Yep, you can absolutely do this. The only caveat is that whatever emulator you're using needs to have Xinput support, and in some cases emulators require a bit of additional tweaking (beyond what's required simply to get it to work via LB/BB) in order for it to work properly via In-Home Streaming. Many emulators support Xinput natively (like Retroarch for example) and some can have it patched in. There are some older (but still valid) posts I made on the Steam forums about how to do this for various emulators here: Has anyone got project 64 working? Steam Link + Retroarch I use a Steam Link in my living room to stream from my primary PC upstairs. It's functionally identical to streaming from PC to PC via Steam In-Home Streaming. You just need to add Launchbox / Big Box as a non-steam application in Steam and launch it from there once you begin streaming. Let me know if you have any questions or if there's an emulator in particular that you're having issues with. EDIT: I mention in one of those posts that LB/BB have issues with recognizing controller inputs via In-Home Streaming, but that's actually been addressed since that post was made. LB/BB didn't have Xinput support at the time

Is there any chance of seeing the Steam video downloader implemented for non-Steam games that are also on Steam? I've got quite a few GoG and physical PC games that'd love to see it
-
Huzzah! I'm actually really glad to hear that. I'm proud that we've got such a knowledgeable and insightful bunch of folks 'round these parts. I used to frequent /r/emulation but all I ever see over there anymore is "Hey, here's the 9000th video of Cemu ^_^" so I don't bother anymore.

What do you want me to test for them? Unless something specific was implemented to accommodate importing them, I don't think anything would have changed in that regard because they're...atypical. For Atari ST via the Steem emulator it has that weird command-line format of multiple disks listed in order which will load them into "drive A" and "drive B". So for D/Generation, for example, I had to create a Windows shortcut with a target path of: "X:\Emulation\Atari ST\Steem TOS 1.62\Steem SSE 3.7.0.exe" "X:\Emulation\Atari ST\Roms\D-Generation (1991)(Mindscape)(Disk 1 of 2)[cr Elite].st" "X:\Emulation\Atari ST\Roms\D-Generation (1991)(Mindscape)(Disk 2 of 2)[cr Elite].st" I haven't been able to successfully replicate this via any combination of command-line parameter fields in LB and have had to just create Windows shortcuts for multi-disk games and use the shortcut as my "rom" in LB. For Amiga, I don't know what (if) I could test - I know a lot of people use loaders, but I never have. I just use standalone WinUAE and use .uae config files as my "roms". Which works fine but requires some external setup in WinUAE for each game beforehand.

I've actually wondered about that myself haha. It's certainly is possible. I'm no expert on such things so I usually just shrug it off as serendipity

Awesome! Thank you! Interesting, I'll try to remember this. Thanks! I've kindof gotten in the habit of doing that so I'll have to break myself of it. Is this specifically in reference to non-MAME arcade games? I just wanted to make sure I was on the same page and that something else hadn't changed (like for say Atari ST, ScummVM, Amiga, etc.).

Well yes and no. Granted, it's not likely to be their first stop, but let's be clear - these are forums for a piece of software specifically designed to be used in conjunction with emulators. There have been multiple, separate occasions where I've googled various emulation-related issues/topics and the LB forums were among the first results (and LB was in no way part of the query). It's not exactly out of place here. I understand what you're saying though. In my defense, I can tell you that I actually have posted on their own forums and it was completely fruitless/unhelpful; probably in no small part because I don't think English is the native language of anyone on the team.

The way I look at it is that when people just go along gleefully with this sort of thing it sends the message to the developer that "Yes, this is the kind of progress your userbase wants. Keep doing what you're doing, don't worry about the fire burning over there. It's fine." What if 50% of the people who used LB/BB had a critical crashing problem that was persistent, repeatable, and unavoidable by their own means, and then Jason went dark for a year, and after that period he showed up and said "Hey guys! I'm really excited to let you know about a new feature I've implemented that allows you to transform all of your game music...into Kazoo tracks! Isn't that awesome?!" ...don't you think it'd be pretty reasonable at point to say "Uh...what?" Sorry to be a dark cloud

I agree that any positive change is a good one, but not all improvements are created equal either. There are still plenty of issues with Demul that have been issues since the beginning, some of which seem like they should be pretty pressing. After a year of silence, I would have expected something a bit more dramatic. There's nothing wrong with criticism. In fact, I would go as far as to say that blowing smoke, by contrast, is actively detrimental. The fact that it's an emulator I use, am interested in, and have actively followed for some time now (and regularly recommend, by the way) doesn't mean that I'm gonna gush over them after a year of waiting because "We improved some random kart racer". I'm not saying there's anything wrong with fixing said random kart racer, I'm saying that between fixing a random kart racer and addressing some of the major issues that affect literally every game, it's a bit of an odd choice. I don't pull punches, period. It doesn't help anybody. I don't say this stuff to be a hateful, vindictive prick - I do it because I care about it and want to see it improve.

Hmm... the changes don't sound too major... especially considering the span since the last update. How about "Improved audio to not be semi-crap"? That's been my number one complaint for some time now. It runs pretty fast/well in general if you have a decent machine and it's certainly more accurate than NullDC (though still imperfect, of course) but the sound, specifically, is a good deal worse than NullDC. The note about "ADPCM decoder tweaks" could have some impact on it but I kindof doubt it. It's pretty vague too...

Thanks! I do love me some System Shock

I haven't been having any issues with it @Jason Carr. In fairness though, I haven't had any issues with it for quite some time. I used WMP when the two were first implemented as it seemed to be a bit more consistent than VLC but more recently I haven't really noticed much of any difference between the two (which is a good thing, because WMP has always worked fine for me).

What's the problem you're having @DOS76? I have an X-Fi as well although it's an actual internal card. I went back a couple pages and couldn't figure out what post you were referencing. There's some kind of powersaving issue that's causing your X-Fi to freak out or something?

That too I've just gotten so used to doing it via Windows because a lot of times I'm dumping/moving images in bulk.

Right but that's what I'm saying. You don't have to use Big Picture at all just to launch a Steam game through Big Box. A normal Steam launch ID will run it through LB/BB just fine (and drop you back to LB/BB afterwards). I don't think there's anything you're going to be able to do about this short of maybe creating a batch to run Big Picture and then automatically launch Big Box in a single shortcut. Big Picture is definitely an attention hog. You'll basically always be dropped back into Big Picture once you're done playing whatever it is you've launched through it. This is why the Big Picture -> Big Box method works, because it sees you as "playing" Big Box. So as long as you're still doing/launching things through Big Box via that method, it'll drop you back to Big Box. If you launch something else from Big Picture, it's going to take you back to Big Picture once you're "done". I feel like there's a way to resize the notifications in Steam... Not sure if there's a way around the keyboard thing though.
-
Band aid how? What's the problem? If you want to use Big Picture in combination with Big Box, that's the order to do it. I'm not entirely sure why you would want to use Big Picture itself in combination with Big Box unless they were in that order anyway (and the only reason I do it is because of Steam Link streaming which requires Big Picture usage). If you're just wanting to play Steam games through LB/BB, Big Picture is in no way required (and relatively redundant, since it's basically a frontend itself). Is there some particular reason why you just have to have access to Big Picture for something? If not, I'd just remove it from the equation entirely.

Yeah I'd definitely like to see that implemented as well. If nothing else it'd speed up experimentation. There are some platforms that have a sortof defacto emulator but there are others where this isn't necessarily the case. In a perfect world the Mednafen team would work their magic on every platform and we wouldn't have to worry about that, but until then there will be some platforms where it's just a bunch of give and take between emulators and just deciding what things have to be sacrificed to accommodate other things and what's the closest to be okay among the multiple imperfect options. Anything to speed up the process of determining which option is least crappy is a benefit in my book This option would also allow people who have multiple emulator entries for RA (or something else) to swap between them even faster than they can now. I'd actually really like to see Mednafen take on DC and, if they got really adventurous, PS2.
-
Cool, I'll check it out! I've dabbled in a bit of it myself. This was a track I made for a Pathfinder (basically a D&D 3.5 variant) campaign some friends and I played on Roll20.
-
Another option is to create multiple emulator entries in LB for Retroarch, with different control configs, and then swapping between them as necessary. For example I have 3 FBA control profiles that I switch between because I like to have one specific button always be "fire" and one button always being "bomb" for every shmup, but not every game has the same button order so without some manual intervention they can get mixed up from game to game. With the multiple profiles I basically have Button A = Button 1 in game / Button B = Button 2 in game / Button C = Button 3 in game for profile 1; Button B = Button 1 in game / Button C = Button 2 in game / Button A = Button 3 in game; etc. I like doing it this way so that I can switch between them quickly from game to game without manually setting up button configs per game. I kinda touch on how to do this in a post (for a different issue) here: Basically you just create a new emulator entry, add in any alternate cores or config switches that you want, and then choose that as your emulator instead of whatever you normally use. Obviously how worthwhile this method is going to be will depend largely on how many games you're talking about. For me, I like being able to swap them on the fly like this without actually having to change anything in RA per game.

Go to your images -> platforms folder within your Launchbox directory and place it in the appropriate one (the appropriate platform) in a subfolder called "Fanart". If one isn't there, just create one.

I'm probably completely alone on this one, but I've really gotten into the Dark Ambient genre within the last couple years. This is the kind of thing that obviously doesn't have very broad appeal but what I really enjoy about it is the sonic storytelling at work. This kind of stuff, when it's at its best, can really transport you somewhere else. Put on some good headphones, close your eyes, and just let your imagination take over.
-
@Thordelan Perturbator and Carpenter Brut are some of the "heavier" bands in the genre - sometimes referred to as "Darkwave". For similar stuff I'd recommend Dan Terminus and Gost: For a metal/dubstep hybrid, have you ever listened to any Celldweller?
-
Thanks I love me some good Synthwave.
-
@Jason Carr okay cool. I'll leave it alone for the time being then. I just wanted to make sure I had a good grasp on how to prepare/package them. As far as the platform names, yeah I totally understand what you're saying. Honestly though any amount of underlying logic for name adjustment/matching would be better than what I have now which is "If your platforms are named exactly like X, Y, and Z, this download will be easier/faster to install; if not, here's a big folder with everything in it..."

I like that one! I've always really liked La Rocha's style. Different connection (Tom Morello) but have you heard Street Sweeper Social Club? They're hit and miss but I like Morello's guitar work.
