I more ordinarily use the Chrome Plex app when casually watching things on PC. I only really use PMP when I have it setup in my living room with an actual remote control (Harmony 890). So I don't really have an issue with navigation so much. I don't really like that you go into TV/Movies/whatever and it first has recommendations before you get to your library in alphabetical order. When I'm using PMP, it's for a well planned movie night, and I know exactly what movie I'm going to watch. With Netflix, I understand having "recommendations" because someone else manages that library, but with Plex, I know what's there, and I know what I want to watch. But I can see where it would be useful for family members and stuff, people that don't really see the "behind the scenes" of their media content. -

idk, outside of theming it, I like it well enough. I was using the Roku app pretty exclusively for a while (my HTPC and main work PC are the same and I had to drag it back and forth from the livingroom). PMP looks almost exactly like the Roku app, so I can't really complain too much. -

It's Plex Media Player, it's what replaced Plex Home Theater, it's downloadable from their website as an ".exe" installer. It's not as pretty or customizable, but it does have a lot more file codec support, and is easier to setup. It's really nice that it handles x265 encoding, I've been slowly re-encoding my library to use it. I get at least a 50% cut in file size, so it's very nice, although my media server still has very little available free space. -
I do have quite a few wireless devices in my home, however (hopefully), a lot of that will be wired in the next few months. Crawled under the house over the weekend and found yards and yards of old coax cable that connected to nothing at all. I'm working on getting everything wired up to my office, so that should clear up the wireless noise around my entertainment center (where my router currently lives). So far even my logitech unify devices don't work well in the livingroom. That might be the culprit. After thinking about the whole way retroarch recognizes different controllers and sets up controllers automatically per console differently. I saw somewhere that the Mayflash N64 and SNES adapters both show up as the same controller, so mapping one, messes up the other, I was wondering if I could have a few different retroarch folders and have specific games use different retroarchs? Would something like that work? Like let's say C:\Users\Me\Launch box\emulators\Retroarch(n64) C:\Users\Me\Launch box\emulators\Retroarch(NES) ... Or would each retroarch refer to the same configuration files in some way? I'm still new to using retroarch and I'm slowly making my way to using it for almost everything. It's been particularly convenient for it's auto-controller mapping, but it messes stuff up at times too.

So, I found this on amazon, it looks like it's basically a bluetooth emitter adapter for SNES controllers, but it sends it out as Xinput. I wanted to know if you had any experience with this brand or knew anything about it. I kinda feel that it's probably going to have latency issues, but at the same time, the wireless factor is a bit tempting.

[Request/Suggestion] Controller icon for each game

The theme I'm using has a way of showing a specific controller per game/per platform. I've been using it for PC games to let me know if it's controller or keyboard based. I've also been using it to label buttons on games. Like in this screenshot, because I have a PS1 controller/USB adapter, but not a genesis one, it's letting me know how it's mapped if I wanna play Mortal Kombat 3. I'm sure that this is something you can do at the theme level, but I don't know how to do it myself, outside of dropping them into a folder in this theme.- 7 replies

Good to know, I'm one of those newbs that doesn't quite understand the difference between Dinput and Xinput. I speculate that Xinput has something to do with windows compatibility with the XBOX 360 controller. But that's about all I think I know :-P

Thank you so so much. Atari 2600 was before my time, so I'm probably not gonna dive into that, and I never had a Sega Saturn (or a friend with one), so it's compatibility isn't too terrible. The mayflash GameCube adapter that I have has a physical switch that makes it a Wii U version, what compatibility issues does it have? I mainly use it for mario kart, so I might not be experiencing any issues with it. Also, do you use retroarch for your 8-bit/16-bit consoles? Or something different? If you are using retroarch, does it automatically configure itself correctly? Basically, what I'm doing so far, using @shro2016's NESiCAxLive theme I'm having it indicate which controller I need for each game, for example it shows a picture of a keyboard and mouse for Half-Life, or currently, I have a graphic of a Sega Genesis controller over a PS1 controller indicating which buttons are which on the PS1 controller when starting the game. This way it let's me know that I need to use the PS1 controller for that game, and that A, B, and C are Square, Cross, Circle instead. Ultimately I'd like to just have it setup so that anyone can just look at the picture and plug in the appropriate controller before they play the game. I have a coffee table that lifts up to reveal my stash of controllers. I'm probably gonna cut it down to 2 controllers per console so that everything fits properly. But for now, I think it looks cooler to have everything there like that.

Yeah, that was a mess, it came with an N64 that had soda damage, it turned on sometimes, sometimes it didn't, sound intermittently worked, I tried fixing it but the damage was too bad. I was able to recover the controllers though. 2 directions on the D-Pad doesn't work, but most N64 titles never use the D-Pad so no big loss. They work great otherwise :-)

Which controller to USB adapters do you use? I've been using Mayflash so far. They seem to work fine, except the GameCube one changes which controller is which in dolphin everytime I use it. But if I have it set to the "Wii U" setting, it works perfectly for some reason, so it's an unusual fix, but since it works, I'm not complaining too much.

I think I'm just going to track them down and do the best I can at finding reputable USB to w/e adapters. Right now I'm using a PS1 (original not dual shock), for Genesis/NES/SNES games, and that works ok for now (for some reason retroarch maps it weirdly for NES titles though), and I use PS1, DualShock 1, DualShock 2, N64, and GameCube controllers for their respective consoles. I use the XBOX 360 controller for PC games (when I can), I use the GameCube controllers for the 2 Wii games I play, and the XBOX 360 controller for the Wii-U games that I can (some games look better emulated, but some games work best with the actual Wii U, so it's still hooked up for now). EDIT this took me a while to type and a few more comments came in while I was typing, so my post may no longer be relevant to the conversation, reading over the other posts now.

I already have N64 controllers, and they work great (after a few hours of fixing), I also replaced the joysticks with GameCube ones because the original stick isn't great, it's an easy replacement to do. I'm just really looking for good quality, relatively decent prices for NES, SNES, and Genesis controllers.

So I've been doing my best to collect USB adapters (typically Mayflash) and original controllers. Often times original controllers require a LOT of maintenance to workout just right.I think that getting the "original" experience is what drives me the most for this. I mean, I've played through a lot of SNES classics with an XBOX 360 controller, but it never feels right. So I've been getting USB adapters and original controllers. But I wanted to know if the USB controller "knock offs" were any good. By knock off, I mean non-nintendo/sega branded controllers that look like the original SNES/Genesis/whatever controllers, but use USB to directly plug into your PC. I see them all over Amazon, and some are reasonably priced, but I know some cheaper electronics are as sturdy as cardboard (plastic can break from moderate use). But is it worth while to hunt down original parts and restore them? Or do these USB controllers work alright? My collection currently lacks NES, SNES, and Genesis. I already have adapters and original controllers for everything else from my childhood.

Yup, and now I feel a bit dumb. That did the trick, although I did run into some issues with actually getting the textures loaded with the GlideN64 plugin (OOT gave me some issues partway through loading), did a search to find the same texture pack to download it again, and boom, I found the texture pack already packed into the htc file. It was a link in a youtube video, so double derp for me :-P

I don't mind at all :-), I've been doing quite a lot of graphical mods to your theme on my end to better suite my own needs. Mainly creating or modifying existing art (found via google search) to make everything work for my own needs. I've attached my current progress. I really love the freedom that your theme has for modification. Having company logos and controllers that are modifiable per game is awesome. I'm surely not finished with my theme mod project, but I'm more than happy to contribute. The only snag I've run into as far as logos and controller art is, anytime there is a ":" in the game name or company name, I have to change it to " -", because you can't have ":" in a windows file name. So it's a little bit more manual effort with that, but I think the results are worth it. I saw that you were able to incorporate animated gif files into your theme, and if you're working on a new theme, I might be able to do some neat animated game boxes for it. It would take some time, but I think it would be a neat thing to do. I was also wondering, and I'm not sure if BigBox has this flexibility, but do you know of a way to have the video preview of a game be game play footage, and then when you go into the sub-menu of a game, it plays the game trailer instead? I think that would be really neat, or even just a "play trailer" button or something. I've just been super impressed and blown away with what you've been able to do with this theme, and I thought I'd throw some thoughts your way since you're working on a new one. I love doing graphic artwork when I can, and I'm "ok" at 3D modeling and animation in blender, and I can make some animated gifs that way. NESiCAxLive(with modded art).zip

So I downloaded the latest version of Project64, I also downloaded the texture pack from scratch (it kept crashing with the one that works on a previous version of Project64), Using the "Glide64 For PJ64: 2.1.2.3" I still only get ".dat" files as a result. I'm tinkering with settings though. I did notice that the Glide64 still needs to be set to "Rice" in order to use the texture pack though.

Interesting, and a little discouraging. So my loose files look like this Would these be considered the "loose" files? If so, what plugin for Project64 do I need to use in order to produce the .htc files?

Yeah, I saw that, but Project 64 isn't making the .htc file from the loose files for me. I have a bunch of ".dat" files in ~LaunchBox\Emulators\Project64 2.1\Plugin\GFX\cache, but even after launching a game, I don't get any .htc files. I'm using the Glide64 plug-in and the "rice format" for hi res textures.

So I've been slowly making Launchbox/BigBox home, and I've been working more and more with retroarch, after getting things setup initially, it's just nice to have it be there and re-configure controls for whatever device I happen to be using. That being said, I'm not having much luck with getting N64 emulation rolling with the hi res texture pack I have for Zelda OOT. I can only find the "rice" plugin available within the "parallel_n64" core, but I don't know where to drop the textures. Another thing that's weird is that the game doesn't appear to be rendering correctly with the "parallel_N64" core. Everything looks fine in Mupen, but I still can't get high res textures in either way. I've seen some other posts that say they get it working, but I don't know where to actually put the files. In Project64, I put the files here: ~\LaunchBox\Emulators\Project64 2.1\Plugin\GFX\hires_texture, then each game had it's own folder.

I've been adding all of the publisher logos, and customizing the controls for each game/platform and I noticed something while testing everything out. There isn't a line under RAM in platform view. Everything else has the line, and I just looked through your screenshots for the theme, and there are still no lines under RAM. Is that intentional? Or is there a quick fix for it? I don't have VS installed right now, but I could do so if it's an easy thing to update.

I am contributing some company logos. They are all named correctly, however for "Nitro Games / Remedy Entertainment" I changed it in the game to "Nitro Games, Remedy Entertainment" because "/" is not allowed in the file name. Anyway, these were all missing for my own collection, so I thought I'd share in case anyone else has a PC game library they'd like to include.

Gotcha, yeah, I think it would be nice to be able to launch Plex directly from the main wheel, and not have to go into a submenu for it. I'd be all over it if there was a plug-in that did that. I really need to re-install MS-Visual Studio so I can work on little things in BigBox. -
