What is your favourite piece of video game box art❓

Recommended Posts

Hey Folks!

With LaunchBox being the crown jewel of our collections, box art is the unsung hero making our libraries look pristine. Hands up if you’ve spent way too long hunting for that perfect cover for an obscure game 🖐️ and maybe even thought, “I’ll just recreate it myself!” (Thank goodness for our Fan Box Art image category 🖌️)

So I pose a question to y'all:

What is your favourite piece of video game box art? 🖼️

We’d love to hear your top picks. It could be anything—one that holds a special nostalgic meaning, a timeless classic, or even one that’s “so bad it’s good” (looking at you, Bad Box Art Mega Man 👀)

For me, it's got to be the first Luigi's Mansion 👻

This iconic pose came to define the green plumber for the next decade. I remember thinking this was unlike any Nintendo game I’d ever seen before, and yes, I’ll admit I was definitely a bit scared to play this back in the day. But thank goodness I did!

At least “Game Over” Luigi from the Spaceworld 2000 demo didn’t make it onto the box… yikes! 😱

So what are some of your favourite video game boxes? Share them with us below!

Game on,
Andy

Really hold a special affection for all the Final Fantasy PSX and PS2 PAL box arts.

White background and logo/title, simple but effective. On top of being beautiful, the logo would give a hint on the game's main topic but still required a bit of knowledge/playthrough to get the meaning.

Some great choices! I had no idea Tomb Raider II came in that box shape, very cool.

And I totally agree with the Final Fantasy PAL boxes. There's something about the simplicity, yet each logo tells a story about that game's concept. And those covers look amazing next to each other in Big Box! 😁

All the box art done by Tom DuBois.

The man has made truely epic box art, primarily for konami regional releases outside Japan.

Hello guys !

For me, these are undoubtedly two monsters during the golden age of Japanese RPGs at SquareSoft:

XENOGEARS

I can't tell you how happy I was when I discovered the boxes (at the time, they were impossible to find in France,

you had to import them from the US!)
First little summer job, I was able to buy them! And with a French/English dictionary on my knees
and then they're two crazy Mistuda music OSTs!

The PSX modified to read US games and the intros ! Popopo ... Great memories!

And the CD boxes with instructions: they were clearly invitations to travel!

The imagination that we were going to experience something unique!

Come on, just for fun, some background :

Doesn't that make you want to go back? Me, yes. :)

Great picks! Awesome to hear you managed to find those back in the day, hope you still have them now 😁 (probably my biggest regret was selling my SNES boxed games as a kid 😭)

Yes, something about PS1-era box art is very nostalgic, a lot of the JRPGs went all out on very colourful artistic pieces that were instantly recognisable. Vagrant Story and FF Tactics are some other great ones in a similar artistic vein 🖼️

No, not at all like you, I sold everything without regret. After years of collecting, I needed money for a project and I completely detached myself from the physical and material side; I kept the best: the memories! And of course the nostalgia.

And that's the whole story of my life and my work today.😂

**For the anecdote, the development  team of the vagrant story  (the same ones who made ff12 years later) went to Saint Émillion, a small historic village in France, and was greatly inspired by all the local architecture for the level design (Saint Emillion is also incidentally a very great wine / lots of references in the game)

I love the old Mattel Intellivision covers, but I know that it is an emotional remembrance.

But if I think to the best one, it is very hard.

to break away from what you have shown, all wonderful covers, I put these:

Awesome - Videogame (Amiga) cover by Psygnosis : r/RetroFuturism

Roger Dean: Psygnosis game cover art, 1980s : r/scifi

Shanghai (1986) - MobyGames

ok, I am stopping myself...there are toons of covers that I love ❤

What a difficult question 😅

There are gazillion nice box arts, but interestingly the ones that stand out to me sometimes are the minimalist, like the Doom, Portal, Super Mario Bros. 3, Xenoblade Chronicles, and many others.

I love the work of Alfonso Azpiri, a Spanish illustrator that work with video game companies of the "Golden age of Spanish software" like Dinamic Software, Topo Soft or Opera Soft. They made games mostly for 8-bit computers (Spectrum, Amstrad, MSX, C64), and some for Atari ST, Amiga and DOS.

Some great covers already shared, so I'll give a few of my personal favorites.

Being an artist, some of these definitely helped shape me.
Some games have been making great artwork for their covers lately, but it is sadly not as prominent as it used to be, especially with the slow death of physical media
