Thanks very helpful.

From the sounds of it, can you confirm if you guys both have startup videos? If so, do you still get a crash if you remove them?

Based on the errors, it's saying that your computers are having a hard time with hardcore decoding the videos, and we are working on a fix.

I have a startup video. Removing it though doesn't seem to impact the issue as it still fails to open.

Seems even launching Launchbox causes it to close down also now, not just BigBox. Still seems Video related though, as it opens the main menu, some still art displays but I don't see any video previews playing and then the software just closes itself. Odd though because I think I was able to get at least Launchbox to open before. I might have changed the Video Playback though to Windows Media Player prior to Launchbox also having problems now. After the startup video in BigBox though, it would be playing Category videos, so it would still be attempting to play something and sounds video related.

Installing 13.23 Beta 2 corrects all the issues still.

Hope that helps!

Correct I have a startup video and it ran for like 3 seconds then crashed. I removed the video still wont load, basically same results.

13.23 crashing on 2 PCs as well.  Removed startup video and BigBox just sits at the BigBox logo splash screen and BigBox.exe is in taskmanager as a "background" task.

I had trouble getting Big Box to work! But it came back to 13.22 and I made a backup, otherwise it wouldn't start! I don't know where this is coming from, but this all seems pretty persistent.

It doesn't come at the right time either.

Good luck to the team!

Thanks guys for the reports.

For people having the issue with Big Box not starting for them and is available throughout the day, send me a PM and we can send you unofficial test builds to try and expedite the fix.

The issue is essentially due to a specific piece of hardware that you are running that appears to have a conflict when it tries to decode video/audio elements, however none of our many computers have that specific piece of hardware to test with. If nobody has time, we'll go the public beta test route and we'll be phasing out different fixes until it's not longer an issue.

For anyone wanting to be helpful, when it does crash, right click your Windows start button and click on Event View. Go into Windows Logs > Application. Find the errors reports about the crash. You'll usually find 2 Error reports and 1 Information report about it. You might as well dump them all here.

So, by coincidence I upgraded the video card in my arcade machine last night and the problem went away.  When I first tried 13.23 I had a 3080 card in the machine and BB crashed, so I reverted to 13.22.  Later that night I swapped the 3080 for a 4070 Ti Super.  This morning I tried 13.23 again to try and help troubleshoot but it just worked, even with intro video.  I'm using WMP for video, and was the last time as well, really the only thing I changed was the video card, and I re-installed the nVidia drivers after swapping the card.  I believe I was at the current version of those before as well.  I don't have the 3080 anymore so I can't easily swap it back to test, but it could be something about that generation of cards maybe?

Maybe look at the codecs if you use HEVC it often causes black screens! This is the only time I had a black screen with big box, it might be a clue! You never know

Windows 11
on the official 13.23 release FFMPEG is working much better! especially in Windows 11 since all video formats I have are playing in Windows 11. There are some issues though in Windows 11 regarding audio for webm format videos that also happen to occur in Windows 10. Seems I find a pattern with webm if they are having audio issues they are using Vorbis. It is not 100% throughout the entire video. Might be sounding crackly or like milliseconds of audio drop out for a few secs, then plays ok for 10 secs, then the next 4 secs sound bad. But it's always the same spots in every video. The issues do not move around, always consistent when played in LaunchBox or Big Box. webm files using Opus sound OK though. I can also take these files using Vorbis, re-encode in Handbrake changing only audio codec to Opus and now the audio plays OK in LaunchBox and Big Box.

I've encountered likely the same crash a couple other users have mentioned in LaunchBox. When a video is playing in LaunchBox in Windows 11 and I click on something else in LaunchBox, sometimes, it hard crashes. No error report window. Attempts to reproduce it are not consistent. This has not happened to me on Windows 10 though.

Windows 10
Windows 10 is much better too for FFMPEG. Really good job on fixing the previous problems so quickly. But I do notice webm format videos are problematic. And only some webm videos. I start to notice a pattern between ones that do or do not play at all due to mostly older videos, games released in 2020 or prior do play, while newer ones do not. I started looking at video's properties and there is a pattern where every single webm video that does not play in LaunchBox or Big Box in Windows 10 is using V9 video codec. I can take these webm files using V9 codec, re-encode them using Handbrake using V8 codec, and changing nothing else, and now they play in LaunchBox and Big Box on Windows 10. Going in opposite direction, I can take a working webm file using V8 codec, re-encode using V9, and now it doesn't work in LaunchBox or Big Box. Opus audio codec seems to work better too. Vorbis will still work in the sense the file will play in LaunchBox and Big Box, but there is usually some audio issue going on like I mentioned above. So, I found the best recipe for settings was to use V8 and Opus passthrough if file was already using Opus, or changing it to Opus if it was using Vorbis. AV1 codec works too. The only webm video codec I can encode through Handbrake and the file will not play in LaunchBox or Big Box in Windows 10 is V9. For webm videos that play in LaunchBox and Big Box in Windows 10 since they are using V8, but are using Vorbis for audio, if I re-encode them changing just Vorbis to Opus, audio now sounds OK.

To clarify all these webm format videos play fine in Windows 10 and 11 through any media player. It's just in LaunchBox and Big Box the problems exist.

Windows 10 & 11
In LaunchBox and Big Box, using FFMPEG, viewing any video fullscreen regardless of its format, the frame rate looks worse when viewing it normally. Sort of like the video is dropping frames or something.

Upgraded to 13.23 again and ran BigBox again. Added the 2 Error Reports, I did not find an Information Report though.

I've just updated to 13.23 and turned on FFMPEG, and after clicking a few games/videos LB always crashes fairly quickly. doesn't happen with WMP fallback. Also not sure if it matters but i'm using Parsec (Similar to team viewer) to connect to the computer with LB on it if for some reason they're conflicting, but that's never happened with any program/game in the past. I'm sure you might already know about the issue but just incase i've attached my log file.

Please, add the option to keep VLC like media reproductor. More options=More happy people=Less Problems.

Thanks!.

Unfortunately VLC caused major freezing issues due to the .NET wrapper. We spent months looking into fixing it, to no avail. The wrapper itself hasn't been updated for many years and seems abandoned, which forced our hand and required us to find alternate solutions.
