I would take a look at this thread. Some users have found FLV video files have caused issues. It could be some where corrupt. I know removing any FLV from my builds has stopped crashes from Attract Mode. Not saying this is the true cause, just mentioning it was found to be an issue at least for a few users.

I came here to log the exact same issue and stumbled up this post. My arcade cabinet runs 24/7 and only contains the software necessary to run the games within BigBox. 50/50 on if BigBox will be running when I go out to play a game. Sometimes it will be on the Windows desktop with no error or I'll see an error message about running out of memory. Almost seems like it has a memory leak if you leave it running in attract mode for too long. This arcade cabinet has 16GB of RAM and will crash in about 2 days. This started happening to me about 4 months ago. I can't really pinpoint what release it started with, but this is fairly new and a new install is having the same issue.

Typically when debugging this issue the crash occurs because the OS is killing the process for whatever reason. The best log to get a good idea what is going on is the Windows Event Viewer log. There should be an Application Error log entry for the crash. That log will be quite a bit more useful to see than the Big Box log.

************* very hard to find exactly the problem...... but for sure.... i notice that the error .net runtime should be behind this... and every version of BB is ok until 11.2 ( still good ) ... as soon a update 11.3 and later ... problem with runtime.........

i think that the bb team should take a look of what happen between 11.2 and 11.3 ...... windows 11 x64

still waiting for your best bet.. because now i will have to stay in 11.2 forever....

can the creator makes somethings to solve it ... the version after 9.1 crash my BB

This issue has actually been around for many versions for random users. The thread I linked to in my previous post stretches back to early 2021. The issue is the devs, for the most part, have not been able to replicate it on their end. So finding a solution has not been easy. In the thread I linked some users found their issue was certain video files. Personally I have had the issue affect me randomly for several years now. I still have one cabinet that is occurs at random while the others had not had it occur in quite some time now.

My point is the issue seems to be sporadic amongst users and even Jason in his notes in that thread I linked was not seeing any crashes on his testing. So this may not be an easy find to the cause.

If there is anything else I can provide that will help track down the issue, I am more than happy to get it for you. I play on my cabinet daily and I can't remember the last time it was up and running the following day. I had tried moving from Windows 10 to 11 as a last resort, but alas that didn't help. I really didn't expect it to, but it was worth a shot.

@Jason Carr has any progress been made at identifying this issue? I turned attract mode back on for the the first time since back in March and it still is crashing back to the desktop between 24 and 36 hours of inactivity. I see a few tickets marked resolved on Bitbucket but were back in 2021. Should I open a new ticket over there? I would love to help get this resolved if at all possible.

12.14. I had high hopes after reading the release notes but it didn’t seem to help with this issue.

At this point, there are things that you can do on your end that could help out with attract mode crashing:

  • Use VLC instead of WMP. WMP has a known memory leak that can crop up after a prolonged period of time when using Attract mode.
  • You could have certain types of videos that are partially corrupted, or in a deprecated file format (like flv), that could be causing the crash.

I have always used VLC. I have done a clean install of Windows and LaunchBox including downloading all images and videos from scratch both times. There are 0 other applications installed in the arcade cabinet other than what is absolutely necessary to run the games. I have a EmuMovies premium account so I get whatever the game database has and what they have. I even tried removing all platforms but MAME to limit the possible things causing a problem. Sounds like I will just stick running the game when I'm done instead of using attract mode for now. Thanks for the input.

I did finally have a moment to review things over the weekend and I can at least confirm there are no FLV formatted files. The only format in any of the folders is MP4. Again, I'll just not use attract mode, but wanted to put that out there just in case any bit of info will help.
