Yeah, seems like a good idea. I've just checked my cache and I have 10,000 files in it dating back to around 2015. Bear in mind that the current version of Demul that I use is the 0.7 11-11-2017 version and I've carried these over from previous Demul versions back to probably v0.582. PM me for a link. They are 100mb unpacked, 600k compressed lol. I'd suggest do a Malware / Virus scan on the archive first and to rename your existing folder to "scache-old" or something, just incase you want to use it again and my one doesn't make any difference.

Yeah, I was really put off by this stuttering in Demul until I realised it was creating a cache of each game in real time. I've never deleted the cache either and I have transferred it to each new version of Demul that has come out. Even now, after about 3 years of using it, I'll still get the odd stutter or freeze, I guess this is when the game throws up a new texture, but it rarely happens now. I'd sometimes just run random DC games in BigBox and go away and make dinner or something just so Demul can cache it up. Infact, I'm gonna give Blue Stinger a go in a minute and see what happens. It's been a while. FYI too, the Cemu (Wii U) emulator does a similar sort of thing. Those caches are way more involved though, with some forums created specifically for posting and trading Cemu caches heh.

That is a good question actually and one that I don't know the answer to. The reason being is that I'm quite rubbish at games and have never got so far that I've needed to swap discs, on any system lol. I have my discs in separate archive files. I have imported them all and then they come up as duplicates in the Audit feature. I have then consolidated them in LaunchBox so that all the discs are consolidated under Disc 1. As for the method of actually switching discs while in game, I'm not actually sure about in Demul. I might try and play a game for more than an hour for research purposes so I can be of more help

Did you ever get to go inside John Romero's opulent (and some people say, offensive) offices?

Great post! I love reading these nostalgic MS-DOS posts in much the same way I love the "Lazy Game Reviews" or LGR channel over on YouTube. The passion in which you guys speak about the platform is palpable. I feel like I missed out but at least I get a little feel for it thanks to your project and DOSBOX. Speaking of shaders etc, I actually prefer to play a game like Quake and Doom totally vanilla. No source ports, no scaling or supereagle. Just 1920x1080 and some lovely mid 90's slightly jaggy polygons. Too many enhancements, I feel, takes away from how it was originally.

I love this. And your first post too! Thanks. Yeah, it seems like the PC went up a gear around 93-94 with the advent of the CD-ROM and the death of the Amiga. (I find that whole era fascinating because I was an Amiga 1200 fanboy at the time and never played anything DOS until relatively recently, thanks to eXoDOS.)

What has it got to do with me? I'm just a dude on the internet advising you that putting a hot CRT monitor in an enclosed space is probably not a good idea.

Back then, did the PC platform feel inferior to the Amiga at the time? I'm in the UK and the Amiga was big here but I always thought the PC was superior and yet, just recently, I read someone else say that around 1994 "the PC starting emerging from under the shadow of the Amiga". I found this surprising because I always thought the Amiga was the underdog.

If you did that, you would probably end up setting fire to your house and incinerating your family. You know those things get hot, right?

What "aesthetic issues" are these Dan? We were all thinking that you were a DOS aficionado, looking for the real deal.

Excellent post. I love to hear / read people reminiscing about DOS. Such a MIGHTY platform when you think about it. Two decades! PS. Acrid smell of smoke if you used your Uncles PC - Hahahaha!

I've got quite a bespoke bunch of MS-DOS media stuff which I categorise differently to any 'normal' person in this world. I went a bit nuts with the 'Add To LaunchBox Database' plugin, before I remembered that my MS-DOS section is particular to me. I have a lot of alternative box covers all lumped into the "Box - Front - Reconstructed" folder rather than in regions for example. I also have screenshots of my Xpadder profiles under the "Arcade Controls Information" folder so the plugin upped those as well, and they won't be any good to anyone else lol, and various other junky bits and pieces in the "Fanart - Background" folder. From memory, the games affected are: MegaRace Chex Quest 1, 2 and 3 Arya Vaiv Xargon Stargunner Kiloblaster Speed Haste Redneck Rampage So please, reject these at will. Accept my apologies. I do feel a dick. Erm....I mean, I feel like a dick.

Haha. It is a common mistake with that emulator. I think I might have fallen for it myself. Also, don't be put off if the games are a bit stuttery at first. Demul caches the graphics in a folder called "scache" in real time. So the more you use the emulator, the more of the cache gets built up. Once a lot of games have been cached, Demul runs as smooth as butter. I love that emulator.

Select the option "Config" and then "Plugins and Paths". There is a drop down menu for "GD-ROM plugin". This needs to be "gdrImage". Possibly.

Thanks for the story about your clear logo. Would you like us to make the box art for you?

We need to put you on light duties. This video at 0:55. Let's pretend that eXo is the Overlord, the minions are the common users like myself and others (who have long since worked out how to install this), and you're the dude saying "where are we going again?".

That Strategy pack is roughly 50GB. You must have a spare 200GB somewhere. Copy it there, blam that Setup batch file with reckless abandon, throwing your hands in the air like you just don't care and watch what happens. A little bit of testing and observation. It has to be better than sitting around 'waiting by the phone' for eXo to answer your question, that he has probably answered 10 times before in this thread. Live a little. Do it......

You're not very adventurous, are you Dan?

Updated: My magazines platform in Bigbox
JamesBond@ge replied to JaysArcade's topic in Collections and Builds
Thanks for this mate. I started a platform of this ilk quite a while ago, and was manually screenshotting and cropping the covers of magazines (PDF's) for the box art but it was so cumbersome that I gave up after 30 magazines lol. Your post might inspire me to carry on with it. -
What are the sizes (GB's) are the final two volumes please eXo?
-
NWOBHM. Because, of course, the British invented Heavy Metal.

jayjay is the one of the king's of scripts, make no mistake.

That's exactly how I think when I look at my Windows Platform and it has been grating on me. Having Microsoft Pinball Arcade, Daytona USA, Sega Rally 2 and Speed Busters in with Blur, Alice Madness Returns and Stardew Valley, argh it just doesn't look right. Hah, now I know I'm not the only one who thinks like this, I've got the motivation now to pull apart that platform. I'm gonna pad it up some with releases you have made on Zomb's Lair too. Thanks for letting me pick your brains about this era of computing Zombie Beaver. You're a goldmine of info. Sorry to Dan for partially derailing the thread.
