13.3 Beta Thread

Hi everyone,

LaunchBox 13.3 beta 1 is out with a few big features we'll need heavily tested. The first is our update to .NET 6. We've also included .NET in the application itself now, so the best way to test this would be to not have .NET 6 installed on your computer and see if LaunchBox installs and runs for you. The second, is our new sync statistics feature. Once you opt in, LaunchBox will sync your statistics (that are listed below in the changelog) and you'll have the ability to sync these statistics to future builds (or other builds you may have), as long as you have the same games there with the same versions. Any change you make to these stats will be sync'd up and be available across your builds. A new syncing status icon in LaunchBox is included in the default theme, however, custom themes will need to be updated in order to utilize it.

Beta 1 Changelog:

  • New Feature: LaunchBox will now optionally sync your game statistics to the cloud and sync them between your installations using your LaunchBox Games Database account. If enabled, your Favorites, Completed, Last Played, Play Time, Play Count, and Star Rating fields will be synced. You can enable this under Tools > Cloud > Enable Game Statistics Syncing after connecting to the LaunchBox Games Database (also in the Cloud menu).
  • Improvement: LaunchBox has now been upgraded to .NET 6.0 (from .NET Core 3.1), and no longer requires a separate .NET framework install in order to function
  • Improvement: Scanning for Nintendo DS achievements should now yield better results
  • Improvement: The ROM import wizard now does a better job parsing folders that contain a game with multiple BIN track files
  • Improvement: A new visibility binding (ModelVisibility) for 3D Models has been added to the MainView in LaunchBox (for theme developers)
  • Improvement: The visibility binding AchievementScoreVisibility for the Retro Score element has been adjusted to now collapse if turned off or unable to display in LaunchBox (for theme developers)
  • Fixed: Star ratings in the Game Details pane were not always being submitted to the cloud
  • Fixed: The Retro Achievements window was unable to fetch information due to changes with the RetroAchievements.org API
  • Fixed: The Audit window was improperly sorting the Box - Spine column
  • Fixed: The Games tab in the Playlist window was refreshing when attempting to click on a game in the grid, if your list was populated via the Auto-Populate Playlist feature

 

Beta 2:

  • New Feature: 3D model overrides can now be set on a game-specific basis using the Add/Edit Game window
  • Improvement: Import processes have been significantly improved for Nintendo Wii U and Sony Playstation 3 platforms, which should now properly identify the game's name when importing
  • Improvement: The included hashing application from RetroAchievements.org has been upgraded to better identify Retro Achievements for games that use CHD files
  • Improvement: The update notification popup that used to come up on startup (when background updates are disabled) has been changed to a notification instead, primarily to prevent Window focus issues on startup
  • Fixed: In rare cases, the games view inside of LaunchBox was not refreshing properly if the selected sidebar item wasn't visible in the list
  • Fixed: Some sync processes would throw errors if not connected to the internet
  • Fixed: The MAME Full Set Wizard didn't recognize a sucessful login to the cloud account if launched from the wizard
  • Fixed: Issues with play time not displaying properly after a sync if the game contained multiple versions

 

Beta 3:

  • Improvement - Scanning for achievements now works with M3U files
  • Improvement - Added 3D Model settings to Bulk Edit
  • Fixed - RetroAchievements errors that sometimes appeared when editing a game

 

Beta 4:

  • New Feature: LaunchBox plugins now have the ability to add nested menu items in a game context menu (for plugin devs)

Neat update! I struggled with .NET 6.0 installing properly on an emulation system I have set up separate--It seemed to hang. I fixed it by installing the framework manually, but no other issues to report as of yet.

When adding the .dll dependencies for plugin, the only one that works is Unbroken.LaunchBox.Plugins.dll, the other Unbroken ones:
The reference is invalid or unsupported

Below fixed by deleting the Settings.xml
Also, after install. (installing a fresh/clean copy of 13.3-beta-1 to another folder, no issue with icons, buttons)

I can confirm nintendo ds retroachievements now get detected perfectly.

Can you explain more of the sync functionality? How do we know how much time it needs to sync? for me it is always grey looking. And is there a page where we can see the stats like in the database?

Basically when enabled, any time one of the fields we are syncing get updated in your build you send the data to our cloud. Then when another install is syncing it grabs that data and applies the changes locally. For example if you have a PC build and a Arcade build. You play Aero Fighters 5 times for a total of an hour of gameplay. Those stats get sent to our server and then when you start up your PC build the play time and play count is set to the new value and will show in the UI.

There is a visual element added to the Default theme that shows the cloud sync status. This will get added to other themes once the version is closer to release. Overall a sync shouldn't take any noticeable amount of time for most users. The initial sync (the first time doing it) may take a second but overall you shouldn't notice it and it shouldn't slow down your app at all.

Outside of viewing the game in the LaunchBox app there is no other UI at the moment for looking at your sync data.

This means that the COULDNTFILEHASH  in xml file does not appear anymore?

No that line is related to the RetroAchievements leaderboards found in LaunchBox and Big Box that you see when viewing your achievement profile.

Thanks for the DS RA fix. 

Hashing problems for CHDs has been fixed pending merge (https://github.com/RetroAchievements/RALibretro/pull/370), so hopefully we can get a new RAHasher release soon to include before 13.3 goes final 🤞 

Are you expecting any big incompatibilities for plugins/libraries with the .NET 3.1 to .NET 6 changeover, or should most continue to work as expected?

I reached out to @JoeViking245 to ask if he saw any issues with the migrations in his plugins and he didn't have any with his plugins. Not saying that means we won't with ANY but as of right now I believe plugins should transition fine, they just won't have any benefit add in the move since they are using old frameworks. A user would also have to make sure the 3.1 runtime was installed to use the plugin and that runtime will no longer be distributed and installed with LaunchBox installation so as we move forward more and more users would have to take extra steps to use any plugin still on .NET Core 3.1

In the Beta 1 Changelog posted above it mentions that a new visibility binding (ModelVisibility) for 3D Models has been added to the MainView in LaunchBox (for theme developers).

What exactly is that and what does it do?

I don't see .net6 listed in the installed programs list and viewing the registry editor location

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\NET Framework Setup\NDP

Does not list v6 whereas v2,3,3.5,4, and 4.5 are listed.

EDIT: To add to this report: I guess this error technically popped up when trying to launch Firefox. After Firefox launched I then tried to load a IGN website

and the tab kept crashing as long as LB was running and each time the tab crashed I would get the LB error window. Trying to click on LB would generate another crash window. I had to right-click the taskbar icon to close LB.

The binding is in Game Details and allows the theme to respect the setting to use or not use 3D models in the Game Details view. Faeran requested it be added so he can make Big Details respect your settings and hide the model if you've disabled it via Options

Does not list v6 whereas v2,3,3.5,4, and 4.5 are listed.

The app doesn't "install" the runtime. It's just placed in the core folder with the rest of the dependencies and is loaded from disk to make the program function.
