  1. I'm probably completely alone on this one, but I've really gotten into the Dark Ambient genre within the last couple years. This is the kind of thing that obviously doesn't have very broad appeal but what I really enjoy about it is the sonic storytelling at work. This kind of stuff, when it's at its best, can really transport you somewhere else. Put on some good headphones, close your eyes, and just let your imagination take over.
  2. @Thordelan Perturbator and Carpenter Brut are some of the "heavier" bands in the genre - sometimes referred to as "Darkwave". For similar stuff I'd recommend Dan Terminus and Gost: For a metal/dubstep hybrid, have you ever listened to any Celldweller?
  3. Thanks I love me some good Synthwave.
  4. @Jason Carr okay cool. I'll leave it alone for the time being then. I just wanted to make sure I had a good grasp on how to prepare/package them. As far as the platform names, yeah I totally understand what you're saying. Honestly though any amount of underlying logic for name adjustment/matching would be better than what I have now which is "If your platforms are named exactly like X, Y, and Z, this download will be easier/faster to install; if not, here's a big folder with everything in it..."
  5. I like that one! I've always really liked La Rocha's style. Different connection (Tom Morello) but have you heard Street Sweeper Social Club? They're hit and miss but I like Morello's guitar work.
  6. For me it was Korn, Disturbed, TOOL, A Perfect Circle, System of a Down, Deftones, Static X... a lot of "Nu Metal". RAGE!!!
  7. My high school soundtrack consisted almost entirely of Korn.
  8. DP and Marley Marl. I actually really like the Gramatik track though.
  9. Ehhhhh... yeah definitely not my thing To each their own!
  10. @DOS76 never been a big Hip-Hop guy myself though I occasionally take dips (I enjoyed that Aesop Rock song more than I expected, actually). I'm not sure if you'd like this but I really dig it. The New Law is this weird post-apocalyptic wild west themed trip-hop band... Most of their songs are instrumental in full disclosure.
  11. Cool. Yeah I'm familiar with Zero 7 and Bonobo. Here are a few of my own compositions that you might dig. My stuff tends to be...a little all over the place in style but these are some that are in the same kinda vein: A lot of my stuff is instrumental but I did some vocals for this one:
  12. Nice @alexis524! I like it! Have you ever listened to The American Dollar? You might like their stuff.
  13. So how does this work exactly? Is this something I can use to package the various types of custom images I've uploaded here? One concern I've had is with platform naming - not everybody uses the same platform names (like NeoGeo vs Neo Geo vs SNK Neo Geo etc.) so is this something that themes can detect and compensate for? Thanks as always!
  14. @lordmonkus yeah absolutely. I could see people saying that Synthwave is all the same, and there are some bands out there that certainly are just super-derivative, but if I hear a track by Carpenter Brut, for example, I know that it's a Carpenter Brut song as soon as I hear it, even if I've never heard the song before. There's just a distinctive style/sound to it. And like you said, if it's something that you find yourself with a lot of affinity for (and familiarity with) in general, the nuances are going to be more pronounced to you than most. For the record, I think Carpenter Brut would be a great Synthwave "gateway band" for metal-heads out there - there's a certain metal sensibility to a lot of it (as retarded as that may sound), even if the instrumentation is obviously completely different. If you like horror movies from the 80's, even better
  15. To some degree yeah, but the reason I mention it specifically here is that it seems more pronounced than in other genres; to me anyway. Similarity is one thing, but to me albums like Dopethrone are effectively one big muddy, sludgey, fuzzy jumble where one track has little perceptible difference with those surrounding it. I certainly couldn't name a single track title if someone played say 10-second clips of them. I could with the vast majority of other music I listen to. I get that that's kinda "the point", I'm just saying that's why I can only listen to it for brief periods.
  16. Fair enough. I can listen to that kind of stuff in limited doses - I think a lot of it can end up being a bit samey and overlong though. I thought Electric Wizard were awesome when I first found them but I feel like most of their songs are fairly indistinguishable from one another haha. Detuned Fuzz: The Musical
  17. Great! If you ever do decide that you want to add art for anything after the fact, the images just need to be placed in whatever folder you want for the appropriate image type (like "Boxes - Front") and match either the game title or rom file name. You can, of course, also add them manually to a game entry by editing the entry, right-clicking in the image section to the bottom right and selecting "add", browsing to whatever image you want, and then choosing whatever image type you want to categorize it as.
  18. So much angst! Doesn't anybody around here listen to anything that doesn't make you want to punch something/someone?
  19. Don't get me wrong, we greatly appreciate those sort of contributions! Jason's got a massive workload so external legwork like this is awesome! It's just that ScummVM specifically is a bit of an odd duck haha There is no real importing of ScummVM per se; not in the same sense as other platforms. You basically have to build the entries from scratch in your library. I've got a list of instructions here. The actually scraping is the simplest part of the entire process. The metadata will be scraped from either DOS or Windows depending on the game (most are DOS). It's just everything else that's a bit on the unwieldy side
  20. Welp, there it is then. If you were to import any rom files in association with any emulator other than MAME itself (even a MAME core of Retroarch) it doesn't automatically apply that option and you should see the box.
  21. Actually... what emulator are you using for these? Are you using MAME proper or a Retroarch core? If you're actually using MAME as the emulator I believe it just uses that function automatically. I have it defaulted to Retroarch so it doesn't for me.
  22. I'm not sure what to tell you there. It's not a premium feature as far as I know. I guess as long as it's taking you to the MAME import screen that's the important part...
  23. I'm a little confused as to what that would be used for, as far as ScummVM importing. Scraping metadata in and of itself has never been the issue with ScummVM importing - it's that you don't have a traditional rom "file" like other emulator+rom combos; you're directing it to a folder that contains the relevant data files. The way you do that is via the drop-down menu in the ScummVM tab of the game entry:
  24. By the way, the option I was talking about earlier is the last box on this screen in the import wizard (these are the default checks for this screen): If that box is left unchecked and you try to import Aero Fighters for example (aerofgt), this is what you'll get on the final screen (where it shows the title that it will import it as): If you do check it, you'll then be taken to a special import screen specifically for MAME: Leaving it with the default options (as pictured above), hitting next then gives you this as the final screen of the import (the actual game title):
