  4. Beta 4 is out with the following changes: Improvement: This update replaced LaunchBox's legacy XML-based local game database with a high-performance SQLite database. Expect a noticeably faster startup time, lower memory usage, and a solid foundation for even more performance gains in upcoming releases Improvement: The included version of VLC has been updated to version 3.0.21, bringing performance improvements, bug fixes, and updated codec support Improvement: Platform Clear Logo and Icon for Bandai Super Vision 8000 is now included when importing this platform Fixed: The auto-import feature for Playstation Vita games using the Vita3k emulator is now working correctly Fixed: Resolved an error that occurred under specific conditions when using UNC paths Fixed: Badges and Star Rating graphics on the GameDetails view should now work as intended (introduced in beta 1) Fixed: Media Carousel alignment under certain conditions in specific custom themes Fixed: Included 3DO Interactive Multiplayer logo not showing up after platform import This is a huge under-the-hood change, maybe larger than anything we've had. The main change being the switch over from one giant XML file to an SQLite database for your local games database metadata. This file is used for many, many things throughout the app, including all imports, metadata, media downloads, the related games feature, and more. We could make all of this go super fast by loading the xml file into memory, but as the database grew the memory footprint naturally also grew. SQLite allows us to keep the majority of the speediness of the old method without the need to load it into memory. From a user perspective, as the changelog entry states, users will notice faster startup times and a lower memory footprint.

  5. Hi All, It's time for another beta round. 13.17 beta 1 is out with the following: Fixed: Game saves weren't always being detected on startup correctly We've also added some extra logging which should hopefully help us track down a few of the crash reports some people have been seeing related to the import games bug using the ROM Import wizard or drag/drop wizard, and the delete platform bug. It would be beneficial for a user experiencing either of those to update to this beta, turn on debug logging and get it to crash, then post your logs here. Beta 2: Fixed: Microsoft Xbox ISO files could fail to properly be identified using some import methods like the ROM Import Wizard Fixed: Resolved an issue that prevented game changes made in the Game Details view from being persisted to the database Fixed: Multiple null reference exceptions that could occur under certain conditions Fixed: Switching between Text List view to another view in Big Box would sometimes fail to load the correct information in the new view Beta 3: Improvement: Optimized the fetching of RetroAchievement hashes to reduce API calls and prevent user timeouts Improvement: Disable automatic ROM import for specific platforms in the Edit Platform window Improvement: Simplified plugin names for better clarity Fixed: Resolved some play time sync issues Fixed: Corrected region sorting errors when combining games Fixed: The RetroArch plugin no longer creates unnecessary save folders Beta 4: Improvement: Non-Steam Windows games now have the ability to scrape Steam media Fixed: Updating MAME using the Full Set Import wizard now accurately updates the emulator name and folder to match the imported version Fixed: The "Create Playlist" option in the quick filter now functions correctly when viewing "All" games on the sidebar Fixed: The BIOS window for RetroArch should no longer take Dolphin and PCSX2 cores into consideration Fixed: RetroAchievement scanning now correctly indicates whether achievements are available for a given game (introduced in beta 3) Fixed: The per-platform auto-import disable option now functions as intended (introduced in beta 3) Fixed: Navigation issues within the playlist section of Big Box have been addressed. This should resolve instances where game details were not updating correctly during navigation (introduced in beta 2) Thanks Everyone.

  6. Hey Everyone! Some of you eagle-eyed users might have noticed something new in the latest LaunchBox beta (13.16)—our Game Discovery Center now taps into special online lists curated by the LaunchBox team, bringing you fresh and seasonal game recommendations! Once 13.16 rolls out, over time you can expect to see new and exciting game lists in the Game Discovery Center, and we're even considering opening this up to the community in the future. But in the meantime, to kick things off we want to create a special playlist curated by YOU, the community! We will build a master playlist out of everyone's answers and have it appear inside the Game Discovery Center! All you have to answer is the following the following question: What are your top 5 favorite games of all time? There’s no right or wrong answer here— it could be games that you think have the best gameplay, were the most impactful, or simply hold a special nostalgic place in your heart. Our goal is to highlight the community’s favorite picks so that others can discover them too. To get started, here are my top picks, covering each of my favorite genres: • Sonic Adventure 2 Battle • Street Fighter IV • Mario Power Tennis • SSX3 • Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair Each of these games is instantly re-playable for me. Whether it’s starting a new save file on Sonic Adventure 2 Battle or Yooka-Laylee, aiming for those elusive platinum medals in SSX3 (still chasing that goal!), or reliving the great memories I had playing Street Fighter IV and Mario Power Tennis with friends, these games always bring me back for more. So, what are your top 5? Feel free to share your reasons too! Once we gather enough contributions, we’ll add them to the Game Discovery Center and update this post so you can keep an eye out for it. Can’t wait to see your picks! Happy Gaming, The LaunchBox Team Update! 🔥 As part of the LaunchBox 11th birthday celebration, this post just got a brand new prize draw added to it! 😱 Check out the details below: Steam Key Giveaway! 🎁 By participating in this event, you’ll have the chance to pick a prize from a pool of Steam keys! We know everyone has different gaming tastes, so we’re letting the winners choose a game that means the most to them. Here's a sneak peek at some of the keys up for grabs, we can't reveal all of them but rest assured a nice variety will be on offer, including some unreleased games! 😱 Rules ℹ️ How Can I Enter? Post in this thread sharing your top 5 games of all time. Please limit your entry to a single post. Does it matter if someone already submitted my game of choice? No, it doesn’t matter! Submitting the same game as someone else is perfectly fine, and we encourage it. How Will Winners Be Selected? Winners will be chosen at random from all unique posts at the end of the event. Can I Post More Than Once? You can chat on the topic, but only your game submission post counts as an entry. Please refrain from adding multiple game submissions as separate posts, as this WILL NOT increase your chances of winning. Event Duration The event runs until August 31, 2024, after which a winner will be chosen. How Will I Know If I’ve Won? The winner will be notified via direct message on the forum.

  7. Hi everyone, A new beta round has commenced! Thanks to everyone helping us test the latest beta builds! Your feedback is super valuable — please include the following info when reporting any issues: 📝 When submitting feedback, include: Your Windows version A clear description of the issue Whether the issue can be consistently reproduced The steps to reproduce it 🎮 How to Join the Beta To opt into the beta: In LaunchBox, go to Tools > Options > General > Updates Enable Update to Beta Releases When a beta is available, you'll be prompted at startup or can check manually via Menu > Help > Check for Updates 🔌 A Quick Note on Plugins Some beta builds include early versions of official plugins that aren’t yet live in the Plugin Manager. Because of this: You may see update prompts for plugins that are actually newer in the beta. Please avoid updating plugins while using a beta if you're planning to provide feedback — this helps us get accurate data and avoids breaking improvements. Beta 1: New Feature: LaunchBox can now auto-login to RetroAchievements for supported emulators like RetroArch, Dolphin, and PCSX2 New Feature: Added a quick-access RetroAchievements login and status option under Tools > Achievements New Feature: Supported emulators now have a RetroAchievements section with login options, hardcore toggle, and manual credential injection New Feature: Big Box now supports a Random Game action for keyboard and controller inputs to quickly jump to a random game New Feature: Added a new hybrid view in Big Box that combines platform and game views for smoother transitions and theming potential Improvement: Completed checkmark has been replaced with a customizable Progress field (e.g., In Progress, Beaten, Completed) Improvement: RetroAchievements now display detailed achievement types-Progress, Win Condition, and Missable-directly in both LaunchBox and Big Box default themes Improvement: RetroAchievements beaten status is now tracked and automatically updates the new Progress field Improvement: Videos are now properly centered again when using the WMP engine in Big Box Fixed: Improved WHDLoad parsing for Commodore Amiga game imports, fixing multi-version naming issues Fixed: Big Box transitions in platform views now animate in the correct direction consistently Fixed: Video transition animations in some Big Box default theme platform views were not triggering properly Fixed: Bulk editing date fields was not showing the correct value on the confirmation page Fixed: ScummVM Integration plugin updated to handle upstream changes that broke download functionality Fixed: Dolphin Integration plugin now correctly detects the latest version after changes to Dolphin's versioning system Fixed: MAME Import filtering logic no longer incorrectly marks some Music games as Non-Arcade, ensuring they're properly included during import Fixed: Game Details view text binding issue resolved, so "no achievements available" no longer shows incorrectly 🛠️ Beta 1: Features Still in Progress Beta 1 lays a lot of groundwork — but a few things are still evolving. When giving feedback, we’d love your take on how things work today, even if they’re not fully complete. Current WIP Areas: RetroAchievements: More features and polish are coming in future betas Hybrid View: Only one view is available now in the Default theme; expect more layouts, tweaks, and performance updates Progress Field: Early version — more statuses and integrations are on the way Beta 2: Improvement: The RetroAchievements options page will now prompt you if your credentials are incomplete or invalid when attempting to leave the page Improvement: Added support for importing VR compatibility data from Steam; Steam VR-supported games are now auto-tagged with a PC-VR controller in the VR Support category Fixed: Hybrid Views now load game items more efficiently than in Beta 1 Fixed: Custom Themes no longer falsely indicate that Hybrid Views are available Fixed: Horizontal wheels in Hybrid View now properly support the alpha-numeric index Fixed: Search and filter buttons on the alpha-numeric index now function correctly in Hybrid Views Fixed: Resolved a crash that could occur in Hybrid View when navigating with a controller Fixed: Game Completion data now migrates more reliably into the new Progress field Fixed: Opening List View no longer causes a crash Fixed: "no achievements available" no longer incorrectly shows on some LaunchBox theme's Game Details pane (for real this time) Fixed: Release Date field no longer stores time zone data, which could cause the date to shift based on user location Fixed: Rare crash that could occur when rapidly clicking the Favorite or Completed buttons under certain conditions Fixed: Game description could occasionally get stuck on a previous game instead of updating properly Things to keep in mind: For anyone that experienced the issue in beta 1 where your completed status didn't migrate properly to the new Progress field, you will need to close LB and open the settings file and change the HasMigratedToProgress setting to false. Then open LaunchBox back up and report back to us on how it went. The List View should be fixed, but if you are using a custom theme, an update to the theme will be required to see the new field as a column. The Big Box default theme only has Hybrid View 1 currently available. Expect more updates to the Hybrid View, including theming changes, extra views, and performance passes The new game Progress field will be undergoing a major revision that is slated to come in beta 3

  8. Neither I nor the project are dead. Anyone who says otherwise has no idea what they're talking about and does not speak for me. Work has not stopped since the last version. It has slowed at points because of significant IRL issues which I've neither the obligation nor the inclination to share because they're frankly no one's business but my own. What I can say is that, despite that, I've continued to work on it. The reason that the next version hasn't been released yet is a combination of those issues and, more significantly, that there are major changes/improvements that will be coming in the next version that require massive amounts of time to complete. There have been significant feature additions in the past like manual swapping that caused delays and the changes in this version require multiple times more work than that. It's a process, a tedious and time consuming one, but it's a process that needs to be done. Again and again and again and again and again and again... and eventually I'll come out of the hole, blink at the sun, and be done. But I'm not there yet. And I won't compromise the quality or standards of the project for anyone, just because they want it sooner. If that's too much to ask, that's unfortunately, as they say, tough shit. I don't report to or work for anyone. I have a vision that will be maintained. I have not dedicated years of my life to this project to either throw it away or let anyone else dictate how I should use my own skills and my own efforts and my own time. Gamebase64 has been around for 20+ years. CSDb.dk has been around for 30+ years. The library itself spans 40+ years because they're still being made and released to this day. I have to take all of that, gather it all in my arms, dump it in a pile, and turn it into something manageable, into something presentable, and into something usable, while maintaining the high standards that I hold myself to. And I have to do that, essentially, by myself. There are a number of very significant contributors in this space that this project would not be what it is were it not for their efforts - that cannot be overstated - and I am immensely grateful to those people. I try to name them by name - people like StatMat, sonninnos, the Ultimate Tape Archive team, everyone at GB64 and CSDb and more - and thank them as often as I can because I know firsthand the tedium and the effort that is required for these sorts of projects. But C64 Dreams, itself, is largely a one-man show. That can of course be a disadvantage at times because it means that it takes longer because 99.7% of the work is on my shoulders, but it also means that the end result is exactly what I want it to be. And people are, thankfully, generally pretty positive about that. Even people that have no idea what all work it actually entails (which is to say, essentially everyone), often one of the first things they say is "Wow... this must have been a lot of work." That would be an accurate assessment. I've worked on a number of emulation-related projects over the years that I've released to the public (C64 Dreams of course being the most significant of these) and, in every single case, they were endeavors that I undertook, ultimately, for myself - because I wanted things to be a certain way, because I wanted the experience to be better. But I decided hey, you know what, I'm putting in all this work for things that others might also appreciate, I might as well put this out into the wild. But the other part of that statement is the fact that I've also not released things publicly numerous times over the years for no other reason than just not wanting to deal with everything that entails. When I read comments like this, I feel completely justified in that decision. Not only is it not helpful in any way, not only does it actively undermine your own stated intent of seeing faster progress given the fact that it aggravates the one person that's actually putting in that work, but it also discourages anyone else that might consider for a moment whether or not they should publicly release projects like this. Why would anyone want to deal with that? Why would anyone see this kind of entitled attitude and say to themselves "Yeah, I want to use my time, my money, my mental energy, my sleep, my skills, and the cost of not using those things over the course of years of my life for myself, my family, and my friends... for this guy." When it's done, it'll be released. Until it is, it won't be. Period.

  10. For a long time I wanted a lite version of launchbox, a lighter version, a faster launch, but launchbox developers keep adding new features and making the program more cumbersome. When we look at similar systems, for example hyperspin, retrobat, batocera, coinops, it takes only 2 seconds to open. However, with i7 13700 processor, 32 gb DDR 5 ram, RTX 4070 graphics card and 4 tb m2 ssd, it still opens late. Due to the late opening of pictures and videos, I bought a 4 tb m2 ssd to run launchbox files fast besides 4 tb hdd. It has 5k read 4k write speed. This program urgently needs a version that opens faster and runs faster. There are no other features to improve or add. There are so many things that confuse us. I want to get in my game and play and get out.

  13. Locking this thread, as this specific release is out of beta and responses have been getting further off-topic to the testing of beta features and those talking points don't deserve to be lost in an outdated beta thread. In saying that, there are a few things I'll mention here. For things like user issues (like Sbaby), that might deserve a dedicated thread. For others with general performance type of comments. Thanks for those, although in order for them to actually be constructive, we'll need a lot more specifics. What we are going to try and do is create a thread dedicated to collecting specific performance related issues that a user may have. That thread will try and list out specifics to what users may be experiencing, then will categorize them into a few categories. Some might just boil down to education (like why boot times differ between versions), while others could be categorized into internal factors (things we can actually solve) vs. external factors (things the user can solve themselves... ie. a third party plugin causing slowdowns or crashes). If all goes well, we can work together to identify root issues and provide solutions, whether it be changes to the client itself or changes to a user's configuration. Look out for that, however, do know that there's only a couple of us on here, and we are splitting out time amongst many projects, so we thank you for your patience.

  17. Today we dropped some new video snaps for the Nintendo Switch. The set is now at 3,520 videos covering hopefully most of what people need. There is an almost unlimited amount of games (shovelware) for this system. I think the total is now somewhere north of 16,000 games in the library. So here is what we are asking, if you are still missing some videos for installed games or find an error, please let us know in the EmuMovies request section on the forums and we can prioritize those videos on the next round. Here is the list of whats available now. [File List] EmuMovies Nintendo Switch Video Snaps (EM 0.3).txt Videos are now available via EmuMovies Sync and on our FTP server in HD and HQ formats View the full article

  27. Version 13.19 - Released February 13th 2025 Release Summary Full Changelog: https://www.launchbox-app.com/about/changelog Improvements: Improved speed at which the Game Details View loads in LaunchBox This update replaced LaunchBox's legacy XML-based local game database with a high-performance SQLite database. Expect a noticeably faster startup time, lower memory usage, and a solid foundation for even more performance gains in upcoming releases LaunchBox has now been upgraded to .NET 9.0 (from .NET 6.0) The LaunchBox Game Details Default view now features Related Games in a dedicated, easily accessible section, for a more performant and user-friendly experience The ability to disable individual Related Games sections has been added in LaunchBox, accessible under Options > Visuals > Game Details The included version of VLC has been updated to version 3.0.21, bringing performance improvements, bug fixes, and updated codec support Fixed: The auto-import feature for Playstation Vita games using the Vita3k emulator is now working correctly Restored the expected behaviour for the top background image in the Default theme's Game Details view. It will now prioritize images from your Background image group before using a Gameplay Screenshot as a fallback Resolved an issue where image loading could be disrupted by multi-threaded gremlins Corrected an error introduced in version 13.18 where dragging and dropping non-ROM game files would incorrectly assign an unassigned emulator value Eliminated the unnecessary prompt to select a RetroArch core for platforms that have already been imported Restoring saves on an Additional App could inadvertently overwrite the save data of the primary game Resolved an error that occurred under specific conditions when using UNC paths Known Issues Getting Crashes on Loading If you’re experiencing crashes with an error when opening LaunchBox or Big Box, please check any third-party plugins you have installed. We’ve received multiple reports from users encountering issues with plugins that haven’t been properly updated for .NET 9.0. To troubleshoot, try temporarily removing all plugins from your LaunchBox\Plugins directory. The plugin causing the issue will likely be referenced in the error report. See this post for more details: Importing DOS Games Crashes There is a known issue when using the DOS importer wizard. Unfortunately, there is no workaround at this time, but it will be addressed in a future beta update. If needed, you can revert to version 13.18 by running the installer found in your LaunchBox\Updates folder. Flickering Issues on Dolphin If you’re experiencing flickering when launching games via Dolphin, try the following: 1. Go to Tools > Manage > Emulators, then select Dolphin. 2. Under the Details tab, find the option “Attempt to hide console window on startup/shutdown.” 3. Uncheck this option and try launching the game again. We’re currently investigating a known issue related to this setting, but unchecking the box should resolve the flickering. Vita3K Not Launching If Vita3K is not launching properly, follow the same steps as Dolphin: Go to Tools > Manage > Emulators, select Vita3K, and ensure that “Attempt to hide console window on startup/shutdown” is unchecked.

  30. Hi Folks, We’re thrilled to announce that our friends over at RetroAchievements have just added a major new console to their supported platforms. And it’s a big one… The Nintendo GameCube! For those not familiar, RetroAchievements is a service that lets you earn community-made achievements in retro games. We integrate their service directly into LaunchBox and BigBox, allowing you to filter, sort, and create playlists based on RA achievement data. You can learn more about this amazing service on their site —we highly recommend giving it a go. We want to congratulate everyone involved here for making this happen. It’s been a big undertaking and one that people have been eagerly awaiting. The RA team are even running a launch event during the first 4 months, allowing you to earn some shiny badges for your profile! If this is your first time diving into Nintendo’s purple lunchbox, or you’re looking for a reason to revisit the cube’s classic library, LaunchBox is the perfect companion for organizing your GameCube collection. Let’s look at a few things you can do to create the perfect nostalgic experience. Setup your RetroAchievements account in LaunchBox 🎖️ If this is your first foray into RetroAchievements, you'll need to sign up for a free account on their site. Then, in LaunchBox go to `Tools > Options > Integrations > RetroAchievements` and enter your credentials. This allows LaunchBox to see which of your games have existing achievement sets. Make sure Dolphin is up to date 🧰 Next, you'll need to download the latest dev build of Dolphin which contains the RetroAchievements integration. As Dolphin recently changed its release versioning, make sure you are on version 2407-68 or higher to access the achievements integration. Since this is currently a dev build, you won't be able to update to this version via LaunchBox, and instead will need to update via the Dolphin app. If you've never used Dolphin via LaunchBox before, it's as simple as dropping your games into your `LaunchBox/Games/Nintendo GameCube` directory. Upon playing your first game, LaunchBox will download and configure Dolphin for you. Don't forget to also log into your RetroAchievements account in the Dolphin emulator to start unlocking achievements. You can check out Dolphin's great guide to learn more about configuring the integration ⚠️ A few important notes on compatibility ⚠️ - At the time of writing, the RetroAchievement integration only works with the stand-alone version of Dolphin. The RetroArch core is not currently supported. - Likewise, the Android version of Dolphin currently doesn't support RetroAchievements yet. Scan your library for achievement data 🏅 With over 100 new sets released, we want to know which games in our LaunchBox library have achievement sets. To do this, we're going to run a scan of our library for achievement data by going to `Tools > Achievements > Scan for all games / current platform`. If your game uses a supported ROM file and you have badges enabled, you'll start seeing achievement badges next to currently supported GameCube games (how I've dreamt of this day). ⚠️ Note ⚠️ At the time of writing, LaunchBox will only correctly match the hash of your ROM file if it is a `.iso` file. Other popular formats such as `.rvz` will currently not match the hash correctly, but we are looking to address this in the future. "I never thought I'd see this day 🥹" Create some playlists 📂 Now that we know which games support achievements, why don't we create some playlists using that data? I'm going to create three playlists using the fields `Achievements > Supports`, `Achievements > Some Earned`, and `Achievements > Complete`. These will denote GameCube games that support achievements but that I haven't started, ones that are in progress, and ones I've completed (aka earned all achievements). As I get stuck into unlocking achievements, my games will automatically move between playlists depending on how many achievements I've unlocked. I wonder how many I'll get into the `Complete` category? Some of those sets are looking pretty gnarly 🫠 "Now, which one to start with... 🤔" Controller Support 🎮 LaunchBox automatically assigns supported controller types to your games, but did you know you can add additional controllers and build playlists based on them? We're going to use this to add the legendary DK Bongos as a controller type to LaunchBox! 1. Edit Metadata: Take a supported game, like Donkey Kong Jungle Beat (classic!). Edit its metadata and go to the `Controller Support` section. 2. Add New Controller: Click on the `Manage Game Controllers` option to add a new controller. 3. Add DK Bongos: I'm going to add DK Bongos and assign it the category "Rhythm". 4. Assign Controller: The final step is to assign this controller to any games that support it. Now I'm going to create a playlist and auto-populate it with any games that support the DK Bongos controller. Look at that, my games also have a lovely drum badge, since we set the controller type to "Rhythm"! Now I'm ready to annoy my neighbours by clapping my way to victory in Donkey Kong Jungle Beat (and earning achievements while doing it!) 🥳 Grab yourself a GameCube-inspired Big Box startup theme 🎞️ Now we're going all in on the nostalgia, why not deck out Big Box to look like an actual GameCube? If you've never checked out startup videos, we can make Big Box display a custom video when it boots up. Here's a fantastic example from one of our community members, @Kryptic, mimicking Big Box to look like the nostalgic GameCube boot animation. Take it one step further by adding a GameCube boot-up sequence 🎁 Speaking of the classic boot-up sequence, why not go all in and use the original GameCube BIOS to give the 100% authentic cube experience! Retro Game Corps has a fantastic guide explaining how you can set this up. Can you find the two hidden start-up sounds? 😉 Enhance those graphics by grabbing some texture packs 🖌️ We're not done yet! While GameCube games were originally 480p, we can upscale those to glorious 1080p and beyond. To compliment those gorgeous 3D graphics, we can use custom texture packs to enhance the visual detail and bring new life to classic games. The Dolphin Custom Texture Projects forum is a great place to grab some of these, but there are plenty of amazing recreations that can be found online. Check out Putachi's great guide on how to get these installed. So, what GameCube set will you tackle first? A huge congrats again to the RetroAchievements team for an absolutely monster rollout. With so many great games and sets to choose from (see the full list here) what will you be playing first? For me personally, the GameCube holds a lot of special memories. Being blown away by the graphics of Metroid Prime, the surprise of discovering secret characters in Super Smash Bros. Melee pre-internet, and the first (and last) time trusting a 3rd party memory card, only to find it spontaneously formatted all my saves! 😡 But I think for me, 20 years later I'm committed to finally beat F-Zero GX's story mode! These moments made the GameCube an unforgettable part of my gaming history. What are some of your favorite GameCube memories and what sets will you be tackling first? And will you be going for the RA Gold Tier badge? Let us know down below. Happy gaming! Andy "My body is ready!" 🙌

Switch Mode, Wiimotes, Guitar Hero, Taiko Drums, DJ Hero, Rock Band, 6 Button, Gamecube, Nintendo 64 controllers for their specific sections! 🔫 **Sinden Lightgun Section**: A unique script disables Sinden guns on a hardware level when not in use, ensuring no impact on other sections. 🎸 **Clone Hero**: Includes every Rockband and Guitar Hero song with synchronized videos for an authentic experience. 🖥️ **Updated Emulators**: All emulators are running the latest versions. 🏆 **RetroAchievements**: Configured for all supported games. 🎨 **Dynamic Game Art**: Game art updates dynamically as you scroll. 34. Can you believe it? LaunchBox is turning 11 years old this month! From humble beginnings to a thriving and passionate community, the team has grown from a single visionary to a collaborative team of over 10 people in various full-time and part-time capacities. Since this week is a time of celebration for us, we want to shine a light on some of the amazing folks who are helping to shape the future of LaunchBox and make it what it is today. While we won’t be able to feature everyone on the team, and there are also multiple contributors both within and outside the community, we hope these posts offer some insight into some of the people working behind the scenes at LaunchBox who you might not know. This will give you a glimpse into their roles and history with the project. We're kicking things off with Andy a.k.a @AstroBob Please introduce yourself and describe your role on the team I’m Andy, but you might know me as AstroBob on the forums. I recently joined the LaunchBox team as our new Community Manager. My job is to create engaging content for our awesome community, including events, articles, discussions, troubleshooting guides, and tutorials. I’m here to help you get the most out of LaunchBox! What is your history with LaunchBox? Having been a console gamer for most of my life, growing up on Sega and Nintendo consoles, I found myself wanting to preserve and consolidate my collection as digital storefronts began closing down. This journey led me to pick up my first gaming PC, with the goal of creating an all-in-one gaming machine. When researching the best frontend, I wanted something that treated my collection like a customizable database. I instantly fell in love with LaunchBox for its rich nostalgic media focus, along with powerful search, sort, and grouping features. It was exactly what I was looking for! A snapshot of my collection, highlighting my favourite game of all time! What advice would you give to new LaunchBox users? LaunchBox can be an incredibly powerful toolbox that lets you elevate your collection to new heights. That said, the amount of options can sometimes appear intimidating, but don’t let that overwhelm you—focus on creating a collection that works for you. While you can supercharge your setup with themes, media, running scripts and plugins, you can also keep it minimalistic and simple. Focus on what works for you, and you can always expand it later. What do you think is the most underrated LaunchBox feature? I’m a huge fan of the “Additional Apps” feature, which lets you track variations of games under a single entry. Whether it’s regional versions, fan translations, ROM hacks, or achievement subsets, it’s a fantastic way to keep your collection organized while enjoying different variations of the base game. Did you know each regional version of Donkey Konga for the GameCube has a completely different tracklist? What upcoming features or developments in LaunchBox are you most looking forward to? I absolutely love the recently released Game Discovery Center. It’s an awesome way to browse your collection when you’re stumped on what to play next. The team has implemented some amazing curations, highlighting games based on specific criteria. But I can tease that it’s about to get even better! Expect new categories and curated lists that will let you experience your collection in a whole new light. Stay tuned! The discovery centre is a great way to discover a hidden gem or that old classic! What’s your go-to gaming setup currently? Right now, I’m rocking a Lenovo Legion Go alongside a Razer Core X eGPU enclosure with an RTX 2080. It's nothing fancy, but it offers excellent portability and flexibility to play wherever I want, and when I need extra power, I can dock it with the eGPU for that extra juice. Big Box is also the perfect companion for viewing rich media on the Legion Go's glorious 8.8-inch screen. As someone regularly on the move, a portable gaming PC has worked wonders for me How do you envision the future of retro gaming? With the recent boom of PC handhelds, we’re entering an amazing new era of retro gaming. It’s now more accessible than ever to experience your entire childhood collection on a single device, all pre-configured for easy pick-up-and-play. From classic consoles to modern classics, PCs offer the best way to experience the games that matter to you. Couple that with a beautiful front-end like LaunchBox, and you have a collection that would make even Grandma envious! There’s no better time to dive into the world of retro games and rediscover your favourites 🎮 ❤️ Stay tuned for more "Meet The Team" posts coming throughout the week! 🎉

  35. Hi Everyone, Another beta round has started. Beta 1 has just been released with a number of major changes. The beginning of our new plugin manager has been introduced. At the moment this contains all of our emulator integrations, but will eventually be expanded out to include other categories of official and community based plugins. From a user's perspective, this will allow us to fix issues out of our control more quickly, as well as add content without the need for a full release. We've also overhauled our ScummVM integration to be more in-line with our other emulator integrations. You can now bulk import ScummVM games using our ROM Import Wizard, along with downloading and updating the latest versions of ScummVM. Beta 2 will include more improvements to this integration, but for what we have it's ready for testing. Full changelog can be found here: https://www.launchbox-app.com/about/changelog Beta 1: New Feature: This update introduces a new Plugin Manager, allowing for easier management and discovery of plugins for LaunchBox New Feature: LaunchBox is no longer bundled with ScummVM directly. Instead, it can be downloaded via the ROM Import Wizard or the Add Emulator Window, as well as updated/repaired via the Edit Emulator Window. This simplifies the installation process and ensures you have the latest version available New Feature: The process for importing your ScummVM titles has been streamlined through the ROM Import Wizard, allowing for bulk importing of ScummVM games Improvement: Several new command-line variables have been added for increased control over your emulatorsImprovement: Steam searching has been improved to fall back to a title search if the game ID isn't found in the LaunchBox database. This ensures a wider range of Steam games can be accurately identified Improvement: Steam scraping has been improved to better align certain values with corresponding LaunchBox fields. This provides a more consistent user experience when importing Steam games Improvement: Inactive database IDs associated with games will now be automatically cleared or replaced by the Download Metadata and Media wizard.
