DB Continuous Development Thread v1 ("Beta" Thread)

Not gonna lie, I'm a little sad that the number of changes/moderations I've done is gone. It was kind of a point of pride. But whatever, I'm glad mod speed is a lot faster now! -
I'm going to be the wet blanket here, and say that I don't think this belongs in a database of game information. Plus, I'm not interested at all in having to test every save file for malware, so the moderation process would have to be completely separate. I'm not sure how many people you can convince to risk their systems over and over again just to make sure that a save file is correct. Sorry, I'm against it.

Alright, they're all submitted; that includes the 20+ New Game entries I had to put together. Let me know when the next compilation happens, and I'll take care of it. -

Yeah, and it doesn't help that a fair few of these don't have DB entries, so I'll have to get those sorted out. Ah well, it's my own fault for enjoying doing this -

Alright, I guess I'll go be the Big Damn Hero and upload these to the DB... -
I'm currently playing Yakuza 3 for the PS3. I tried the first one on a whim a few months ago, and I've been completely and utterly hooked ever since. It's a Sandbox/Crime Drama/RPG/Beat 'em up/Japan Simulator, and I'm looking forward to seeing what else the series has in store.

Alright, let's get it started: SO I was submitting Alternate names today, and going through the Changes Status pages, it looks like some games had names submitted that I had added to different games. I've attached a screenshot because I'm not sure how to describe it. There are quite a few errors like this in my pending changes. -
More than the unit itself, I'm really intrigued by the controllers. I love that Nintendo are releasing (from what the reviews are saying) 99% identical replicas of the controllers I grew up with. Throw a classic controller to USB adapter on it, and you've suddenly got an amazing 8-bit emulation controller for your PC! I'm as happy about this as I was when Nintendo started making new GameCube controllers for Smash for WiiU, and then gave us a USB adapter to go along with it.

Cool. Time to get to work *cracks knuckles*

Okay, so what if a game had an alternate title that spanned multiple territories? Super C for NES was called Probotector II: Return of the Evil Forces in Europe and also Australia. Do I submit Probotector II: Return of the Evil Forces twice, once for Europe and once for Australia?

So what do we count as the "primary" name? Since I assume that's the name the game will be sorted by...

I'm okay with either of them. Considering that most games don't have Video URLs, as long as the video is related to the game, it's good to have available. The only time I've even see anyone replacing a Video URL is when the original link is broken.

I'd think that you could make the Maximum Players be the largest amount of players an online match would support, in that case. MMOs, on the other hand, don't make sense to list a number for.

Ha, love Takeshi's Castle. If you like Outrage, he made a sequel called Beyond Outrage. It's pretty good, but I prefer the first one. I'll have to check out his Zatoichi for sure.

Ugh. This means we'll have to do a LOT of new entries, since except for a few big games, most WiiWare isn't in the DB yet. I think this and DOS games are the most glaringly incomplete sections right now. Is there a link to download the complete pack from yet?
-
The last movie I watched was Outrage (available on Netflix in the US); it's a yakuza thriller starring and directed by Beat Takeshi (of the infamously bad Takeshi's Challenge Famicom game) and it is INTENSE. No punches pulled when it needs to be violent, and a lot of very nuanced tension in even the quietest scenes. I highly recommend it!

I don't think we should be rejecting any games based on whether they're still playable or not; that sets a bad precedent. I mean, by that logic we shouldn't list any of the Satellaview games for SNES, since they were certainly never meant to be played any time after the broadcasts. I personally think that PlayStation Home was, at least in Sony's mind, an integral part of the PS3 experience for many years, and that if nothing else makes it approved in my eyes.

Yeah, shaders are actually why I stopped using BizHawk; there's something almost magical about seeing a Game Boy game playing on a pixel perfect replica of an actual Game Boy screen, or playing Atari 2600 on a simulation of the crappy TV you had at your grandmother's house...
-
I used it for a good while actually, before I finally switched to RetroArch. BizHawk is a pretty great emulator, and yeah it totally works with LaunchBox. It's nice if you prefer the traditional emulator interface as opposed to RetroArch's XMB. Just bear in mind it's a little particular about which BIOS you need for certain systems.
