10.15-beta-1 Released

I've brought up the idea there may be a memory leak a number of revisions ago but at the time I was assured it was probably just my system.

Even with 16GB of ram LB eventually consumes it all requiring the application to be restarted, this has been the case across two different sets of hardware so far.

My solution was to just reboot the machine every few days in the middle of the night.

If it's happening for a whole bunch of people then it could be a memory leak or some other issue, if it's only happening for a very small number of people it is unlikely to be an issue with the software but there may be some weird combination of your hardware and the software which could be difficult to diagnose.

While I am not using the current beta so I can't say anything about any possible memory leak right now I can say that I have never had a memory leak issue with Launchbox in the past and I have it running 24/7 on my system.

Like @DOS76 said, that much ram usage is highly unusual and may just be an issue with the current build. It certainly is not normal, I just checked my ram usage on the latest stable build and it's sitting on 800 megs of usage and it's been running for a few days now since I rebooted my PC last.

10.15 is still the latest version, as we're working on a big feature before the first 10.16 beta. RAM usage should not be that high, no, but unfortunately it could be caused by any number of things, including faulty drivers, a Windows bug, or who knows what else. If you're seeing RAM usage upwards of 8 gigs (that keeps growing), please let me know what you're doing in LaunchBox that is causing the RAM to grow. I've done some testing on my systems though and I'm not seeing any issues like that, so it's probably somehow system-specific.

Okay, so I'm having some trouble in various ways with the Retro-Bit Gaming Official SEGA Saturn Bluetooth Controllers. At first they won't connect after you paired them and went to sleep mode, but they finally made a Firmware update that keeps them connected even when you have it sleep or turn them off by holding the Home button which makes any other controller stuck being anything but Controller 1 with it saying "Connected" instead of "Paired".

The issue where is comes down to LaunchBox & BigBox is that for some reason the Pause Screen comes up if you use the Select button, but never when you use the Home button. The Home button doesn't do anything except turn on and off the controller and even used to pair it. So I don't know if @Jason Carr could maybe find a way to make the Home button on it act as the Pause Screen in the same ways a XBOX or PlayStation can on their Home/Guide button or not.

Retro-Bit claims they aren't aware of these issues, but will have their team look into it, so I don't know if they will ever do another Firmware update or not, but I know they take forever to respond or get something working right.

Do you mean that you can't bind the home button? To be honest, we probably won't be adding support for proprietary buttons on third-party controllers that should just be adopting already-existing functionality instead of reinventing the wheel.

On LaunchBox, when I click on Options, the app freezes and the context menu stays up even if I alt+tab on my screen for 20 ~ 30 seconds, then the option window pops up.

8700K. LaunchBox is installed on an SSD.

Are you able to reproduce this every time? Have you tried rebooting? In the past, performance issues like this have typically been caused by some other app on your system creating a conflict.

I've had virtual memory crashes before. LB could possibly eat all virtual memory, too. Or something else. But seen that it took over of 8 GB of RAM, then it is a good candidate to blame.

I can see that every scroll and click in LB eats more and more RAM. And it stays like that.

Now it froze.

Something is definitely wrong with your system. My launchbox is currently using 1.4GB ram and is in the middle of importing the N64 software list so there's no way on earth your system should be consuming that much ram.

Hi! I have the exact same issue as @ZeSystem. It happens to me every single time.

How many platforms/games do you guys have in LaunchBox?

Currently, I have about 18,000 games in the library. But it's packed with a lot of images and different media, long notes, custom tags etc.

RAM starts at 1,4 and then goes up each time I click on a game when it loads the background and details panel with all that stuff inside.

When I stop clicking, RAM often stays. It won't go down or up (usually).

By chance, are you using Windows Media Player for your video playback engine in LaunchBox?

image.thumb.png.9c84342d0e8fa3ed15bac44e7720a74f.pngOther than that, I really have no idea why your system would be holding onto all that RAM. I've tested going through and clicking through game after and game and the RAM never goes above 2 gigs. So to figure that out, we'd have to dive in and test a bunch of things. The first thing would be to get your OS and system specs.

Can you explain exactly what is happening every single time (I assume you're saying that the Options screen is taking a long time to load)? Are you timing it? How long is it taking? Does it take a long time again if you close it out and re-open it? Are you seeing poor performance elsewhere in LaunchBox?

Try closing everything you have running in the background, especially any anti-virus or security apps, and see if that makes any difference.

@Jason Carr
I was able to track my quick crashing which left me without a mouse arrow to a RAM issue. Specifically, I was overclocking it too hard. Once I set it back to manufactures default speeds, I have had no crashing issues with BigBox. Sorry for the run around; hopefully it can help with future people with similar issues.

Thank you @ItchyRobot, good to hear.

For anyone in this thread who's having issues with performance, RAM, or crashes, keep in mind that issues like those are almost always caused by some kind of outside influence, be it bad drivers, being out of date on updates (or even running untested bleeding edge Windows updates), or some kind of poorly written application running in the background. And of course if your system isn't stable because of over-clocking, that can be an issue as well. Unfortunately we've also seen lots of corrupt Windows, .NET Framework, or DirectX installs that can do all kinds of other crazy things and cause similar issues. So it's always worth repairing Windows, looking for driver updates, making sure you're up to date on Windows updates, closing background applications, etc.

So this is random but not worth starting a thread for: what’s the parameters for the ‘multiple discs’ badge to show up in LB?

For example, FF 8-10 on PS1 have the badge but MGS 1 (which comes on two discs) doesn’t. Do I need to tick anything for it to show?

It was taking around 25 seconds. I followed your advise and de-activated the anti-virus. Now it pops-up immediately. Thanks!

Wow, good to know. What anti-virus program were you using? Just so we can look out for it in the future. :)

The multiple discs badge will show up if you have more than one additional app on the game with the Disc property set.

I'm using Trend Micro Internet Security 2020.

I see, thanks.

So for games with 2 discs only (one being the main game and the other set up as an additional app) it is not supposed to show?

no because when it make an additional app (at least in my experience) it always make two one for the additional app and a duplicate of the facing rom. Now if you remove the facing ROM from the additional app I don't know if that may effect it or not.
