thegreatiandi
I was wondering if its worth updating to a new version of MAME. I've been rocking the .143 version for some time now with a shaky Hyperspin build in my arcade cab. Now that im building a new one with Launchbox Bigbox, im wondering if there is any real reason to take on the tremendous undertaking of finding, downloading, weeding out bad roms, trying so desperately to get the CHD roms to work ( lol )....and perhaps...trying to find a No-intro set? Now i know i could go and read the update fixes on mame release notes...but i would rather hear from you guys as end users. Are there really many more changes in the new set that you notice? Are there enough new games that you feel updating made sense? Since I'm new to Launchbox, i do believe that LB uses MESS. I've always just used the MAME32 emulator...as i used Hyperspin to execute it. Will there be much difference in between the two? Are there any games that you notice run now, that perhaps didn't before? Thanks ahead of time guys!

There are some really good games that have been added recently like Akai Katana, also the shaders have been improved dramatically if that is something you care about and the Cave emulation has gotten a really nice boost in performance. 20 minutes ago, thegreatiandi said: Since I'm new to Launchbox, i do believe that LB uses MESS. Launchbox will use whatever you like but Mess has been rolled into Mame now, it's all in one. 21 minutes ago, thegreatiandi said: Now that im building a new one with Launchbox Bigbox, im wondering if there is any real reason to take on the tremendous undertaking of finding, downloading, weeding out bad roms, trying so desperately to get the CHD roms to work ( lol )....and perhaps...trying to find a No-intro set? Finding and downloading isn't so bad, you can get all the Mame stuff from pleasuredome without any share ratio requirement and No-Intro sets can be found on the internet archive. The sorting though will be some manual work if you don't want everything imported.
DOS76
Your 51 builds behind that's over 3 years worth of improvements your missing out on. I would say you should upgrade.

I would say you should upgrade. You are right on that. I checked the Mame site and .143 came out in June 2011. 7 years of improvement. I think it is worth the update. As @Lordmonkus said it is not hard anymore to find good sets. The site he mentioned is pretty easy to get an updated Mame set from. DOS76
shit if its that old it must be before they started doing monthly updates.
Replay
Instead of messing with No-Intro stuff, there's a HyperSpin cart systems pack with XMLs floating around as well.

I shall be checking for that one for sure. I have been trying to stay away from anything hyperspin related though....the front end...tue toxic forums, etc lol. I guess if it's room sets with matching xmls though... However... question: is the no-intro set stuff a pain or something ????

Is there anything that can assist with sorting ???? I know current build, there's tons of " non working ROMs " because there's over 5k...and I couldn't imagine going room to room. As far as the no-intro sets...do you see any issue with sets like that?? Thanks man!

Honestly...it's all because of hyperspin. Once I got it out NDA where I wanted it...I was so burnt out...I never wanted to have to touch it again if I didn't need to. I cannot really respond accurately on the sorting question as I never really use any sorters. Launchbox’s Mame import wizard is pretty good at weeding out the crap like fruit games, mahjong, casino, and so on. You can have it not import clones if you so choose. You can even have it create playlists for acade systems and separate out things like Cave, Irem Classics, Midway Classics, etc.. Now keep in mind it creates those playlists but those games will still also be under the main Arcade platform. I am sure @Lordmonkus or @DOS76 can speak more exact to this question. No-intro sets work fine in Launchbox. For Mame the recommended set is either split or nonmerged. Merged can cause issues so avoid it. I would love to avoid all of those weird adult card game Japanese titles, Mahjong, Etc. It's really just the non-working ROMs that are always such a bother. One other question though, what about the actual title of the game being selectable instead of the ROM name? Thatwas always something that I hated about my setup. Like Killer Instinct is in the system is something like kijnt... something like that. It would be cool to select killer instinct from a list, and it plays...just like the NES, SNES, etc.... systems do.
neil9000
If you leave all the checkboxes checked in the MAME importer it will automatically filter out all the crap like fruit and adult games, it should also not import non working games by default, although this list in Launchbox is a bit out of date so it will also skip a few that are now working, but you can add them manually after if you want. As for the naming, Launchbox will automatically use the real correct name for the games rather than the file names.
Lordmonkus
Here is a pic of the Mame import filter in Launchbox: Just using that default it will import approx 2800 games which is still a lot but better than the 10,000+ it would be if you imported every single file. Understood. I will have to revisit once my PC is finished. Question though...is it a matter of an updated xml file that could filter better and not leave so many out??? Lordmonkus
I believe Jason uses an internal database file based on the (i think 174 mame), it does need to be updated though and is planned to be done sometime soon.

Lordmonkus
Essentially they make clean dumps of roms with no extra junk like the old "cracker intros" that would get injected into pirated games back in the day.
