How large is everyone's LaunchBox directory?

Hi,

Just wondering how big everyone's Lauchbox directory is(excluding roms!).

Reason I'm asking is because I'm in the process of building a computer inside an original Xbox case, and don't have a lot of space for extra storage, so I thought I'd get an M.2 SSD big enough for LaunchBox.

Thanks

That is going to be such a tough thing to judge by others collections.

Essentially if you stick to cartridge based consoles that won't take up much drive space but once you start getting into the cd / dvd based systems the space requirements will balloon in size in a hurry if you are going for large collections.

Mame will also take up a good chunk of space unless you take the time to pull out only the games and their required files to work. A full split set minus the CHD files will run approx 55-60 GBs.

Oh, my bad. I meant excluding roms.

I have an 8TB Drive with all my roms and iso's on, just wondering how much Lasunchbox itself takes up with all the media.

Thanks

Ahh, well that makes a big difference.

Mine is 50 GBs and all my roms and emulators are outside of my Launchbox folder so that only contains artwork and video files.

Also for reference my collection is just over 10,000 games and I don't have video files for every game and system.

I wouldn't bother putting LaunchBox on an SSD honestly. You're not gonna see gigantic enough speed increases for the high cost per GB. I'm working on getting an M.2 as well, but I'm saving that for games like Fallout 4, Skyrim, Witcher 3 and Xcom 2; games that require fast loading. I have my install on my 8TB drive along with everything else and it runs just fine.

My LB install is 152GB.

It being an SSD or an M.2 is still irrelevant to performance increases with LaunchBox. Even more so, the M.2 is more expensive per GB, and more precious (unless you're rich). You'll see basic performance increases, sure. Seek times are naturally faster, read and write speeds are faster, but from the last I looked at the Performance monitor with LaunchBox and Big Box, it wasn't using anywhere near my full 8TB 5400RPM capabilities, so it would be even further from an SSD's max. It might boot up slightly faster, but any performance gain will be minimal. If you had the choice to upgrade a CPU or to an SSD, for LaunchBox performance, it would be the CPU hands down. CPU, GPU, RAM and then hard drive, unless the drive was failing, extremely old or using an outdated interface like IDE or SATA 1/2.

The point is he's building a PC in an old Xbox case. Space is a major issue and an M.2 drive since it sits flush with the motherboard and has no cables at all will save a not inconsiderable amount of space if you also take into account the power and sata cables a normal HDD would need. He's not doing it for performance reasons.

I somehow missed that part, whoops. I read that he had an 8TB drive though, which it looks like to still be used on this build. I've seen the question enough that I thought it was performance related because I missed the OG Xbox case part. xD Sorry about that. If everything is already set up on the 8TB though, then you don't need to worry about moving everything. If it's been setup on another computer, just plugging the drive in will work right away. When everything is kept on the same drive, it uses relative paths.

Im wondering the same thing right now....need to start getting a proper setup going. All my stuff is all over the place. Im wondering how big will the media state of things be in a big setup.

I might try and figure out what size the media would be per game. Then add in the basic per platform size of a, theme etc

I'm currently at 152GB, but I know for a fact I am missing a lot of the newer videos and images. I also performed the enhanced image clean up as well, which removed a crap ton of duplicates. I'm just shy of 36k entries.

Edit: This is the entire LB folder, including the cache, some themes and Big Box start up video.

Hey guys,

Thanks for getting back to me, yeah, space is at a premium since the original Xbox isn't as big as I thought it would be, I'll be sure to add some pictures later, when I have more done to it.

Don't see why you couldn't fit all that in :)
