No problem, not sure exactly when or why this became a problem with the UI versions of Mame. Mame used to be perfectly fine launching from LB with the ini file in it's default folder but at some point it started being an issue. LB didn't change anything at all since it just calls the exe and rom file and nothing else. I know it used to not be an issue because when I first started using LB I was using MameUI but I have long since switched over to the command line version of Mame and generate my own ini file in the Mame install folder.

Try putting your mame.ini file in the same folder as the mame executable.

I just tested it and it works for me. Try it out using the Mesen core, this is by far the best and most compatible NES emulator / core available. It's basically 99.9% cycle accurate and every game should work for it, if the Japanese version of Contra doesn't work it is most likely your rom is bad.
-
None of the updates should have messed up any paths at all. Did you just update LB or did you update your Mame or roms ?

Set Hard GPU Sync to On Hard GPU Sync Frames to 0 Frame Delay set to as high as you can without hearing any audio crackling, if you set it too high and get audio crackles dial it back til the sound gets good again. This will be a per core and maybe per game setting if you really wanna be that specific with it. Audio Latency set to as low as you can set it without hearing audio crackle. Run ahead is the new "hackish" way of reducing input lag and you will need to experiment with it. You will need to play around with it to get the exact number you want on a per core basis. All of these will impact performance some so you will have to tinker to find the best settings for your PC, the defaults are a good safe middle ground so that even lower end hardware is fine out of the box.

It depends on the platform and the way your roms are named. Some platforms aren't so well populated on in the database though that for the most part isn't much of a problem anymore. If your rom names have a lot of extra crap in them that isn't surrounded by brackets that will mess with the scraper. Ideally you want your roms to be named the same as the game and anything else in the name of the file that isn't a part of the game name should be in brackets.

I now have detailed Platforms..how did this happen?
Lordmonkus replied to mthompson239's topic in Noobs
lol, its a check box that is kind of camouflaged, it's easy to miss if you don't know it's there. It's at the bottom of this screen here. -

Those are playlists, they most likely got added when you imported your Mame games, there is a check box to not have it generate them in the importer at the last step. The easiest way to get rid of them is to close LB and then go to your \LaunchBox\Data\Playlists folder and delete the xml files in there. Load up LB again and they should be gone. If you ever want them back just go to the Tools menu and Create Missing Arcade/MAME Playlists. -
Nestopia full screen and Pinball FX3 Exit
Lordmonkus replied to mthompson239's topic in Troubleshooting
For Nestopia go into the Preferences and turn on Switch to fullscreen on startup and turn off Confirm exit. And in the AHK script tab of your Nestopia emulator in Launchbox put in the following script $Esc:: { Process, Close, {{{StartupEXE}}} } As for Pinball FX3 I don't have it so I cannot test it but the script you posted does work for my older Pinball FX2 setup. -
Honestly, I would not suggest removing any files, you can very easily remove a required parent rom and break it. Using the 2p rom example, that would would be the "clone" rom that lets you play ther 2 player variant but it requires the main simpsons.zip "parent" and if you delete that file the 2p file will not work on its own. If you do decide you want to clean up your set and delete stuff just make sure you move it out to a temporary folder first and test the game again before emptying the temporary folder.

MSX is an older Microsift computer that was sold in Japan. SGX is the SuperGrafx which was an upgraded TurboGrafx 16 / PC Engine and yes PCE is PC Engine. The different Simpsons file are different "clone" roms, they are either different region or different number of players. Some arcade games had 4 player cabs and 2 player cabs. Take a game like Gauntlet or TMNT for example, in the 4 player cabinet the coin slot you put your quarter into that determined which character you played. But with the 2 player cabinet you can put your quarter in whatever slot you wanted and you can just pick which character you wanted. 2p is probably the 2 player, 2pj is probably 2 player japan, 2pa is probably 2 player asia, 4pa is probably 4 player asia, 2p2 and 2p3 I dont know what those would be

PD = Pleasure Dome

The latest FBA set on PD is just over 13 gigs.
-
Fortunately the FBA rom set is not as big and doesn't have all the bloat that the Mame set has.
-
The one without the year should be the go to one depending on which FBA rom set you use. FBA does have its own romset, it can use some Mame roms but of course compatibility is not guaranteed.
-
The FBA core in RA.
-
Take a look at this video.
-
FBA is pretty good, it supports quite a lot of games but of course not as many as Mame. Yeah it supports games that would normally require CHDs like in Mame but you don't need them, I use it to play the Capcom CPS3 without the CHD files. Lag is dependent upon internet connection.
-
I'm not sure but I don't think Mame has netplay support, if I remember correctly it doesn't have save state support and netplay requires that for it to work. FBA has netplay support so you should use that for arcade netplay, was playing some 3 player TMNT with it last night with some buddies.

The current Launchbox UI is getting an overhaul and replaced by Launchbox Next when it is ready.
-
I would just make a shortcut file for the game and import the shortcut as a rom to the platform you want and then edit the game, then go to the Emulation tab and uncheck the the "Use and emulator to play this game" box.
