MAME goes open source, but there's a catch...

So MAME just announced it's going full open source, after obtaining permission from all the developers involved in it. http://mamedev.org/?p=422 Which is good. But MAME also announced that any future "derivative builds" of MAME, i.e. MAMEUI, MAMEUIFX etc. will require THEIR authors to go through the same amount of work and get their version relicensed. http://mamedev.org/?p=423 Which is awful. In response, the author of MAMEUIFX has quit development permanently. http://mame32fx.altervista.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=288&sid=35bc383e6b203e9fe1f98d890a0ba85f Which is CATASTROPHIC. It was the best version of MAME, and now it's gone, just like that. This makes me really hopeful that we get a better Arcade database going in Launchbox, because I'm NOT just using standard MAME.

Yea we need to get a better scraper in for MAME, and this might be a big push for us to do so. We can utilize just regular MAME or a no nag MAME and market that you don't need the UI versions anymore. Though we're probably not going to go towards auditing or anything like that. I mean, never say never, but clrmamepro is already perfect.

I prefer the UI versions since it makes it easier to set things up how you want. I have all vertical games launch on my Vertical monitor and the horizontal games on my 50 inch Samsung. I wouldn't have a clue how to accomplish this with MAME but it is extremely easy to set up in MAMEUI

Oh no, I love MAMEUIFX…Cry But I agree that because of that we will need to get better MAME metadata support ASAP, so we can use LaunchBox as a suitable alternative. Like I mentioned several times before I think it’s finally time to get the Arcade-History database integrated. http://www.arcade-history.com/index.php?page=download It supports almost every arcade game ever made and includes the mandatory filename scheme which MAME uses. It also has a lot of trivia and extra Info’s for the games. And of course metadata scraping for other arcade emulators which require mandatory filenames like DEMUL would finally work with this database in LaunchBox too.
