Mame CHD's

I can tell you how I solve for my missing CHD files. I use the build of MAME called Arcade64. It has a nice gui with different categories, a search function, and finally you can click on any game and do a single audit which will tell you every file that is required to run it. JoJo is like many MAME games. There are versions that do not need the CHDs, and some that do. You can figure out which ones buy using the steps I outlines.

If a game has a chd associated with it, then it will not work without the chd. You can't have both a chd and a non chd version of the same game.

As far as I know, these games need both chds. Put them into folders named after the game roms.
So the 2 chds for Jojos Bizarre Adventure go in a folder named jojoba
and the 2 chds for Soul Calibur II go in a folder named soulclb2
Do not zip these folders.

By the way, Soul Calibur II also needs the bios sys246.zip

If you want a list of only the CHD files you need, I can give you one later on tonight so you can save 350GB of hard drive space.

Hi @Styphelus

I wondered if I could be a bit cheeky and also ask for that list? I'm currently going through pruning MAME games that I won't ever play and found that Area 51 didn't work (that one I definitely want to play). A bit of Googling and I found the CHDs that I needed and sorted it but if you had a list already then that would save me a ton of time and be very much appreciated. :)

Thanks :)

Thank you. Arcade64 helped me sort and audit all my MAME files.

Just chiming in to simplify the chd update process (complete noob here):

1) Download the chd zip file (for one of the working games mentioned above)

2) The zip file download should be named exactly the same as the existing rom zip file in your Mame/rom folders (for example Killer Instinct 2 would already exist as kinst2.zip in Mame/roms in your merged or split roms set)

3) For your kinst2.zip file (chd download), you want to create a new windows folder called kinst2 (doesn't matter where in windows you do this, I did on my external drive where I have Mame running)

4) Extract the kinst2.zip file (chd download) and drag/copy&paste the chd you just extracted into the newly created kinst2 folder

5) Copy the kinst2 folder (which includes the chd) into the Mame/roms folder

6) This is where it's confusing b/c if you didn't create that new kinst2 windows folder, you would be trying to copy/paste over an existing Mame rom.

Hopefully this isn't more confusing to anyone seeing this.

Been trying to learn up on all this.  I'm currently extracting the 60gb rom set so I can setup Retroarch mame core.  Let me see if I get this correctly.  This 60gb rom set is going to contain all the arcade games,  but many of them will not work because they require a CHD file (which is in the larger 350gb download?).  Is the list several comments up the list of games that will require a CHD file?  What is the total size of a complete set where all the CHD files are present for only the games needing them?  Will retroarch Mame use the CHD files the same way by placing them in a named folder next to the rom?

Basically I'm wanting to have the complete set with as many working Arcade games as possible.  I don't care about hard drive space but if a game doesn't need a CHD file to run why would there be one?  This is confusing to me.

Edit - Another source of confusion for me is that I bought a raspberry pi device that was supposed to be complete but when I look over the arcade roms folder on the hard drive I see it is only about 8 gb.  These arcade games mostly did not work when I play through retroarch so that's what led me to downloading this 60gb version.   When I look at the zip file for each rom I see a list of smaller files but no CHD files.

There are not CHD's for games that dont need them, only for games that do. However there are a lot of CHD's in the pack for games that MAME can not currently emulate, but have been dumped and are ready for use when MAME is able to emulate those games in the future. The list you see above is all the games that also need a CHD file to run, but as i said a lot of those simply do not work in MAME as of yet (and that list is using data from MAME 0.201 and the current release is 0.206 so that list may of changed slightly since). CHD's go in the rom folder along side the normal game zips, or anywhere you like really as long as you tell MAME where they are located.

The vast majority of games in MAME do not need a CHD at all and will work just fine with the 60GB pack you downloaded. CHD's are essentially CD Disc images using the CHD format of compression (Compressed Hunks of Data=CHD) and are used on the more recent arcade systems MAME can emulate for the most part, like CPS3 games like Street Fighter 3 and it's sequels, and there are also some older games that need CHD's also like the Killer Instinct games.

The pi uses a specific subset of roms and from a very old set, i believe the roms are from around 2003. The pi uses a very old reduced romset and a very old version of MAME to run them. The pi simply is not powerful enough to run current rom dumps with the current version of MAME, hence why a very old subset of the games is used on PI.

EDIT:

The reason those pi MAME roms didnt work is as i said, they are from a 2003 set and will need a MAME emulator version from 2003 in order to work for the most part. This is why MAME sets are numbered, you for most of the time want the same version romset and emulator. Running the pi set which is around version 0.076 with the current version of MAME which is 0.206 will not work for most games.

LOL I just accidentally reported the above post.  It's early and I thought I was clicking reply.  Yikes.  Sorry.

Edit - To anyone wondering how this is possible.  I'm a new father and haven't had much sleep lately.

I downloaded the 208 non-merged mame set.  Games will not play, I now understand that I need the chd files, can anyone tell me which one?  The only available chd for 207 looks to be the merged set.

Also, if only some need chd, should some of my mame downloaded roms work??

Thanks in advance.

The chd's are a separate file and not all mame machines (roms) need them.  chd's will have the exact same name as the rom.  Most (if not all) chd's you may see "listed" as 0.207 will work for 0.208.

Yes, some (most) of your roms should work.  A nice easy check is something listed near the top like 1942.  No chd file is required.

(Also, may want to mind your pictured personal sticky notes ;) )
