The big news with this release is the ability to select a mouse index. This will allow you to play multiplayer lightgun games in MAME, using IR sensor devices, like wii motes and a dolphin bar or the aimtrak peripherals.

I have had trouble with setting inputs in RA as well. Going into the config file and manually setting the button indexes worked for me. You can use a program like joytokey to help figure out what they are. Be careful though, because RA uses a zero index while some programs start from one.

My GPD Win arrived... along with some other goodies...

How well does the gpd handle psx and N64 games? Does MAME run ok? -
I was looking through Brunnis thread in the liberito forums. He has done some valuable testing on the existence of input lag on real hardware vs emulators. He takes the time to test multiple configurations of hardware and OS and his results are fascinating. To summarize: A real SNES running on a CRT telivision has an input delay of about 3.6 frames, or about 60ms. I have read elsewhere that input lag on real consoles generally range from 2 to 3 frames typically, with Yoshi's Island (the test game) being a bit higher than average. In any event, input lag on a real hardware exists. https://forums.libretro.com/t/an-input-lag-investigation/4407/458 Input lag in retroarch is between 4-6 frames (this with vysnc enabled) using BSNES accuracy and GPU hard Sync and no frame delay. This means that in the best case scenario an emulator is within 1 frame of the real hardware, with a 66.8ms-100.2ms input lag range, with 5 frames being the average (83.57ms). For reference, streetfighter 5 has 6.5 frames of input lag, and previously had 7.9 frames of input lag on the PS4. https://www.eventhubs.com/news/2016/sep/24/street-fighter-5-has-average-input-lag-65-now-according-display-lags-initial-draft-test/ So RA looks pretty good. Compared to Higan standalone, retroarch run a lot smoother and has as much as 3 frames less input lag. Worst case scenario for Higan is 7.9 frames input lag. In a more recent post, Brunnis compared the difference between running emulators with or without shaders. Using the highly intensive shaders like CRT Geome and CRT-Royale, he noted every test run was within margin of error. Using glsl shades does NOT introduce input lag. Unfortunately, using the raw input driver seems to have no benefits over xinput or dinput in his testing. Input lag averages 5 frames in every test. https://forums.libretro.com/t/an-input-lag-investigation/4407/458?u=mothergoose729 Something else I found interesting... Human reaction time to a visual stimulus is between 250-190ms on average, with as few as 1 in 1,000 individuals possessing a sub 100ms reaction time. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mental_chronometry I speculate that the relationship between how fast a human can process and react to what it on screen, and to what degree a person can experience and appreciate input lag, is probably a more complicated and nuanced topic. Interesting nonetheless. If RA input lag is consistently within 100ms I think that makes it acceptable for most everyone, and not far off from real hardware in some cases.

A bios is required just as the standalone

I am at a loss. I have the pegasus.zip file in the same directory as the game I am trying to load. Perhaps my games are named incorrectly? I don't think the newest version of MAME is as particular about that stuff as it used to be, but I could be wrong.

Anyone know how Skylake/Kaby Lake Pentiums fare for emulation?
mothergoose729 replied to airbikecop's topic in Emulation
It depends. For the most part, yeah, you don't need anywhere near the much. Some notable exceptions include the handful of PCSX2 games which require a powerful CPU to run smoothly (especially if you are forced to run them in the software render), some games in dolphin that smooth out a bit with a faster CPU, and the cutting edge not-really-ready for prime time emulators like Cemu and RCPS3. A pentium dual core will be fine for a lot of stuff. The areas where you might struggle are 1) Mednafen Saturn (3.5ghz quad core recommended) 2) Higan/BSNES (3.0ghz or so single core recommended) 3) Beetle PSX Software Render (native res should be fine, 2x res might not be smooth) And a few other edge cases. -
Anyone know how Skylake/Kaby Lake Pentiums fare for emulation?
mothergoose729 replied to airbikecop's topic in Emulation
Due to some quirks in SSE a haswell CPU can be faster in some workloads (RCPS3 developer claim its 10% faster or so than kaby lake clock per clock), but for the most part the IPC for intel hasn't changed much sense sandy bridge, but the clock speeds have gone up. A 7700k is ideal for emulation, even at stock clock speeds. To run all mature emulators at full speed, a 3.5ghz+ haswell or later dual core is the minimum, and a 4.0-4.5ghz quad core is ideal for the most intensive games (that can still be run at full speed at all). Of course, if you exclude the 6th generation console emulators, and choose emulator that are just really accurate instead of uber accurate, then a pi 3 is just about enough. Depends on what you are trying to do. -
Lower performance in PCSX2 for seemingly no reason
mothergoose729 replied to DjBlades's topic in Noobs
You really want to consult the PSX2 wiki and configure everything your self. Also, upgrade to the latest nightly release, as there are huge improvements that have been made compared to the stable. -

I can't find software for this machine anywhere. I have tracked down some pdf copies of the manuals, and there is some included software in the driver, but I can't find anything else. This guy has a website dedicated to preserving the computer. He has a list of what exists and what he has found, and some tips on how to get things going in MAME, but he isn't sharing any of the files. EDIT: I take it back, he has an FTP server. This is probably the most complete collection of software for this computer anywhere in the world. Awesome! ftp://neoncluster.com/Aamber Pegasus/WAV files/Games/

Its back up now.

This is a really obscure 8bit computer from New Zealand that I guess MAME is supposed to support. I found an image for the pegasus labeled pegasus.zip, and I found another labeled pegasusm.zip with expanded memory. I assume it has the bios and all the programs it comes with by default. When I try and load the zip file with MAME in RA it just crashes. I also have read that it supports a couple more games via cassette, but I can't find any information and ROMs anywhere. Does anyone know anything about this system and how to get it up and running? Thanks.

Blumsx in RA load .dsk images like any other rom. Disk swapping is supported in the quick menu, although on the few games I tried I could never get it to work. 90 percent of the msx/msx2 library are flash carts though, with only a few story games and quite a number from the msx magazine days being only available in disk.

What is your favorite thing or special feature in Launchbox?
mothergoose729 replied to JaysArcade's topic in Monkeys
Media, metadata, and emumovies. I was writing playlists by hand in retroarch before I switched over. Getting media together for that simple front end was a bitch. Bigbox is pretty sweet too. There is a lot of things I could say about LB actually. The only "problems" I have with LB is that it doesn't have every feature on my wishlist... yet. -
Same emulator for different controller layout
mothergoose729 replied to hardhead241's topic in Troubleshooting
Retroarch will work fine without any extra configuration. If your arcade sticks are xinput, then you won't have any trouble mixing and matching with pcsx2 or dolphin either. Demul maps controls to specific device id and there is not way to do anything at all sophisticated in the command line. You will have to configure two or more separate instances for that emulators, with each control setup, and then load them in as alternate options for games or create multiple emulators. There are several ps1 core in retroarch you can use, including epsxe, pcsx REarmed, and my preference in mednafen (beetle). I would recommend running ps1 games using one of those cores for the most flexibility with controllers. I don't know enough about Cemu to comment. What you want to do can be done, it will just take some work. -
Looking for the highest quality console emulation for each console
mothergoose729 replied to vgbox's topic in Noobs
The systems that are best emulated through mame is an interesting topic, and one where you are not likely to find a lot of consensus. This is a good place to start, but their list is neither complete nor comprehensive. http://nonmame.retrogames.com -
NES Mini Classic , Not accurate emulator :) #LOOL

By our communities standards, all of the commercial emulators ever released are low quality and poorly written. They are after a different set of objectives than we are. -

Judgement silver sword is a decent shmup. Klanoa is a pretty good platformer, although it switches rotation throughout the game making it a pain to play. Flash Koibito-Kun is amusing, and Battle Swan Collosseum isn't bad for what is essentially a two button fighter. If you don't read Japanese though, there really isn't a lot for you. Even if you do, it wasn't exactly the most amazing handheld. Still plenty of fun to be had though.

RA uses a framelimiter in addition to vysnc. The issue with vsync off is getting the frame timing right, not just for tearing, but because if it is off you get choppy visuals as well. For 2d games which only have a couple frames of animation per action, it is super noticeable. On a 60hz display, I don't think setting any kind of vsync in the drivers would help, but it might work fine if you have a monitor with a greater than 75zh refresh rate. I don't really know why setting a frame delay helps, I only know that for me it does, and very noticeably so. Frame delay also helps a lot if you prefer to play with vysnc disabled in RA, although the smoothest animations will always be with RA vsync turned on. Again, I think it has something to do with the frame timing.
-
It is also worth noting that Mednafen Wonderswan will be choppy in RA if you have a 60hz monitor, because the wonderswan runs at 75 frame per second, and RA disabled vsync automatically if the emulator runs faster than your native refresh rate. To get it to run smoother, use the highest frame delay value your system can handle. (The more you know).

Neat, I'll check that out. I know that MESS had problems with analog centering, but I don't remember reading about it one way or another with atari800 core.

Let me know if you are also interested in the 8 bit computers.

What is rocket launcher? Should I be using it?
mothergoose729 replied to mothergoose729's topic in Noobs
Launchbox will attempt to create an alternate profile for each disk automatically. It is how I prefer to deal with multi disc games, as I find M3U files really cumbersome. RL can launch controller profiles for each game though, and some other stuff that is pretty cool, and not super easy to do in LB at the moment.
