentaiBrad's topic in Monkeys
Yeah the 4K talk is pure bullshit, upscaling is not 4K no matter how much they claim it is. It definitely is gonna need this power for the Sony VR because it's gonna need to be running at an absolute minimum 60 fps and even then its very iffy. The Oculus Rift wants games running at 90 fps. I would be very skeptical about current games getting a texture and draw distance upgrade without a major patch since the games were not designed for that scalability, but running games at 1080 res and 60 fps will be very good. Texture upgrades would be possible but I wouldn't count on it considering upgrading textures would in turn murder the frame rate needed for VR if the current games are planning on running in the VR. It is very shitty of Sony to be making a PS 4.5 when people just invested in the PS 4. I am not a true console person at all, hell I just bought a PS3 last year that's how far behind the console curve I am nowadays. There was a time when I bought them day one, Saturn, Daytona and 2nd controller for 700$ Canadian. I am glad I held off on a PS 4 though, I do want one for Final Fantasy XV. -
This emulator is legit, and so is Austin. Having said that, it is early days for the emulator and still needs a lot of work. Games are gonna be glitchy and certain games are gonna run better than others. There is a big difference in one or two games running really well and running 100% and most games running well. Like Brad said about the Playstation 2 emulator, while it is really good it's an absolute mess of an emulator. Look at Super Nintendo emulation as an example. While it has been very good for a long time it's only recently that we got 100% emulation with bSnes / Higan. Some people are perfectly fine with zSnes but the honest truth it is a very bad emulator even though it runs really well on lower end systems and plays the popular games just fine. Don't get all hung up on emulators that are new and not really out yet for public consumption. Be patient and it will eventually come. The thing about emulators is this. It's not an easy thing to do, it takes the right person with the right skill set and knowledge and the desire to program them. We have seen some really great emulators come out in recent years that are very good at what they do and are developed quite quickly. Look at PPSSPP and Dolphin for example and while they are both excellent they both have a long ways to go to be considered close to perfect.

Well yours is definitely the right way to do it when it's for the entire platform. Otherwise my way would involve doing it for each game separately and that would be a pain in the ass. There is a difference in a way that works and the right way. Either way hopefully it gets the OP the desired outcome he was looking for.
-
Lol, I knew you would have the proper way of doing it :P Mine was just a quick dirty test way that I could find quickly.
-
Ahh, I think I understand now. All you really want is a different config to run for each platform. You would still use the same core but can have it run custom configs by using the "Use Custom Command-Line Parameters" option. Brad did a tutorial on this but the basic gist is create a cfg in retroarch and rename it to something else and then call that config using the custom command line option. I can't recall the exact command for it off the top of my head but I will post back if I find it unless Brad pokes his head in here before hand :) Edit: Ok as a quick test I went into my configs folder in Retroarch and made a copy of my mednafen_supergrafx_libretro.dll.cfg and renamed it to test.cfg. I then loaded up Ghouls N Ghosts and changed a my shader to something I would know immediately which config was loaded. Then for Ghouls N Ghosts I edited that rom and in the emulation tab I checked the"Use Custom Command-Line Parameter" and in the command line box I put in --config config\test.cfg I then loaded the game and it is using it's own shader different from other games using a different shader. I know I am talking about shaders but the same should apply to overlays. Set up one config for the overlay you want for your PC Engine stuff and rename that config to whatever you want. Then in your PC Engine platform emulator you should be able to tell it to load that custom config with the overlay you have set. I don't know if this is something easily bulk edited or not but I suppose you could just use the supergrafx core for Japan region games and the PCE Fast core for North American games. I hope this works for what you want, I don't use overlays personally.
-
Well in terms of the config and Retroarch core they will be identical since they are the same system. In my setup I just have them all in one platform so as a test I created the platform PC Engine and tried importing to that and like you said it just defaults to the TurboGrafx platform which is a bummer. The only real workaround I found quickly but unfortunately will be a little bit of work on your end is bulk edit your PC Engine games and change the platform to the PC Engine platform. You may need to just edit one game first and manually type in PC Engine in the platform field first. The quickest way to do it probably is to import all your PC Engine games first to the TG platform then bulk edit them over to PC Engine. Then import all your North American TurboGrafx games into the default platform. After doing this on some test games it did work for moving those games over to the PC Engine platform and like I said above the Retroacrh core and config are the same anyways unless you really wanna use separate cores and configs for whatever reason you have but it is easily edited.
-
Make a new platform called PC Engine and import the games for that platform. I also highly recommend using the supergrafx core for PC Engine games. It will let you play the handful of games for that system like Ghouls N Ghosts.

I learned a long time ago back in the Win 95 / 08 era that the only thing that should ever go on C: drive is windows and basic programs. Everything else should go on to a second hard drive or if you only have one physical drive a second partition is better than putting everything on to C: drive. When, not if but when you do have to format the drive for a Windows reinstall it is a huge time saver. You can easily use a program like EaseUS Partition Master to create partitions without the need to destroy your current C: drive installation and you can even re-merge partitions as well without data loss as long as they are the same file format. So just as an example you have a single 2 terabyte drive labeled as C: and you have 500 megs of total data on it and 1.5 gigs free you can use Partition Master to create a 1.25 gig partition as D: drive. You would now have your 750 meg C: drive and 1.25 gig D: drive. Then say somewhere down the line you wish to expand the 750 meg C: drive to 1 gig as long as you have the free space from the 1.25 gig D: you could take 250 megs off of D: and merge it in to C: making it 1 TB. Great tool for when you do need to use it and it is completely free, I highly recommend it. There are paid versions but for general use the free version will do what the vast majority of people need it to do.

Ori and The Blind Forest (this game is beautiful, IMHO)
Lordmonkus replied to CadetStimpy's topic in Games
As you can tell from the trailer it's an action platformer but it's also very much a metroidvania type game with some character building rpg elements to it. I have the PC version of the non definitive edition but I will probably get the definitive edition as well when it releases for PC. -
