I haven't tried this core in a few weeks but the last time I tried it out it wasn't worth using yet, doesn't hurt to test it though. On a related note to anyone wanting to try this out you should really do a separate install of Retroarch because you will need to enable the Vulkan driver in your video settings and doing this in your normal build that does not use Vulkan will cause problems. So what I did was install to a new folder called Retroarch Vulkan and then added that retroarch.exe as a new emulator and labelled it Retroarch Vulkan so it's its own emulator in your emulator list.

Not at all. Just add your emulator you wish to use making sure it all works outside of Launchbox first. Then in your Gameboy Advance platform select all the games using "control + a", right click and edit. This will bring up the bulk editor and change the emulator field to the new emulator you want to use.

Yeah once you can make some changes and save out settings and reload them it will be awesome. BGFX is a pretty new feature, I think it was 171 or 172 which brought in initial support but had no shaders at the time and then it was 175 that got any shaders at all but only had 1 or 2. Now we got several presets and on their documentation page they do plan on allowing tweaks and saved settings "Currently BGFX HLSL settings are not saved or loaded from any configuration files. This is expected to change in the future." from their docs page near the bottom. http://docs.mamedev.org/advanced/bgfx.html

Like I said, you can tweak settings within the Mame UI but for now there is no way to save those settings, all changes made will be lost once you exit the game. The shader files for now are the .json files which as far as I know are not editable but I am uncertain of that. If you would prefer for now to just use straight up HLSL here are the settings I used before switching over to BGFX.

Probably but with BGFX you don't have to worry about it, it's smart like HLSL where the one shader looks good in both scenarios.

Now keep in mind they will look different depending on the resolution of your display, higher than 1080 is better due to pixel density so they way they look on your monitor may not be the same as they look on my screen during actual game play. And yes a real CRT display is better but many people do not have them anymore nor do many people want to deal with them. Yeah it should be able to do the BGFX shaders, it was something that was added in I think in 172 or somewhere around there but wasn't really functional. The supprt was in it but no shaders were written at the time. Version 175 added a couple of shaders, I am not sure at all if 176 added more or not but I know 177 and 178 has more options of shader choices. If the UI of whatever version doesn't have direct controls for it you should still be able to do it through the mame.ini file.

If you have a newer Mame rom set such as 178 or 179 use a Mame 178 or 179, they added a new .key file to the Capcom CPS roms and the older CPS roms don't work in the newer versions of Mame. If you aren't up to date on Mame roms I would suggest Mame 177 and since you are used to using MameUI you can get an addon program for Mame called Arcade which is just an executable you drop into your Mame folder and it basically just gives you back the old MameUI interface. Get it from EmuCR. http://www.emucr.com/search/label/MAME?&max-results=12 From there I recommend ditching GLSL and using the new BGFX shaders which you can setup in Arcade. Here are a couple of screen grabs to what you need to do in the UI config. If you notice in the 2nd picture the highlighted BGFX screen chains it says crt-geom 3 times, that isn't a mistake or anything. This is for multi monitor games such as the triple screen games like Darius and Ninja Warriors. This is a feature where you can have different shader effects for each monitor for the game. If you don't want to use Arcade for a UI and just want to use the standard command line version of Mame which is what I use here is a full written tutorial I did for setting up BGFX. BGFX shaders are very nice, you have several to choose from and they have the benefits of HLSL where they will work on vertical and horizontal without separate configs and they look good out of the box unlike HLSL which requires some tweaking. BGFX shaders cannot be tweaked and saved to a config file yet but it is planned from what I have read. They can be tweaked while a game is running using the built in Mame interface but the settings will not be saved on exiting the game. If you want to look at the different shaders while in game press the "tilde" key ' and press the down arrow key on the keyboard about 12 times you will find the slider where you can go left and right with the arrow keys to look at shaders. The shader will stay while you are still playing that game but once you exit out it will reset, CRT-Geom is my favourite.

That is something I have tried to figure out how to use as well with no luck, more specifically the ahk script tab in the edit emulator window. Hopefully @Jason Carror @SentaiBradcan shed some light on this for us

How do you guys split up Arcade games?

Well the way im thinking wouldn't matter on what it is. Again as an example you could set up a custom platform like say RPG. Then you could go into each system like NES, Snes, Genesis, etc and for each RPG game you have and want to have show up in the custom RPG platform just edit each game. -

Well I am sure you have something in mind on how to handle it. But for me I like the idea that I presented earlier. Import a whole Mame set and then make custom platforms based on how the user wants them. Then right click and edit a game and much like the associated platforms tab for an emulator let you set platforms for the game to show up in besides the Arcade platform. This way there is no messing around with the custom filters window which is cumbersome. It also just seems like a more end user friendly way of doing it. No idea how difficult that would be to implement for you though. -

I may have to take a deeper look into the custom filters but whenever I have looked into in the past I found it really cumbersome and too much of a shotgun approach. I would much rather have more fine control on a game by game basis. -

@Jason CarrWhat would be really awesome would be to have the ability to import an entire arcade set such as a Mame set and obviously have all of them in the Arcade platform. From there create custom platforms such as Capcom, NeoGeo or even by genre like Fighting, Vertical Shooters, Horizontal Shooters, Beat Em Ups and so on. Then in the Arcade platform for each game set a "tag" so that game then shows up in the Arcade and the custom platform you set a tag for. So just as an example Final Fight can be in the Arcade, Capcom and Beat Em Up platforms but only one import of the rom. -
It will be a lot of manual work depending on how many games you are planning on importing in to your custom platform but I believe if you do it one game or system specific games eg: nes you can choose the platform to be your custom one, then tell it to scrape the NES and choose the emulator as long as you didn't set a default emulator for the custom platform. You will probably have to have a line in the associated platforms window for each emulator to have your custom platform.

You can import any game into your custom platform but you will be setting each games emulator manually.

Try deleting the snes9x core config file in your Retroarch\configs folder.

To me it's about breaking up the harshness of the scaled pixels with the scanlines and blurring effects simulating a good quality CRT. The original artists never intended the pixel art to look like it was made up of perfect squares. They took the scanlines and shadow masks of the TV into account when they did the art and those effects create colours and shades that weren't actually there.

Something weird is going on, can you post some screenshots ? One of your Snes roms folder, one of your emulator settings and one of the associated platforms tab in the edit emulator window.

A lot of people use shaders actually and on a modern display they go a long in making the image look closer to what they were intended to look like on a CRT. Just straight up scaling sprites to a 1080 or higher resolution can have a jarring effect. This is all personal preference though of course and not everyone likes effects.
