  1. @CTRL-ALT-DEFEAT thanks again for the details on getting these working! I think I got the whole set working except for Mega Man 7, Chrono Trigger, and TMNT4. I simply can't find the required files for CT and Mega Man 7 and TMNT4 simply don't load... just a black screen. Do you have those working by chance? My plan is to do a media pack with all-new video snaps for these games, and maybe new themes while collecting the necessary box art, etc. I'd also like to use your platform video or at least mention it when I upload the media pack so folks are aware that it's available. Just got to get those last few games working. I may download the stand alone version of higan to do the video snaps... but I wanted to check with you first and see if you had these titles working in RA.

You can run MSU1 enhanced games in RA as long as you use one of the bsnes cores since it is the older, SNES-only version of what is now called Higan. Byuu, the author of bsnes/Higan, is also the author of the MSU-1 processor architecture, so as far as I'm aware, games patched for MSU-1 enhancement only work with his emulator (or in the case of RA, a core built on his emulator), so no SNES9X, etc. You can also run them on a real SNES with that SD2SNES flash cartridge.

I used to use standalone Higan, but I currently use the plain bsnes-accuracy core (never tried that mercury one since I don't know what is different about it) for all SNES games, including MSU-1. bsnes-balanced works too, but never use performance since I have a fast enough CPU for the accuracy one.

I'm having trouble getting any MSU-1 game to run using RA. do you point directly to the ROM or the .bml file in RA? Also, how are your ROMs named? do you have to change the name to match the ROM name in the .bml file? Can't figure this out...

  3. Yeah the Hyperspin update thing is well documented! That's not really a concern or turn off for me like so many others here. The lack of communication is frustrating and that's the appeal to LB for me. It's just nice to make use of people's (yours) hard work to benefit other people in the emulation quest.

Everything has its limitations (hell I use Android & Hyperspin so I'm mega limited) and I can work with that. imo I like something to be released as close to finished as possible with bigger gaps in updates. Anything that gives me constant updates just makes me think constant maintenance and fear of things breaking. Probably unfounded it's just the way my brain reacts to updates.

anyway look forward to more videos smile.png

Yeah, I totally get that! Updating all the time can become frustrating. I felt the same way when using GameEX back in the day, which is a superb FE. It's just every time I updated, I'd go back and find something in my setup to be broken and spend half the night on forums looking for a solution or work around. So I totally get it. Luckily, I haven't had those issues with LB and the update process is nice as it's built in to the software instead of having to update everything manually.

HyperSpin in a way, will always be my first love and I still have a working setup. Although, it's badly outdated and probably in need of a lot of tweaking on my end. In fact, it's so outdated that it doesn't even have RL integrated! Just plan old HS. I've been meaning to update it for a long time but when I think of all the work that would be involved, I get lazy and go mess around with LB :P

But yes, having something that's pretty stable and reliable without updating every day is certainly nice! It means more time playing games and loading new media and less tweaking and figuring out how to get things working again.

Thanks for the reply, the couple I tested didn't look to bad stretched but my screen is only 37". Probably looks bad on bigger TV's

i can probably fit them into a bezel or something easily but I won't get round to that for a long time!

I doubt they will get the 16x9 conversion there's not much of that happening now.

HyperSpin in all honesty is in severe need of an overhaul/update. One of the reasons I switched to LB was the lack of updates and limitations of HS. Not trying to sound harsh here, simply stating the obvious. After converting many of my themes to 16:9, I finally threw in the towel and moved on. If these video themes are working better for you then the traditional HS themes, I say stick with those. I just completed the NES set and those should be coming shortly. I plan on doing all the consoles as I've said before so rest assure that more is on the way :)

  5. Well the test worked out fairly well in full screen,

These are def a contender for my Android setup could work better than using Hyperspin themes because of swf issues in Android.

The purists I guess wont like the 4x3 being used as 16x9 unless im still confused, they look good to me.

the game text may look a bit odd for some and I have to forego the box/cart art unless I convert them to being in a large box allowing for that

    heres an example

Yes, 4:3 is the correct aspect ratio and that's how I recorded them. 16:9 stretches the image quite a lot but there are those people that don't mind the stretched look. In order for proper 16:9 versions to be made, the themes and all the artwork contained in them would need to be resized and reassembled. Myself and@CriticalCid aren't making any such modifications. We're simply recording them in the original 4:3 ratio in which they were made. If 16:9 versions of these themes were ever to be made in the future, I'd be more then happy to record them.

  6. They are but I have a few more to add still, I'm going to be knocking out my to do lists for Rif and Cid tomorrow hopefully.

NES themes are done as well. I haven't uploaded them to my folder yet though, was trying to give you a little time to catch up with everything. I should have them uploaded this weekend or early next week. N64 and Sega Genesis are on deck now and I should have the Genesis themes done this week as well as there are very few for that platform. N64 may take me a little longer but will be following soon as well as 32X, Sega CD and others. I plan on doing every console and handheld I can find themes for and possibly Windows PC if no one wants to claim it :) Thanks for the update@Circo

  7. @Riffman81 You will likely have to reimport, yes; though you should be able to keep all your existing images and media. We might build a tool to migrate games but that probably won't be there for v1. Also, for v1 we won't be handling the case where names are different, but hopefully we can add that in going forward.

Can't say that's news I wanted to hear. Re-importing 54+ systems and platforms seems a little extreme honestly when this feature seems to apply mainly to those that use full ROM sets with duplicates and multiple regions. I realize others may have many more platforms setup and have their LB running the way they want so seems like a hassle. Not trying to sound harsh just making a point. So in terms of folder structure in the LaunchBox games folder, will that be changing at all? It sounds like that essentially we'll be rebuilding our setups with regards to how games are imported, stored, and managed. What I'm asking is will LB be moving things around once this is implemented from how things are now? Like putting different region games in their own folder separate from other regions? Will the images folder and other media be affected by this?

  8. I'd be more than happy to put some stuff together. Being new at this, the more practice the better. I still have the original video, so I may re-upload that so there are a couple of options. Just figured since they are made from the same composition, I'd just have one, but maybe the other one would be preferable to some.

I've got an idea kicking around in my head for an MSU-1 theme video (I have a platform category for those) that I'm going to start work on, too. I am also going to do a theme for Super Gameboy and then move on to game-specific themes for Amiga and MSX.

I think I'll start new threads for each platform I start making the game themes for and open them up to requests since I cherry pick all of the games I have for any platform, so I never have every single everything that is available on them.

Definitely upload the stuff you've got and any creative suggestions you might have for them too!

Sure thing! Just remembered that unfortunately I'm pulling a double shift tomorrow at work :( but I will post when I can and we can toss around ideas. Speaking of MSU-1 games. Does Retroarch have support for those? I haven't got any of those yet but I'm definitely interested in getting a collection going as both Zelda ALTTP and Mega Man X have MSU-1 versions available now. Just wondering what the best emu is for playing those?

  9. I'm planning to group anything that has the same game title into the same game, but it will be optional. For v1, we're gonna look at file names, and if they match sans for the extras, they will be grouped.

I'm an old HyperSpin user and when I made the switch to LB, I basically just migrated everything over. My ROM sets are HyperList sets and primarily use USA and Europe regions with no dupes. Basically, they're 1:1 sets meaning 1 ROM per 1 game. My question is, will I have to re-import my ROM sets upon this feature being added? I like keeping these sets all together each in separate folders based on platform. When I import new ROMs I usually go back and bulk edit all my games and leave the region field blank as I have no need for the separate region folders LB creates in the images folder. I do this for several reasons, mainly because LB displays the ROM name and the region tag on the file name tells me what region the ROM is (USA) (Europe) etc. and because I usually cut out all the Japanese games unless they're exclusive or have been translated. Also, some ROMs from different regions are titled differently, like Castlevania Dracula X is actually Castlevania Vampire's kiss in Europe and Akumajou Dracula X in Japan. Mega Man is Rockman, etc. Is there some database LB will look to when grouping games like these together?

  10. I did a re-do on the video theme. Ver. 2.0 is here:

I really liked the first one but it never hurts to have alternates :)

I have my hacks and fan games separated by platform (SNES, NES, etc) I don't suppose you'd be interested in doing some for individual platforms would you? If so, I have some custom logos I made for this very purpose. I can always do more as well if you don't like those. I'll post them in my thread tomorrow for you to checkout and for anyone wanting to use them.

  11. The SNES themes have officially made their way to the EmuMovies FTP @Jason Carr You can find them in the Video Themes (HD) folder and also a standard set has been made as well in the Video Themes (HQ) folder. I want to point out that Circo accidentally deleted an update folder I had on the FTP with additional video themes so there will be about 30-40 more coming, I just have to upload them for processing. For now though 153 recorded HyperSpin SNES themes await! Enjoy everyone and check back as I plan on adding even more themes in the future! :)

  12. So I'm currently on a very old and out dated MAME ROM set and I'm looking to finally update to the latest. My internet speed isn't the greatest where I live so downloading a full complete set would take ages for me. So recently, I've been exploring my options. One of those options is to order a full set from MAME DVD's. However, the guy who makes these sets uses a merged set and I'm not sure how that will work with LaunchBox. Anyone here using a merged set and if so? Mind telling me what steps are needed to import the set in to LB?

My next option is to just visit the dome of pleasure and try to compile a 'best of' or 'greatest hits' set based on various Top MAME Games lists found on the net. I kind of prefer this route for the simple reason I could do away with a lot of clutter and games that I'll never touch. So what's the best way to go about this using the latest MAME set? Are there any 'best of' sets out there already compiled? I'm not terribly picky about the version of MAME, of course I'd like to use the latest but I'll take anything from the last few years or so if a set like this is floating around out there. I'm not asking for ROMs by any means, just wondering if there is something pre-made or what the best method would be to go about making my own.

  13. I'm not sure unfortunately. However, I downloaded a nightly build and scrapped everything except my custom configs, did a clean install of RA and updated cores etc. placed my configs back in the proper folder, pointed LB to the new .exe and now everything is back to normal... makes no sense to me as I've been updating RA the way you said to in the tutorial for a long time now, never had any issues until now. Wish I could shed some more light on the issue I was having but truthfully, I have no clue what happened. Maybe I didn't copy something correctly or missed something? It was 3AM so... :P

Anyway, all is back to normal, thanks for the help@SentaiBrad

  14. If you're using custom configs you should be using the -C command in the associated platforms tab. Did you not have these previously? Also, updating from the online updater doesn't fully update RetroArch. I tested it out a while ago (so they could have changed that), and the exe's never get updated, so you'll also need to grab those from the site (or the full download again like I usually do). So for GBA as an example, this is my associated platform line: "-L "cores\mgba_libretro.dll" -c "config\mgba_libretro.cfg"".

Also yea, backspace and enter happened a while ago in the nightlies, and I came across it in the middle of a tutorial (like usual xD). I think they did it because it makes more sense? As for a change log though, I have no clue if they keep one.

My command lines look exactly like yours and yes I've always used -C command in the associated platforms tab. I didn't update RetroArch from the online updater (just cores, etc), I did a fresh install and even double checked with your "Updating RetroArch" tutorial video just to make sure I did things correctly. Ultimately I reverted back to my previous RA 1.3.6 install until I can figure out what's changed in RA that's causing the issue. It's seems to just ignore my custom config files all together. Platforms that don't use a custom config seem to work properly. I'll double check this when I get home from work tonight.

  15. So I noticed the new version of RA had been released and since I had some time, I decided to go ahead and update. Upon completing the update and after updating assets, cores, etc through RA. I went to launch a SNES game through LB and noticed the overlay I normally use was gone. RetroArch seems to be launching games and using the retroarch.cfg, and not my custom configs as I have set in LB? It's doing this for a number of systems and for the life of me I can't figure out why... Is there something I need to set before running a game in LB for RA to use my custom configs? I'd hate to have to go through each system again and reconfigure each one just to use the updated RA. Also, the default KB settings have changed in RA. You now use the Enter and Backspace keys to make selections in the RA menu... where can I find a change log or something explaining everything that has been changed in this new version of RetroArch? Tried the forums but nothing...

  16. I'm using MAME in RetroArch by using the Mame2003 core. As @lordmonkus said, the cores with the dates are based off older versions of MAME and require a specific ROM set in order to use them to their full potential:

    - Mame2000 will work best with the 0.37b5 ROM set (this ROM set is considered to be the "breakthrough" set for RetroPie builds, and emulating arcade games on mobile devices and Android TV boxes. It contains no CHD games ans has a fairly high compatibility rate).

    - Mame2003 will work best with the 0,78 ROM set

    - Mame2010 will work best with the 1.39 ROM set

and the core with no year attached to its name uses 1.54 or 1.59 I believe for best compatibility. I can't remember for sure which ROM set but it's one of the two. As I said, I have the Mame2003 core working pretty nicely with the 0.78 ROM set for which it was built, using newer ROM sets is hit or miss with compatibility. If using a newer set, it's best to use standalone MAME (try to find the version of your ROM set if your not sure and use that version of MAME for best emulation results). The 0.78 set with the Mame2003 core works pretty nicely for my needs but is an older set based on an old and outdated version of Mame, so keep that in mind and if you're looking for the latest and greatest, Mame standalone is the way to go :)

I really like the Zelda Mystery of Solarus  pack that you did with the video theme, boxart and such...great job!

Thanks! More on the way as promised :) Just taking a small break trying to finish the recorded HyperSpin themes up and get those out for everyone.

EDIT: BTW, this was just brought to my attention... It's still in development but the current build is fully playable and actually a neat twist on Mega Man 7 in terms of story. I will get to art for this and such after I finish SORR and a few others.

  18. I'm glad your going to be updating the 1st post @Riffman81 as its always nice to see what's been done and what's coming up next, plus its nice to see what other people are playing too which helps expand my collection [emoji4]

really looking forward to getting my hands on your NES recorded themes, keep up the great work as always my friend, I will try and help contribute games and media where I can to this thread [emoji6]

NES themes are almost done! I would've been done already but I keep finding new themes on the HyperSpin forums and in other places that weren't in the download section. So we'll have a pretty nice collection of NES themes soon! I've also been throwing in my own themes for games that didn't have anything so making those takes even more time but I'll be sure to post and let you know when those are on the FTP.
