Mednafen Saturn coming ?

Eh, honestly I've spent a lot of time setting stuff up in SSF as I've always considered it to be the only real choice prior to now, but I have zero problem completely dumping it for Mednafen and never looking back. There's none of the game-by-game hacky configuration with convoluted unintuitive settings like what you have to deal with with SSF. I don't have to trick LB into launching things in the proper order so that it'll mount the image and run the emulator for every game. Most importantly, it just works, and it does so very consistently. I'm getting a more consistent and satisfactory experience with a day's work invested in Mednafen than I got after weeks of work on SSF. I'm definitely looking forward to the Retroarch port as well, but I don't think anybody needs to wait for it to be honest - Mednafen is easy as hell to setup and if you've got Saturn rips that need some adjustment to work, it's probably best to get that taken care of now, rather than running into it once the Retroarch core drops.

Damn this emulator being so good. Because of it's high quality already I am now stuck in getting games mode. My collection has grown from about a dozen games to now being over 45. It's gonna end soon though since I am getting to the point that all that is left is either pure Japanese RPGS, casino games, absolutely hideous early 3D games or one of the many fighting games which I have in Mame anyways. I do have some overlap into the arcade ports with 2D shooters though.

Yeah, I've grabbed a couple new things myself as result of it. I'm at 60 currently. Sengoku Blade I was actually able to get working after converting all the mp3s to wavs (it won't mount in DT otherwise) and then converting to bin+cue. Thanks for the tip on that! At this point the only things that are outright broken for me are: 1) Elan Doree, and based on what Hakase-Nyan over on the Reddit thread said, it must be a problem with my rip. I haven't been able to find a working alternative though and CD-Mage doesn't seem to work in this case. 2) Virtual Fighter, which is broken for everyone. So...one actually broken game out of 60 tested. And the 59 that work typically run better (or at least as well) than they do on the alternatives (assuming Yabause/SSF are able to run them at all, which is a much more frequent "if" than it is with Mednafen). Love it. One other kindof interesting thing of note that I discovered is that there's a prototype version of Deep Fear that's US region - the game was never released in the US. The prototype works great in Mednafen haha.

I haven't looked into either of those games. Early 3D era fighting games just don't do it for me anymore. I did love Virtua Fighter 2 back in the day, I actually owned it when I owned my Saturn back in 94/95 but nowadays if I feel like it ill load up 3 on Dreamcast or PS2. But yeah the working to not working ratio is insanely good. I grabbed DoDonPachi just to check out the port to see how good it was compared to the arcade and its surprisingly decent. Slightly lower resolution sprites but the gameplay is super smooth and the sound is great. The download came in ccd+img format which didn't work but mounting and re-dumping using ImgBurn fixed it. Glad your Sengoku Blade worked with the audio conversion.

Oh! That's right. It flickered in the intro. I had actually forgotten about that.

Have you had any compatibility issues with the RA core that aren't present in standalone by the way? My rip of Albert Odyssey works just fine in standalone but doesn't in RA. It says something like "unreadable data in sector 0" after launching and then goes to the media player screen. The exact same rip and exact same bios work fine in standalone. I've started converting a few things over to RA and that's the only one so far where there was a compatibility discrepancy.

Ah okay, must just be a current inherent problem with the core then.

I've only been converting a few things over - primarily 3D fighters that have interlacing issues (which are correctable via shaders) and a few shmups (so that I can use hard GPU sync). Anything with good sprite work looks better with some shader love though so that's why I tried Albert Odyssey.

EDIT: Also...ohhhhh crap :(

Apparently the issue with Albert Odyssey had to do with the length of the file name. After renaming it and updating the .cue sheet accordingly it worked just fine. Something to keep in mind if people have any issues. I've had to do this with a couple of C64 games in the past that had particularly long file names and/or weird characters in the file name.

I'm also happy to report that Astal does indeed appear to be fixed in the newest version of Mednafen, both for crashing and choppy music. Yay! :) No more intro text flickering in PD either.
