Bummed out, my Launchbox keeps crashing. "Not responding" QUIT or DEBUG
ckp replied to cleverest's topic in Troubleshooting
I would say to download and install a brand new LB and do not use any of your existing setup or files. Maybe try adding some roms without doing anything fancy. Then see if you get any crashes. I think it might be something inside your LB folder that is giving LB and .NET a problem. This would be a test. If it doesn't crash then you know something about your original LB setup and/or configuration is bugging LB out. -
make a copy of the good Bigbox settings xml file and replace the corrupt one every time you power back up from a power loss. i don't think you can prevent bad things from happening if you keep having power loss, unless you can make the Bigbox settings xml file read only so nothing can write to it, corrupting it.

I don't think the amount of cache files changing is much (it's mostly just a one time hit) and so it won't hurt the SSD at all. It's mostly going to be used to read the files and the is what SSD does best without shortening its life. The thing that may be "worse" for SSD is constant writes, although SSDs nowadays last quite some time even with constant writes. And you can't stop the OS itself from constant writes as it's always doing that.

I think I'll try this. I have one system with a little bit of this issue. I have tried moving the image cache but not the videos. I'll try moving both to see if it improves.

Looking forward to the next release...

You could also rename your files easily with "Bulk Rename Utility" -

You have to do this with Launchbox closed (not running). -
For a quick way to do this, I think you could just do a simple find/replace with plain old notepad or Notepad++. Open the Platforms.xml folder. Search for : <FolderPath>Videos\ Replace that with the new path to your videos, like this: <FolderPath>R:\Launchbox\Videos\

it's killing me....

update: i unchecked the setting in LB options 'enable gamepad/joystick input' now it works great with no issues. possibly it might have also worked if i just set LB to use one specific controller but i don't like how controllers work in LB, so just disabling them works for me and solved this issue.
-
update: it got quite a bit better after i disabled BB setting Mouse->'enable mouse' and Controller->'use all controllers' but it still has a minor stutter if you stop on a platform and let the video barely start to play and then try to change platform again but at least its much better than before

The trackpad on my new Logitech wireless keyboard/trackpad is almost unusable when launchbox.exe is running. The mouse pointer doesn't respond most of the time or moves funny. Brand new keyboard, brand new batteries. This is only a problem when running LB. I have zero issues with the trackpad when LB is not running. Maybe LB thinks it's a controller and is messing with it? Haven't started fiddling with LB controller settings yet... Win 10 Pro Creators (recently installed clean). LB 7.11. i5 2500k, 8GB RAM, SSD OS drive. 5TB internal sata 3 drive. Nvidia 1050 Ti. Two wired xbox 360 controllers. One Logitech wireless keyboard/trackpad.

Since upgrading to 7.11, I've noticed my platform wheel scrolling with my default BB theme stutters sometimes. And sometimes it even freezes up everything for about 30 seconds where I can't navigate, select, or anything. I didn't hit this problem when using 7.10 on this system. Win 10 Pro Creators (recently installed clean). LB 7.11. i5 2500k, 8GB RAM, SSD OS drive. 5TB internal sata 3 drive. Nvidia 1050 Ti. Two wired xbox 360 controllers. One Logitech wireless keyboard/trackpad. Edit: also all my images have been fully cached for a while, so it's not caused by any image caching I think.

Yeah, you should filter on Critical and Error in your event viewer inside Application and System. Look a the bad stuff. Maybe you have a failing hard drive or two or something else. -
Additional App - Xpadder & Steam Games launching & exiting on startup
ckp replied to natemac00's topic in Troubleshooting
if your DOA 5 has a process (exe) which will remain that you can launch from LB instead of the steam id when editing the game, browse to and select that process instead. for my DOA 5 I don't think there is a process that I can start directly for the game and still keep my settings. DOA5 works fine with xInput for me, so I don't need Xpadder for it. -

yeah it starts the first process and if that one closes, then so will Xpadder. -
Who has the largest collection currently standing in Launchbox?

You guys might want to check into the @DOS76 home "data center" storage setup. He adds internal and external usb multi drive cases to appear as a single drive letter and with redundancy in such a way that any drive can be read on any Windows computer without any RAID drivers (it's not RAID). This makes things very simple and still managed by Windows which also helps to keep simple (no RAID Linux stuff here). And best of all, the data is all local and not over the network (but can be shared with other devices if desired). The software he uses to manage all this is called DrivePool and costs only $29.95: https://stablebit.com/DrivePool/Features I've used many NAS systems myself, but when they go bad, they really go bad, and often leave you screwed if you don't have a backup somewhere else. -
Just adding my two cents... If I set/checkmark 'check for updates on startup' and 'automatically download updates in the background' and 'update to beta releases', I would expect LB to download an update that is available, but never install the update as long as it asked me yes/no. So, if I tell it "no" to install the update, it should never take the liberty to install unless I say yes. You can set Window to download and install automatically, or download and not install until you say so, or just notify that there is an update download available and you say when to d/l and install. I think this is the correct behavior. Yes, even Win 10 has this ability (can be set in group policy editor or registry in win 10 pro anyway). In any case for Launchbox, I simply have it set only with 'check for updates on startup'. That way I choose when to download and install any update. If I want to get a Beta, then I go and enable that checkbox only when I want the Beta, and then uncheck it again if I don't want Betas anymore. You can have it your way with this method. I don't have any interest at all in the download in background feature.

Default theme, but I don't think that matters because it only crashes with VLC used in LB. I have no issue using VLC in Bigbox. I'm sure I have some other posts and bitbucket tickets on this from a while back. It has done this since I started using LB a little over a year ago. I think @Zombeaver also has this issue. I decided to accept it and just use WMP for Launchbox and VLC for Bigbox..
-
I've had this exact issue in LB (never in BB) with every version if I set it to use VLC. If I switch to Media Player I have no such issue. VLC works fine for me in BB.
-
yeah, it's probably pretty minor of a thing for a lot of people. but anyway, it seems like Jason always has a keen eye on this stuff and continues to improve and optimize. overall i'm super pleased with LB/BB, and i feel it has been more than worth the money i paid for it.
-
you're not the only one who can see it. i see the micro stutters and crashing LB from scrolling the games list fast just like you do. but, at least on my beastly system, i can avoid the crashes by not scrolling super fast, and the stutters don't really get in my way enough to really bother me with anything i'm doing.
-
yeah it probably is nothing on stronger systems. may be something on slower systems, not sure. @neil9000 , the reason you may look at the launchbox process in task manager for cpu usage or ram usage is when you see oddities at regular intervals and try to correlate those oddities to the spikes. so, like if you see the actual LB program stuttering every few seconds (even ever so slightly) or see your games FPS go down only when launched by LB, you start to look at these things for an explanation
-
yeah that video does exhibit the 5 or 6 second "spike" or activity interval. you may have 8 cores, so it's really .08 x 8.
