He definitely doesn't pull any punches, that's for sure. Just prepare yourself - he can be rather...shocking at times. The irreverence is what I appreciate though I'm not sure if you saw the edit about The Gaming Historian but you should check it out if you haven't already. He clearly puts a lot of time and effort into research and thoughtful analysis.

I'm a big fan of Hardcore Gaming 101 myself. Not a daily thing by any means but it usually has a lot of in-depth and useful information and, like you said, some good comparative info. Racket Boy is actually pretty similar in a lot of ways too. I like Rock, Paper, Shotgun quite a bit. It's a great resource if you're into PC gaming. They discuss a lot of obscure stuff as well, which I really appreciate. The "Have You Played..." section is a great place to start for that. Giant Bomb is the primary "mainstream" gaming site that I frequent. They have an awesome podcast too. Beyond that I watch a lot of Jim Sterling. The Jimquisition, in particular, is absolutely worth everyone's time. Pertinent, biting, hilarious, and spot-on pretty much every time. EDIT: Oh, and The Gaming Historian is a channel you should probably check out if you haven't already. Based on your post I'm pretty sure you'd like it. Really interesting and in-depth looks at any number of things in the retro gaming world.

****Will it [ ever ] Emulate XP Sp3 ???? *****
Zombeaver replied to TheAlien's topic in Troubleshooting
You'd probably need to look into setting up a virtual OS environment with something like VirtualBox. You can install/run older versions of Windows in DOSBox - I've got a couple games that use 3.1. I don't think DOSBox would be the appropriate route for anything passed say 95 though (and even that is a bit of a stretch). You'd be better off looking into a virtual environment solution. In the past this presented problems when it came to hardware accelerated games, but it's my understanding that that's something that's improved over time with some of these and that some degree of GPU access is now available in these environments. Admittedly, my experience with VirtualBox (and other equivalents) is somewhat limited, but it's an option. -
Obviously "obscure" is a somewhat loose term, but the general idea is just to raise awareness about games that most people might not know about. It doesn't have to be a PAL-only never-officially-released prototype, but it could be haha. To me it's just "This is a game that the average gamer probably doesn't know about, but it's worth their time because of X". I think hacks would qualify - they're still games like anything else; just so long as it doesn't become too much of a focus - there's no shortage of official releases that slipped under the radar Speaking of PAL-only, I actually own a copy of this: It's a super-weird super-hard rhythm game brought to us by the same minds that created Parappa The Rapper. You can insert your own music CD to change the levels. It basically reads the waveform of the song and creates a "track" for you which has different obstacles (shapes) to overcome that require different button presses (or combinations thereof). It's actually a bit difficult to explain so I'll just include this: It's really quirky and fun. It's definitely recommended if you enjoy rhythm games. The concept and technology in use here were actually pretty revolutionary. Keep in mind this game came out 9 years before Audiosurf. You can use your own "CDs" in an emulator if you create one as a bin+cue and swap over to it when prompted (you select the option to use your own CD in game).

Yep Here are a few pics. That's a bit out of date but you get the idea. I have an actual list of everything on VGCollect. Koudelka's definitely a goodie! I've been trying to get a hold of that one for a while. It usually goes for around $50. As you mentioned, it has noticeably good voice acting for the era. I also just appreciate it's unique atmosphere for the genre and the quirky mix of strategy, RPG, and survival horror. I'm a big Shadow Hearts guy too. Future Cop: L.A.P.D. Platform: PSX This is one that I think a lot of people might have overlooked because of the somewhat generic-sounding title and obvious ED-209 ripoff on the cover. Don't let that fool you though - this is actually a great shooter! You may be a "cop" but that doesn't stop you from blowing the living hell out of just about everything in sight with a wide array of weaponry. Your mech can either walk around (as pictured on the cover) or transform into a speedy robo-car mode. It's got really nice graphics and sound and it even has legitimately good multiplayer (both co-op and competitive). There's also a secondary play mode that's completely separate from the campaign that's basically a combination of strategy and point-defense - it's very unique!

LaunchBox and game Via steam for use with my steam controller
Zombeaver replied to cammelspit's topic in Noobs
Yeah I wish there was an answer for you. Believe me, I love fiddling with this stuff to get it to work - that's as much fun for me as actually playing the games themselves When I heard about the Steam Link I was really interested in it, but for the specific purpose of piping emulators from my main PC to elsewhere in the house. That's something that...obviously isn't officially supported in any way So before I picked one up, I spent literally about two weeks just testing stuff with Steam In-Home Streaming (which is functionally identical to a Link, just from one PC to another instead); just going from one emulator to the next. There's a whole other layer of complication and compatibility issues to overcome in order to get all of it to work but most of it actually does work with enough finagling. Unfortunately for the Steam Controller, however, based on everything I've read, the issue you're facing is a fundamental limitation of how their configuration software is designed. It's just not setup to detect sub-applications for the configuration purpose. Regarding Dolphin itself, I know that it supports per-game configuration files - I don't know if/how much that carries into control configuration though. Have you tried approaching it from that end? Based on this, it looks like you can setup control profiles per config. I've never used them for that purpose, but I've used plenty of other information in that post without issue.- 29 replies

LaunchBox and game Via steam for use with my steam controller
Zombeaver replied to cammelspit's topic in Noobs
Again, there's really nothing to "figure out" as far as LB/BB are concerned. The controller configs, as Valve has currently designed them, are created on a per-launched-application basis, not a sub-application-following-the-launched-application basis or active-application basis. It's for whatever you launch (this is why it's showing "Currently Playing Launchbox"). If you launch LB or BB, you're going to get a LB or BB config not one for whatever else is started as result of LB/BB. If you really want to use per-game steam controller configs, you'd need to use something like ICE. This basically creates a steam launcher for a rom+emulator. They're recognized by the Steam Controller for individual configuration (because it sees each game as the application itself).- 29 replies

LaunchBox and game Via steam for use with my steam controller
Zombeaver replied to cammelspit's topic in Noobs
It's a limitation of how the Steam Controller works, I know that much. It's based on the application that's launched - whatever you're using as your "non-steam application" is what it's creating the config for. It's not something that's the fault of LB/BB, it's just how the Steam Controller currently works. Your issue would actually be better directed to the Steam Controller forums themselves. Nothing in LB/BB is going to get around this limitation for you. He's talking about this: Not this: Two very different things- 29 replies

LaunchBox and game Via steam for use with my steam controller

I do use a Steam Link in combination with Big Box; however, I don't have a Steam Controller so I can't really help there. I use a wireless 360 controller in combination with the Steam Link. I can certainly help you get just about any emulator to work in combination with the Link (or just In-Home-Streaming in general), including Dolphin, but I can't help you with Steam Controller configuration/troubleshooting because I don't have one- 29 replies

Literally nothing is stopping you from doing that if it were to be removed. It can still be a platform (in your library) like anything at else. Again, this is like have a "Retroarch" platform. No, it seriously doesn't in any way. If you actually try adding ScummVM games you'll understand why haha. It has nothing to do with it whatsoever. You pick the game from a drop-down list in the scummvm tab in the game entry. The DB has no impact on that whatsoever.
-
What was the concern raised? As has been said, the games are either already part of something else (DOS/Windows) or they should be. Removing them from the DB shouldn't actually have any impact on importing itself at all. You'll still be picking your game from a list. And once you do you're still going to be scraping by everything with that name (which will presumably be something either DOS or Windows).

I actually got the idea to look into it because of Deep Fear. Deep Fear was never released in NA, but there was a prototype version that was discovered (and ripped) that was based on the PAL version. I noticed that it worked fine in Mednafen (despite the fact that Mednafen doesn't support PAL currently and that game was never officially released in NA, but the prototype is NA region coded). My guess is the issues with Discworld 1 and 2 will present themselves to a larger audience once PAL is added in. I doubt them adding in PAL support will suddenly fix it or that region patching the roms is actually the cause of the problem.
-
Yeah the program is pretty easy to use as well. You just direct it to your .bin and then uncheck the region that it is currently (which will be PAL for this purpose) and then check North America and save. It's been better than 50/50 for my testing.
-
Yeah the program is SRP 3.0 (Sega Saturn Region Patcher) I've converted over Discworld, Frankenstein: Through The Eyes Of The Monster, Jewels of the Oracle, Keio Flying Squadron 2, and Z. Discworld is the only one that hasn't worked for me and according to monkus Discworld 2 has issues as well.
-
@lordmonkusYep, and despite that I still went through the annoying-as-hell trouble of setting up everything to use SSF in LB. That definitely should say something... Also the full name is "Yet Another Buggy And Uncomplete Saturn Emulator". Not only is Buggy in the title, the title isn't even grammatically correct... "Uncomplete" isn't even a word! My ire is even greater now...
-
Haha sorry. I honestly just can't recommend Yabause under any circumstance. It's one of those things where it's like actually so bad that it's not even beneficial at all in my opinion. You're better off with literally no emulation than the broken mess that is Yabause. Isn't the "b" in the name literally for "buggy"? Haha
-
Yes, by a mile. Yabause is trash. Broken, buggy, wildly inaccurate crap. Mednafen blows it out of the water. There's specific names that have to be used for the bios files. They're on the Mednafen site, can't recall them from memory.
-
You don't actually need to do any of this. All I do is create a a config (.uae) file for each game and use that as the rom. You load up WinUAE, insert the disks into the swapper along with any other game specific settings you want, save it as a configuration and then drop that configuration as your "rom" in LB with WinUAE as your emulator. Works just fine.

I have a physical copy of it as well PSX is my favorite console of all time. I've got close to 300 titles in my physical collection. I've got plenty of recommendations there! It helps that there's plenty of great lesser known/weird titles for it.

What are the 5 games out of curiosity? I may have tested some of them. It's already leagues beyond SSF, in my opinion, even in its current state. Yabause doesn't even count as far as I'm concerned haha
-
I haven't tested 2, although I believe monkus said he did and that it was working.
-
I'm not sure if you got it sorted out yet @DOS76 , but Dragon Force for sure works. Try using CD-Mage or Isobuster to create a new bin/cue. I've tested close to 70 games and thus far only Astal and Virtual Fighter have serious problems - Astal has audio and sometimes crashing problems. Virtual Fighter hangs after starting a match. EDIT: The Astal problems are intermittent. I've played to the end of the first level and crashed on the first level, with no changes made to the rip.

So thoughts so far? Reviews haven't exactly been glowing... Jim Sterling's in particular was really negative. I will say that I'm one of the few crazy people that actually enjoyed deep-space exploration/surveying in Elite Dangerous (despite the fact that it's absolutely not a viable source of income at all). Learning how to prepare beforehand, stripping your ship down to the bare essentials, plotting a viable course (keeping in mind the types of stars that are usable for your fuel scoop and your maximum jump range), being so far from colonized space... it actually resulted in some of the more tense moments I've had while playing. I'm still kinda on the fence for NMS. I feel like I'm gonna end up waiting for a sale... EDIT: Never forget your KGB FOAM while exploring deep space.

I do like me some Wolverine ...except for those rare cases where he's covered with scorpions.
