After a few years off getting back into Retro Gaming
SentaiBrad replied to wolfhound89's topic in Noobs
RetroArch is actually one of the better emulators available. Everything is actually laid out in a very well manner. I get that it's daunting, but it honestly offers one of the best emulator packages available. I can also map to my PS3, PS4, Xbox One, Generic N64 and 360 controller right now. If your controller doesn't have an auto-config profile then you may need to make sure to select the controller and set the buttons. In the case of the most popular controllers, like 360, Xbox One, PS3 and PS4 controllers, they just map automatically. My Generic N64 and GameCube controller are really bad controllers too, but they still map. I just need to make sure to select the generic what ever label in the Player 1 Binds. -

I have my entire collection on an 8TB HDD. I did some compression for some of my systems (never in Archives), and I have less than 500GB free. -

$20 is for a year, with the chance to continue or upgrade to a lifetime, or lifetime from the start for $50. EmuMovies is just a bonus if you'd like music, manuals and video more easily. You need Premium for video, but if you already have all of this you can do it yourself. Purchasing EM Premium to get video automatically in LB just makes things easier. As for emulators, you can use pretty much anything. We have a ton of tutorials that I used to make and now ETA Prime does. There are emulators which are better than others, but you have the choice to use what ever you want. Origin and UPlay games you'll need to import a bit differently, but Steam games are routed through the Steam Importer. A ton of questions have also been answered before, so a few searches for a few other questions you might have will go a long way. Otherwise, the community is here to help, welcome. -
LaunchBox doesn't give an error because it's not necessarily an error. It's always possible that a game just doesn't exist yet on the Database. You can click on a platform on the left, then go to Tools -> Audit, and sort it by LaunchBox Games Database ID's. Anything without an ID isn't attached. It could still have images (which audit can tell you about), but they'd be from EmuMovies.

I don't remember is Jason implemented a log system yet. I want to say he hasn't. I'll forward this to him though, maybe he has another idea of what it could be.

Everything is, that's the big thing no one realizes. The only two Arcade systems not distributed with MAME sets is Taito Type X and Sega Model 3. Taito Type X are actually just PC games, and probably never will be distributed with MAME sets. Sega Model 3 is still, I believe, the only Arcade sub-set that doesn't run in MAME still. That's why people also get mad when I talk about us merging the Arcade platforms on the Database, until I tell them Scrape As solves that no matter what and that those random single system sets out there are usually broken and they're up-to-date and already included in a MAME and CHD set.

Well no, I more or less knew, but they were "software lists". I just couldn't remember if "lists" were still directly related. I go through a lot of information and questions in a day.
-
I'm not even 100% sure on "lists" sets, but I assume they're related to software lists. As for the playlists, I would just to be safe.
-
Yea, all you need is the CHD merged and a mame rom split or non-merged.
-
I think you should upgrade, but that's just me. A lot of things changed actually. In that time, quite a few games were added or changed and things generally made better. Key file related stuff also changed as well if I remember correctly. So, after .181 non-merged was introduced. Split saw quite a few new changes as well. There were several name changes. Split stopped working reliably for me, but for others it kept working. Non-merged is like merged, but has all the files of split, so it's the most compatible version, but the biggest. I generally just go for non-merged and chd, call it a day. For your library, I think re-importing would be best just in case. If you delete the library (make sure to keep note of favorites), and re-import while using the Uncheck All buttons to uncheck all of the media boxes, it should import much faster and all of the old media will reattach. You'll want to run an update on all the games afterwards if you have any newly added games as it wont download any media on import. Realistically, if you're content and you have no reason to upgrade, then you don't really have to. I like upgrading every time or every other time myself.

No need to convert. Grab a MAME rom set and a CHD rom set. Then use the scripts to separate the games from the mame sets. Edit: Should still work with MAME .185

multi-display configuration not displaying things correctly
SentaiBrad replied to ekdikeo's topic in Troubleshooting
Ah, ok, that explains that much better. Probably not theme related then. -
Did you set the demul plugin to GD and set it up properly?

As a side note, IOBit Driver Booster will help with needing to update drivers. Otherwise, I am kind of at a loss. I feel like it's super obvious too. If it's displaying the UI correctly in that window, then it's not even trying to draw to the rest of the screen. I mean the full list of things it could be: Beta update (could try going back to the most recent official), a bad graphics driver install, windows and monitor management are having issues with settings, or a theme could have been installed to force 4:3 for Big Box, so the 16:9 monitor is being effected (especially because you said the black is on the sides, which is common for 4:3 on a 16:9). -
Xinput eventually became the standard because that's what the 360 controller was using, and that caught on like wildfire for PC's, so now anything that can be called Xinput is automatically grabbed. When I use my PS4 controller and InputMapper, games think I am using a 360 pad. RetroArch auto configs for it too, and it calls ot (or did?) a 360 controller.

Yea, if you really want to spend the extra money and the time, have a project to do, it can be fun for a lot of people.
-
Ah, I see. If you must go with the original, then I would go for good quality or easy to fix up originals and an adapter that can translate them in to Xinput. I recall there being an adapter that handles multiple types of controllers. That's if you're ok spending a bit more. The 8bitdo controllers are pretty good from what I read, and they have various styles. They have NES and SNES styles, with the Famicom and S. Famicom variants. They can range from the basic 2 button, start and select, to 6 face buttons, shoulder buttons and even control sticks. They look and feel pretty great, and work well. It would cover you for quite a lot and make it feel much better, and save money. I would say, if you're not worried about the look and feel to go with a PS4 or Xbox One controller as they're both really damn good; but I already know the answer to that one.
-
I have a Retro USB N64 controller and it's complete garbage. To be fair, the 360 pad is also very bad too when we're talking D-Pad. For everything, I use my PS4 controller and it works great. The Xbox One controller is also much better than the 360. For N64 specifically, I would love the N64 Hori Pad, but it's crazy expensive. It's also common to see N64 controllers with the control stick replaced with a GameCube styled one, as the control stick on the N64 is very bad and wears out easily.

OH THANK GOD! That doesn't help for anything older, BUT OH THANK GOD.

Yea it might be a good idea to re-install dependencies if more than one program is doing it. I have no clue if that will fix things, but it's something to try. As for going to an older version of LaunchBox, open your LaunchBox/Updates folder, sort it by date, and the newest exe in there will be the latest beta you've downloaded. Go back as many as you want. The official releases will be in there too, but they're not marked, so it might be better to download the official release from the site again. Install that on top of your current install, and it will revert back.

multi-display configuration not displaying things correctly
SentaiBrad replied to ekdikeo's topic in Troubleshooting
Did you install a 4:3 theme for Display 1 by chance? The only thing I can think of, is something is messed up potentially because of the ratio difference. @Jason Carr will probably know better though. This is the first time this has happened that I know of. This only started happening after 2 beta's ago? If that's the case, then go to your LaunchBox/Updates folder. Sort them by date, and go back the amount of beta's you've installed. So if you installed 2, then go to the 3rd oldest and install that on top of your current install. Let me know if that fixes things. You may want to even try going back to the official release, but it might be easier to re-download that from the website. -
Cannot d/l box front image if it is the only image found
SentaiBrad replied to WTutwiler's topic in Troubleshooting
I would walk you through on how to fix it, but there's no telling how bad it could be. It would probably be best to cut it off now, and just do a new install. You can carry over your media if you want, just place it in the same location. This way, not everything needs to be downloaded again and imports will go faster. -
Yea, this is bizarre. So we know it's not drivers, and the only other thing that changed was updating to the Creators Update? The creators update is special too. It's like an OS refresh, and it requires you to actually go through some steps instead of regular updates. Are you on the latest beta by chance?
