  1. Yea, that's pretty much what I do. I edit the roms folder to look at MAME, then import my games in to LaunchBox like any other system (not specific MESS Rom sets).
  2. With everything I've set up, including RetroArch, MESS and a few standalone emulators, everything supports my PS4 controller natively. It especially shines in RetroArch as it assigns the keys for every single core that supports a controller to the controller automatically. I've used Xpadder in the past, but never for LaunchBox related anything. I haven't really needed to use it in years. If your arcade stick doesn't use Xinput, but rather is a keyboard, then yea this can become an issue. However, a lot of emulators let you set specific controls and keep configs of special controls that you just need to load. I guess it comes down to this: What systems are you using with your arcade stick? Is it at all possible to map the stick directly in to the emulator instead of using Xpadder? Then again, Zombeaver is right. Bind Alt + F4 to something and you have the close function of Controler Automation. The beauty of controller automation though is that it's integrated and easy to use. It does also provide some extra functionality than just closing, but this is the biggest one for most users. I suggested Controller Automation also based on the information I had at the time, which was that you wanted to close PPSSPP, and in this case Controller Automation is all that is needed realistically.
  3. Name: Understanding RetroArch Cores (Info Files) - LaunchBox Tutorials Category: Tutorials Date Added: 2016-09-10 Submitter: SentaiBrad Today's tutorial is all about parsing through RetroArch info files! These files hold a lot of key information for most every core in RetroArch, and a lot of people don't realize these exist! I was also requested to explain the info files for users who did know they were there, but didn't know what it was trying to tell the user. It's not the most fanciful tutorial as it doesn't help you set up a system specifically, but this is still a very important tutorial for teaching you how RetroArch works in general. 4. If you want to have a visual for getting MESS up and running, there is a tutorial for it. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6pTDaHeAz-WMcNURVPU-1xLN_TVpT3FB
  5. Yea, that's part of the reason I use standalone MESS too. You also don't need MAME/MESS specific rom sets either. I used my regular roms in their regular location just fine. The only standalone emulators, now that I think about it, that I use are ScummVM, DosBox, MESS, PPSSPP and Desmume. I also have Taito Type X working, except that it's not emulated so it doesn't count. PCSX2, Dolphin, CEMU and Citra are still the go to because they're not in RetroArch, and even if they were I would honestly doubt how great they would be given how specific and specialized they are.
  6. Sure, of course. It's also worth pointing out that the MESS cores for RetroArch, I don't use. I either use an emulator alternate or the actual MESS software it's self instead of the core.
  7. You don't need the escape exit command. Controller Automation has long since replaced most of these functions.
  8. Sure, no problem. Some of my emulators need updating, but this is what I use in various ways, and it's actually mostly RetroArch. Also, the reason why I never talk about those specific emulators or systems, is because I honestly don't want to play them. I've got loaded up what I've made tutorials for, what I will make tutorials for, and what I want to play. MESS can also cover some of the more obscure stuff all in one. I cracked MESS a while back and made a tutorial on the channel about it if you're curious for some of the most obscure stuff that doesn't have standalones. 9. *Sigh* So... RSS will not happen this week afterall, but it will next week and the tutorial will come out Friday evening instead of 10AM PST. I knew this mic required Phantom Power, but during the whole situation of figuring out whats going on and rushing to order the new mic, I missed it. So I 1-day shipped the Phantom Power supply from Amazon, but it was after 5PM, so it will be here on Friday in the afternoon time. So Jason's not mad, im kicking myself a bit for the over sight, and as long as no one else is mad I think we're ok. I'll still come out of this ahead in audio equipment, but the sudden delay instead of transitioning over smoothly sucks, and I hate not being able to put out the content that some of you are starting to come to love and watch weekly. I do pride myself on being there every week at the same time, so please forgive us once more while we sort this out.
  10. For those that watch RSS and follow what we do on YouTube, I just want to let everyone know that RSS will be delayed from Tuesday to Thursday this week. My microphone broke, and I did a recording test like usual to get ready and noticed a loud screech in the backbround. Had it once before, but fixed it by unplugging the XLR cable and plugging it back in. I tried that again this time, and it didn't work. Tried re-seating the cables, different software and restarting the PC to no avail. A new mic is on the way, but this is why there will be a delay unfortunetly. From now on though, I should hopefully sound better. My mic before was great, but this one is even better!
  11. The settings must be saved to the default RetroArch.cfg, unless that is what you removed and you're still loading a custom config.

  14. Would they? I guess I'm not a kid of today anymore.
  15. Well actually, most of those RetroArch video's aren't out of date. Maybe a setting changed it's place slightly, but as far as I know, all of the info is still 100% valid. I did anticipate this though, either RetroArch updates to the point where the tutorial makes less sense or some new and better technique (even within RA) comes along and I'll have to re-record the video. Even a Feature Specific tutorial may need to be retired and re-recorded. As for that Wiki, im surprised you found it. I created that over 2 years ago now thinking that we would go that route. I wasn't even apart of the team yet at the time. We honestly decided to go a different route with the video, and I was later brought on to be our video guy. I tried to delete it, but they don't exactly make it easy, and no one has asked for it since to be honest. We've actually not really considered the Wiki route before, because actually the video is a lot easier to make and shows the user the direct steps in what to do. If Jason wants to go that route, we can figure it out at some point. So normally, as a YouTube creator, never download someones work to then re-upload: big no no. However, in this situation, since these are commercials and not something the user created them selves, I am a bit torn. I've done this myself: downloaded trailers or commercials and used them in some cases for the video within LB. There are websites dedicated to this sort of thing, and I would feel more comfortable talking with someone like that first, to see if they're all right with uploading the stuff they're managing. In the end, there is really nothing anyone can do about it as they don't own it, but as a courtesy to our fellow video game enthusiasts I would prefer to talk with them first. This is something I have thought about trying to do though, create a pack of commercials as an alternate and it doesn't interfere with something like EmuMovies.
  16. Name: Emulating the Super Game Boy - LaunchBox Tutorials Category: Tutorials Date Added: 2016-09-01 Submitter: SentaiBrad Today's tutorial is all about that awesome Super Game Boy. It was essentially, a Game Boy inside of a Super Nintendo cartridge, that played Game Boy and Game Boy Color games. I show you how to get the custom platform up and running, the special command line parameter that you need to set in order for it to work, and a few extra SGB things. While GBC games don't get quite the benefit from being inserted (and some don't work at all), both the Game Boy and Color variants get some awesome benefits from utilizing this method. Game Boy games can receive a basic palette swap that you can change, specifically designed enhanced colors, additions to the music, the music being completely different, custom borders (some of which can be applied to every single game, while some games have special borders), and probably most interesting is 2 player games being available in 2 player mode from the SNES instead of requiring 2 Game Boys, 2 Games and a Link Cable. 17. Name: Emulating the Wii U with CEMU - LaunchBox Tutorials Category: Tutorials Date Added: 2016-09-01 Submitter: SentaiBrad Today's tutorial is centered around the CEMU emulator for the Wii U. This emulator is in an Alpha state still, and requires a fairly powerful computer to ensure a consistent frame rate, but the emulator is shockingly farther along than you might assume. I certainly never thought we would be looking at a competent Wii U emulator this soon. If you need help in modding your Wii U so that you can rip the games that you own, then follow the links below for instructions on what to do. Doing a tutorial on how to mod your Wii U isn't really the focus of our channel, but the website has a tutorials section to help users out if that is something you'd like to do. -Update 8-25-16- The latest versions of CEMU (versions released after I made this video) require a command line parameter in order to load games now. So now, you must edit CEMU in LaunchBox and add -g in the default command line parameter box on the first tab in order to load a game. If you want to run it in fullscreen as well the command line must look like this: -f -g. CEMU Website: http://cemu.info/ Wii U Softmod: http://loadiine.ovh/gate.php? Name: Retro Style Spotlight - 8-30-16 - Super Game Boy, ToeJam & Earl, Pokemon Go VMU, Bubble Bobble Category: News and Entertainment Date Added: 2016-09-01 Submitter: SentaiBrad This weeks edition of Retro Style Spotlight showcases last weeks tutorial about the Super Game Boy, tells you about the Front End Poll over at EmuMovies, talks about the amazing reboot sequel for ToeJam and Earl called ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove (which looks awesome!), and showcases a demake for Pokemon Go that looks to bring some quirkiness to the... Dreamcast VMU! Crazy. This month in gaming is all about Bubble Bobble and the mark it left on the gaming industry that will forever be felt. It also serves as a memoriam for the games creator Fukio Mitsuji, who sadly passed away in 2008. If you enjoy RSS, thumbs up the video and if you have any questions, ask them below in the comments. 19. Name: Retro Style Spotlight - 8-23-16 - Wii U Emu, Game Boy Drones, Uper Grafx, Arcanum Category: News and Entertainment Date Added: 2016-09-01 Submitter: SentaiBrad In today's edition of Retro Style Spotlight: Last weeks tutorial was all about the Nintendo Wii U Emulator called CEMU, and it is staggeringly proficient at doing it's job, early on. The two major stories today is all about the Drone that is being controlled by an original Game Boy in Germany, and the device called Uper Grafx that attaches to the TurboGrafx 16 and increases the output capabilities of the amazing 8 bit console to a crisp 720p for modern displays. This month in gaming is all about the loved CRPG Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura that was released on PC in 2001. 20. Jason has been meaning to make it available on the Database directly, but hasn't gotten around to it yet. It probably wont be made available to download, and the only reason the link still works is cause Jason hasn't made the rules available on the site yet. When he does, it will go away.
  21. No, I just download both. If one of us has better quality art, it's usually a marginal difference. There is a check box to prefer the LBGDB or EmuMovies so that way it will choose what art to display, but you don't choose anything besides the media categories during import. You can later, go through the image folder and delete what you don't want or edit a game and remove what you don't want (then use the image clean up tool afterwards), but that is after it's imported. I do both because I want everything possible. They may have games that we don't and vice versa, so I just grab everything and honestly don't worry about it. It's all fairly high quality from both sources, and our Database is completely open for anyone to edit, so things are getting better daily on that front.
  22. Sometimes we have better box art, sometimes they do, if the image is roughly the same. I just get everything from both, but I mostly use EmuMovies for Video, Music and Manuals. I just download everything for every game so that way I know that I have everything I can get at that time.
  23. Probably a bit. As far as I know, it's just fancier transitions or bezels. I wouldn't call it a smoother launch necessarily, just a fancier launch. It probably does do a bit to hide some stuff, but if you have LaunchBox set the way you do or you launch your game or emulator in full screen, you get the same effect in the end. If the extra stuff is something you want, then RL is the way to go if you want the extra stuff it provides.
  24. By hide the OS, if you mean BigBox or LaunchBox pops up instead of Explorer, then that is totally doable and people do this. Otherwise, BigBox / LaunchBox launching your media in fullscreen is going to be what happens anyways, so why add a middle man?
