I don't ever remember using that website, but I've been turning off services, start up programs and background behavior for at least 7 or 8 years. XP, 7, 8 and now 10. I've gotten a bit more lax on some of the requirements as I am doing more than ever on PC's and need that stuff running, but I also have a beast PC, and even then im turning extra stuff off all the time. Between that, Driver Booster (out of date drivers can cause a whole hell of a lot of hardships, and there are driver updates for things you never knew existed on your PC) and Advanced System Care with it's various clean up routines make the world of difference on PC's. I've used them on clients PC's and they generally solve a lot of different issues. I had Jason use DriverBooster once and he was surprised at the list that needed updating, and I recall him saying it also solved a different problem he was having. http://www.iobit.com/en/driver-booster.php http://www.iobit.com/en/advancedsystemcarefree.php I would urge someone to pay for a license if it really does start to work, because I think they do a fantastic job, but there are ways to 'test' the full versions if you really want to see what it's like at full.

Nice. I also just realized I was a beta behind somehow, and I've opened up LaunchBox three separate times earlier today.

After a period of time, if not right away, things will get removed from RAM to make way for other programs. Once LaunchBox is closed, everything residing in RAM should be gone.

Do you need to re-run the command after you've cached new items?

If I recall too (and Jason may need to clarify a bit on this) but we do also use some of the advances in the Operating System, that are present in Windows 10. So inherently, 10 is faster than 8 which is faster than 7. I have a giant library as well, and you can see how my LaunchBox install interacts on the Tutorial videos. If you would like, I can make a video going through a list of steps if you would like, but my LaunchBox install isn't overly laggy. Like I said, we did tons and tons of testing, and once a users library gets over 5k, it instantly starts to slow down and use more resources. This though has actually gotten a lot better over time. Jason has made speed improvements over the last year that would make LB from that point in time pale in comparison. I would assume roughly every 5k is a bit of an up tick in computer usage though. Some features are more demanding than others, so I would also check a few things: Disable controller support in the LaunchBox options menu all together, disable movie and music auto-play, if you have LaunchBox showing you how many games you have per platform in the side right bar then turn that off, and make sure you RAM Cache is at an appropriate level for your PC. I have 32GB of ram and mine is set to 4GB. My LB install is over 100GB, with my cache folder holding 27,522 files at 2.91GB (some of these are for BigBox as well). It's on an internal SATA3 8TB Western Digital HDD.

No, you're fine. I only ever got my BIOS from a MAME Rom pack. It's really hard to know if the BIOS you are grabbing matches up nicely with the version of MESS/MAME you are using if they're not marked appropriately.

Yea, the bios only need to go in to the roms folder, no sub folder after that.

A random thought I had: What if LaunchBox is writing the cache files to a bad sector on the hard drive? Maybe the hard drive is dying and it's having a hard to accessing the cache.

Yes. I know you can mix and match commands as I had to do with Super Game Boy and the Bsnes Core, it's just that the order of operations needs to be correct.

I wonder if you put them in a location you wanted and used the a5200 and -cart commands after the -L command if it would work.

Did you not need to specify a5200 -cart? I knew the software rom pack was the key (mostly for the very specific and stupid naming convention), but I never actually bothered.

Yea, what Monkus said. PSP, Dreamcast, Arcade and MESS I would use standalones for. Everything else is great in RetroArch. Most of the tutorials on our channel deal with RetroArch in fact. It's one of the best emulators, I think. If you want a down to basics RetroArch tutorial watch the SNES one:

Just another reason why we need to change the default emulator list and the default command line parameters that we auto-populate: The MESS lines in RetroArch are missing the very key a5200 -cart command line portions that tell MESS what system to load and what file extension to look for.

The easiest method is just grabbing a software rom pack torrent, downloading only the "a5200" folder, dropping it in the proper location and trying that way. However, we only internalize MAME names, not the Software portion, so it wont work well. This is why the tutorial I did for MESS used a standalone version. You tell MESS where your MAME Roms folder is (if you download a MAME Rom pack it has all the BIOS you need, even for the consoles), then import your games and assign it MESS like a normal emulator, with the proper command line arguments. @reignstumble If you have any questions concerning the tutorial, I am more than happy to answer them for you.

Also, now that I think about it, knowing the way MAME works you'd need to get the special MESS/MAME Software lists for it to work, because MESS in RetroArch takes away a few customization options that is needed in MESS if you don't use software lists. Edit: just saw your second post Monkus, yea essentially you need the software rom package, then it functions just like MAME. However, that is a royal pain in the ass.

I would use standalone MESS or MAME for that instead. The MESS core functions, and is doable, but it takes a few more steps. Honestly, it's probably the exact same steps, except that it just needs to be plugged in to different locations.

It can easily be one of 3 things or any combination: the associated platform line is wrong, you didn't download the core in RetroArch that you are trying to use, or you are missing the proper BIOS files. What is it exactly that you are trying to emulate? Did you follow any of our tutorials? Edit: the screenshot is nice, but what system are you trying to emulate?
